Contained herein is a close examination of self-awareness and self-portraiture as it applies to the works of artist Jeffrey Hoffman. Water, frozen into various forms and combined with natural elements of wood, slowly melt over an indeterminable amount of time, each droplet documented as the process transforms the elements. Through this process, we see change. We see time. We see truth. This documentation of change and time through natural elements is where the artwork comes full circle. Sculpture is how I bring to life the dark corners of my mind. There have always been images of creatures, geology, and botanical life swirling around my head. Images that often include spires of exoskeleton, creeping tendrils searching for sustenance, or something that moves in an unnatural way. After years of envisioning and automatically sketching out these "things" it is beginning to get a bit crowded in there. It was time to excise this world in my mind and bring it into existence through my hands.

This article describes the author’s experience assisting Portuguese artist Miguel Palma during his 2010 residency at the Montalvo Arts Center. The author’s role included helping Palma secure materials, coordinating logistics, and assisting with installation both at SJSU and a satellite display at the San Jose Convention Center.

This article introduces Miguel Palma, a Lisbon-based multimedia artist who creates large-scale installations and sculptures from industrial, mechanical, and found objects. While in residence at Montalvo Arts Center in 2010, Palma produced In Image We Trust, a rotating disc installation topped with miniature figures, vehicles, and maps, recorded in real time by a camera hidden in a model fighter plane.

Many scholars and observes have noted the similarities between Fremont-attributed rock art and Fremont anthropomorphic clay figurines. An established Fremont rock art typology has been recognized yet no typology has been created to categorize and describe Fremont figurines. Although some of the characteristics utilized to describe Fremont rock art apply to Fremont anthropomorphic clay figurines, the limits of unfired clay as a medium to represent the human figure, give the figurines unique characteristics distinct from the rock art types.

Manet’s modernist depiction of the female nude as seen in Olympia sent shockwaves throughout the art world and forever changed the way we view nudes. Camille Lemonnier described the nude as such in 1870 “ The nude was modesty only if it is not a transitory state. It hides nothing because there is nothing to hide. The moment it hides something it becomes prurient, for in reality it shows it all the better. In order to stay virgin the nude in art must be impersonal and must not particularize; art has no need of a beauty spot upon the neck …
