Touching The Unreal: The Definition, Narrative Strategies, And Aesthetics Of 3d Cartoon Narratives., Nathan Snow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
"Touching the Unreal" follows the structure set out by Scott McCloud in Understanding Comics to argue that understanding cartoons is serious business and requires that we define the art form, outline its basic tenets, and theorize how the mind understands it. The dissertation argues for a new definition of 3D computer generated cartoons, beginning with the most basic definition applicable to all forms of animation and taking into account new technological developments before arriving at the 3D cartoon narratives of today. The dissertation outlines the basic facets of 3D cartoon narratives in terms of narrative and aesthetics, arguing that, in …

French Wallpaper Decors: Papiers Peints In Homes Of The American South, Christine Speare
MA Theses
French wood-block printed wallpaper is a very unique mural art form, yet often neglected. With this historical lack of attention, few academics have devoted themselves to the study of the topic, especially in the United States; and yet, wallpaper can reveal so much about past styles, settings, and collectors. Due to the historical changes in fashion, natural aging, weather, war, and neglect, a considerably limited number of collections continue to hang in situ in the American South in relation to the abundant examples found in the Northeast that have been better documented. Yet, the South’s historic affinity for all that …

Each book has original recipe cards; therefore, each is a variant, as the recipes will be different. The recipes represent her family life growing up where she felt warm & safe 'inside the kitchen with soup on the stove and bread in the oven.' Today the environment she lives in is 'frayed, full of loose ends, and knots.' Using this backdrop of happiness that the recipes represent for her she presents eight questions for us about the current status of our society--Why can't …

1 volume, 80 pages. "A visual retelling of creation, Mikhail Mishin's Endless Bridge utilizes juxtapositions and stark comparisons in a narrative that spans from birth to death and back again. iPhone photos, newspaper clippings and other found materials are the vocabulary used in this book in which light is separated from dark, and order emerges from chaos, only to revert back into nothingness. Images in this book have the quality of archaeological artifacts, where the transient qualities of an inflated tarp, a light reflection on the pavement or footprint in the concrete are highlighted. 1 volume. 'Voyagers' consists almost entirely of anonymous black-and-white snapshots of people in various postures of reading in living rooms, on beds, at the beach, eating breakfast. We can't see what these readers are thinking, but Catanese occasionally breaks the hypnotic typological rhythm to reveal a new photographic element - a pyramid, a starry night, sunlight blindingly glowing through a window - giving us brief glimpses of the readers' potential narrative journeys. A wordless book with the size and feel of a vintage paperback found at a flea market, 'Voyagers' reminds us of the power and intimacy of our relationship …

Enhancing Handbag Design Through Anti-Counterfeit Technology, Kylie R. Carroll
UROP Posters
In recent years, the presence of counterfeit goods has become a $600 billion global industry, encompassing markets ranging from designer luxury goods to pharmaceuticals. This paper identifies the threat that this increased counterfeit presence poses on the high-end handbag market. Increased counterfeit quality is significantly contributing to the deception of consumers when attempting to purchase authentic designer handbags. In response to this increased threat, numerous designer brands have begun to adopt anti-counterfeit technologies with both track-and-trace and authentication agendas, to enhance the security of their products against the counterfeit industry. Several variations of anti-counterfeit solutions exist, and this paper specifically …

Using The Fine Arts To Illustrate Degrees Of Innovation: From The High Renaissance To Cubism, Kimball P. Marshall Ph.D., Rene Desborde Ph.D.
Atlantic Marketing Journal
This paper applies the marketing innovation concepts of continuous innovation, dynamically continuous innovation, and discontinuous innovation to the fine arts to suggest challenges artists face in gaining acceptance of new styles. This paper reviews shifts in broad visual arts styles from the High Renaissance to Cubism in order to illustrate these marketing innovation concepts and to indicate the roles that marketing might play in generating market acceptance of new artistic styles. These marketing roles, as suggested by the four “Ps” of marketing (product, place, promotion, and price) become particularly evident with the development of Impressionism as an illustration of dynamically …

Exploring Illusions Of Height In Suit Design, Michael P. Lee
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
Objective: The goal of this research was to explore how the design of clothing, specifically the design of the suit, can create height illusions.
Background: Taller people enjoy many advantages, such as increased income and perceived attractiveness. These advantages motivate people to try to appear taller than they actually are, and clothing experts provide advice on how to accomplish this. However, there is little empirical evidence to validate the illusory effects clothing might have on overall height perception. The few studies that have explored illusions of body size created by clothing design have been limited in two important ways – …
