The title opens with the final paragraph from Darwin's On the Origin of Species along with a reworking of the same text by the artist that takes on a less humanist angle: an angle that that embraces co-emergence and making kin with our surroundings (in the words of Donna Haraway) rather than the "war of nature" and the hierarchical …

Place-Based Practice: Landscape And Artistic Identity In An Elementary Art Classroom, Mark Graham, Molly Neves
Faculty Publications
The desert and mountains where Molly and I grew up had a profound influence on our sense of self and our artistic practice. Molly describes her experiences with connecting place to her own artistic identity and to her work as an elementary art teacher: As an elementary art specialist, I wondered if my students had similar experiences related to place. I wanted to know how elementary students might use art as a method of inquiry to explore how place contributed to their sense of identity. I also wanted to connect my artistic identity with my teaching. My experiences and understanding …

Polyanthroponemia: A Pursuit Of Mystery, Magdolene Dykstra
Theses and Dissertations
I wish I could believe in something. Having grown up in a religious household, I have continually teetered between faith and doubt. Landscapes seen and unseen are my last source of awe; here my doubt is suspended – for a moment. Using unfired clay, I create alternate landscapes inspired by sublime philosophy. The sublime experience is born in a sense of amazement linked to fear of something beyond our understanding or control. The amazing intricacy of microbiology, a whole universe existing alongside and inside us, fascinates me. The abundance of unfamiliar life in my work triggers a cautious curiosity. My …

Touching The Unreal: The Definition, Narrative Strategies, And Aesthetics Of 3d Cartoon Narratives., Nathan Snow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
"Touching the Unreal" follows the structure set out by Scott McCloud in Understanding Comics to argue that understanding cartoons is serious business and requires that we define the art form, outline its basic tenets, and theorize how the mind understands it. The dissertation argues for a new definition of 3D computer generated cartoons, beginning with the most basic definition applicable to all forms of animation and taking into account new technological developments before arriving at the 3D cartoon narratives of today. The dissertation outlines the basic facets of 3D cartoon narratives in terms of narrative and aesthetics, arguing that, in …

French Wallpaper Decors: Papiers Peints In Homes Of The American South, Christine Speare
MA Theses
French wood-block printed wallpaper is a very unique mural art form, yet often neglected. With this historical lack of attention, few academics have devoted themselves to the study of the topic, especially in the United States; and yet, wallpaper can reveal so much about past styles, settings, and collectors. Due to the historical changes in fashion, natural aging, weather, war, and neglect, a considerably limited number of collections continue to hang in situ in the American South in relation to the abundant examples found in the Northeast that have been better documented. Yet, the South’s historic affinity for all that …
