Old English Character Recognition Using Neural Networks, Sattajit Sutradhar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Character recognition has been capturing the interest of researchers since the beginning of the twentieth century. While the Optical Character Recognition for printed material is very robust and widespread nowadays, the recognition of handwritten materials lags behind. In our digital era more and more historical, handwritten documents are digitized and made available to the general public. However, these digital copies of handwritten materials lack the automatic content recognition feature of their printed materials counterparts. We are proposing a practical, accurate, and computationally efficient method for Old English character recognition from manuscript images. Our method relies on a modern machine learning …
Novel Support Vector Machines For Diverse Learning Paradigms, 2018 Virginia Commonwealth University
Novel Support Vector Machines For Diverse Learning Paradigms, Gabriella A. Melki
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation introduces novel support vector machines (SVM) for the following traditional and non-traditional learning paradigms: Online classification, Multi-Target Regression, Multiple-Instance classification, and Data Stream classification.
Three multi-target support vector regression (SVR) models are first presented. The first involves building independent, single-target SVR models for each target. The second builds an ensemble of randomly chained models using the first single-target method as a base model. The third calculates the targets' correlations and forms a maximum correlation chain, which is used to build a single chained SVR model, improving the model's prediction performance, while reducing computational complexity.
Under the multi-instance paradigm, …

Sports Analytics With Computer Vision, 2018 The College of Wooster
Sports Analytics With Computer Vision, Colby T. Jeffries
Senior Independent Study Theses
Computer vision in sports analytics is a relatively new development. With multi-million dollar systems like STATS’s SportVu, professional basketball teams are able to collect extremely fine-detailed data better than ever before. This concept can be scaled down to provide similar statistics collection to college and high school basketball teams. Here we investigate the creation of such a system using open-source technologies and less expensive hardware. In addition, using a similar technology, we examine basketball free throws to see whether a shooter’s form has a specific relationship to a shot’s outcome. A system that learns this relationship could be used to …

PreSS was developed and validated in …
A Practical And Efficient Algorithm For The K-Mismatch Shortest Unique Substring Finding Problem, 2018 Eastern Washington University
A Practical And Efficient Algorithm For The K-Mismatch Shortest Unique Substring Finding Problem, Daniel Robert Allen
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
This thesis revisits the k-mismatch shortest unique substring (SUS) finding problem and demonstrates that a technique recently presented in the context of solving the k-mismatch average common substring problem can be adapted and combined with parts of the existing solution, resulting in a new algorithm which has expected time complexity of O(n logk n), while maintaining a practical space complexity at O(kn), where n is the string length. When k > 0, which is the hard case, the new proposal significantly improves the any-case O(n2) time complexity of the prior best method for k-mismatch SUS finding. Experimental study …

Support Vector Machines For Image Spam Analysis, Aneri Chavda, Katerina Potika, Fabio Di Troia, Mark Stamp
Faculty Publications, Computer Science
Email is one of the most common forms of digital communication. Spam is unsolicited bulk email, while image spam consists of spam text embedded inside an image. Image spam is used as a means to evade text-based spam filters, and hence image spam poses a threat to email-based communication. In this research, we analyze image spam detection using support vector machines (SVMs), which we train on a wide variety of image features. We use a linear SVM to quantify the relative importance of the features under consideration. We also develop and analyze a realistic “challenge” dataset that illustrates the limitations …

A fundamental role of the Hsp90 and Cdc37 chaperones in mediating conformational development and activation of diverse protein kinase clients is essential in signal transduction. There has been increasing evidence that the Hsp90-Cdc37 system executes its chaperoning duties by recognizing conformational instability of kinase clients and modulating their folding landscapes. The recent cryo-electron microscopy structure of the Hsp90-Cdc37- Cdk4 kinase complex has provided a framework for dissecting regulatory principles underlying differentiation and recruitment of protein kinase clients to the chaperone machinery. In this work, we have combined atomistic simulations with protein stability and network-based rigidity decomposition analyses to characterize dynamic …
Virtual Reality As A Training Tool To Treat Physical Inactivity In Children, 2017 Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center
Virtual Reality As A Training Tool To Treat Physical Inactivity In Children, Adam W. Kiefer, David Pincus, Michael J. Richardson, Gregory D. Myer
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Lack of adequate physical activity in children is an epidemic that can result in obesity and other poor health outcomes across the lifespan. Physical activity interventions focused on motor skill competence continue to be developed, but some interventions, such as neuromuscular training (NMT), may be limited in how early they can be implemented due to dependence on the child’s level of cognitive and perceptual-motor development. Early implementation of motor-rich activities that support motor skill development in children is critical for the development of healthy levels of physical activity that carry through into adulthood. Virtual reality (VR) training may be beneficial …

Statistical Analysis Of Momentum In Basketball, 2017 Bowling Green State University
Statistical Analysis Of Momentum In Basketball, Mackenzi Stump
Honors Projects
The “hot hand” in sports has been debated for as long as sports have been around. The debate involves whether streaks and slumps in sports are true phenomena or just simply perceptions in the mind of the human viewer. This statistical analysis of momentum in basketball analyzes the distribution of time between scoring events for the BGSU Women’s Basketball team from 2011-2017. We discuss how the distribution of time between scoring events changes with normal game factors such as location of the game, game outcome, and several other factors. If scoring events during a game were always randomly distributed, or …
Self-Assembly Of Tiles: Theoretical Models, The Power Of Signals, And Local Computing, 2017 The University of Western Ontario
Self-Assembly Of Tiles: Theoretical Models, The Power Of Signals, And Local Computing, Amirhossein Simjour
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
DNA-based self-assembly is an autonomous process whereby a disordered system of DNA sequences forms an organized structure or pattern as a consequence of Watson-Crick complementarity of DNA sequences, without external direction.
Here, we propose self-assembly (SA) hypergraph automata as an automata-theoretic model for patterned self-assembly. We investigate the computational power of SA-hypergraph automata and show that for every recognizable picture language, there exists an SA-hypergraph automaton that accepts this language. Conversely, we prove that for any restricted SA-hypergraph automaton, there exists a Wang Tile System, a model for recognizable picture languages, that accepts the same language.
Moreover, we investigate the …
