My Clothing Is Me: Embracing Adhd In Traditional Qatari Apparel, Rabab Abdulla
Theses and Dissertations
Children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) are often secluded from society, as the condition is perceived to be a defect. These children constantly fidget, move, lose track of time, and forget to complete tasks, leading them to struggle within existing social environments. Additionally, in Qatar there is a need to educate society about ADHD. This research explores wearable solutions that alter behaviors through physical interactions and sensory engagements. In response to the challenges faced by ADHD, Qatari traditional attire has been customized to support children with time management, and communication between child, parent, and society. Additionally, these wearables …

Manufactured By Nature: Growing Generatively Designed Products, Mohammad Jawad
Theses and Dissertations
Mass production and assembly lines are yesterday’s manufacturing methods. They have exhausted Earth’s resources and limited the possibilities of design in terms of both form and material, prompting designers to search for new processes. A new generation of making includes biomimicry-inspired technologies such as 3D printing and parametric simulation, which have transformed the production paradigm. Utilizing nature as industry, this thesis explores the possibility of “growing” designed objects by employing nature’s own processes and resources. It integrates bio materials, generative design and additive manufacturing to produce objects for a post-industrial world. The project outcomes employ natural minerals, crystallization and 3D …

The Perioperative Patient Experience Of Hand And Wrist Surgical Patients: An Exploratory Study Using Patient Journey Mapping, Else F. De Ridder, Tessa Dekkers, Jarry T. Porsius, Gerald Kraan, Marijke Melles
Patient Experience Journal
Patient-centred care is becoming more important in healthcare. The success of patient-centred care can be assessed by exploring the patient experience through a patient journey map. As the number of outpatient surgeries is increasing, it is important to reveal the specific characteristics of this type of surgery. The perioperative patient experience is considered very important for outpatient surgery, because all perioperative activities are condensed in one day. To investigate this experience, we performed a case study of hand and wrist surgery. Six teams of two industrial design engineering students interviewed 40 patients in total in two private and two public …

Investigation Of Compression Strength Of Bliss Style Corrugated Fiberboard Boxes, Javier De La Fuente, Jay Singh, Rebecca Kisch, Soma Roy, Daan Peleman
Journal of Applied Packaging Research
The global demand for corrugated fiberboard is projected to experience a significant upsurge in the near future. Based on the end-use, packaging for processed and fresh food categories accounted for approximately 39% of the overall consumption of corrugated fiberboard in 2015. With key advantages such as providing an uninterrupted bottom, laminated corners for higher stacking strength, increased material use efficiency, side cutout options for display at retail and a wide range of styles over other styles of containers, Bliss style boxes find prominence in the agriculture sector. While numerous predictive strength models associating corrugated fiberboard material specifications to the box …

Our project focuses on the lack of community in the South Philadelphia area and the high crime rates that are a result of this. We propose a monthly social event to be hosted at the parks and rec centers that are being revitalized by the state. We will start a sponsorship with Amazon who now owns Whole Foods as well as Aldi’s to promote healthy eating as well as provide food for the events.

"Cross Like a Boss" is an innovative solution to addressing pedestrian safety in South Philadelphia through policy changes. Included in the campaign is an RFID chip scanner card located at every major pedestrian crash hotspot which (1) allows users such as older adults, persons with disabilities, and children to have longer time crossing the street and (2) turn on audio options saying the word "Walk" in different languages corresponding to the major demographics of South Philadelphia. In addition, our new crosswalk policies involve a button for LED flashing lights along the crosswalk which alerts drivers in advance that there is …

The third day of Nexus Maximus was spent working on our poster and getting our final ideas together to present the pitch to our audience. We all worked side by side in one of the DEC classrooms working on putting our thoughts into bullet points and developing the graphics for the board. My group member and I went to the poster workshop and got inspired to create the board layout. We wanted to keep the board as simple as possible with easy to read graphics and bullet points so that the viewer could easily follow our process and understand what …
