The New York State Dental Journal

The origins of the current “opioid epidemic” sweeping America with its consequent overdose related deaths has resulted in numerous publications accusing the dental profession of excessively prescribing narcotic analgesics leading to the initial addictive episode. These allusions have prompted the national organization representing New York States’ almost 600 oral and maxillofacial surgeons to develop and promulgate in its official journal , a position paper detailing a non-narcotic pain management regimen to alleviate post operative discomfort. However, their pronouncement suggests prescribing a maximum daily dosage of ibuprofen which has previously been documented as causing myocardial infarction and stroke in vulnerable older …

Development Of A Portable And Rapid Decalcification Device For Oral Hard Tissue Specimens, Upasana Das, Vijayalakshmi Bhat, Taniya Feroz, Sowmya Sv, Dominic Augustine

Annual Research Symposium

Decalcification is a routinely carried out procedure by oral pathologists, as the lesions involving the pulp can only be seen and identified through decalcified sections. The present methods involve usage of chemical agents, either with inorganic acids which dissolves the calcium to form soluble calcium salts or with chelating agents. Even though the chelating agents preserve the tissue morphology and show excellent microscopic picture, it has less diagnostic efficacy, as the time taken for it to decalcify the specimens is considerably high. It becomes important for us to develop a decalcification technique which will be faster and will maintain the …

Geranylgeraniol (Ggoh), Incorporated Into A Bone Cement Pellet Promotes Osteoclast Function And Healing In A Model Of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis Of The Jaw, George J Feldman, David Young, Theresa Freeman, Lauren Israel, Daniel Taub, Robert Diecidue

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: There is no cause -based treatment for Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ). MRONJ is a morbid condition including exposed, infected bone and mandibular fractures in osteoporotic individuals and metastatic cancers patients treated with nitrogen containing bisphosphonates (NBP). NBPs inhibit farnesyl diphosphate synthase (FDPS) in the mevalonate pathway, depriving osteoclasts and other bone cells of small GTPases necessary for their function and survival. We test the hypothesis that geranylgeraniol (GGOH),a metabolite downstream of FDPS, when incorporated into a bone cement pellet, enhances osteoclast function and promotes local bone healing in

METHODS:

RESULTS: The release of GGOH from bone cement …

Enigmatic Cervicofacial Actinomycosis Post Radiotherapy - A Case Report, Amanda Phoon Nguyen

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Although thought to be uncommon, it is believed that cervicofacial actinomycosis is underreported due to frequent misdiagnosis. It has been called the “most misdiagnosed disease by experienced clinicians”. A wide range of dental procedures or trauma, including tooth eruption, may precipitate actinomycosis by enabling microorganisms to penetrate the deeper tissue layers via an entry point. This infective disease is significant due to its potentially aggressive and locally destructive nature. This case describes a patient diagnosed with cervicofacial actinomycosis. Her history prior to this was significant for proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, and T4aN0M0 (AJCC 7th Edition) squamous cell carcinoma of the right …
