Based on the Sociocultural Theory of Mind (Vygotsky 2004) this qualitative study explores the development of novice TAs’ cognition in relation to FL teaching and applies dynamic assessment procedures (Sternberg and Grigorenko 2002, Lantolf and Poehner 2004) to the concrete practices of teacher education and supervision. The following questions frame the study: 1) Do novice TAs apply pedagogical knowledge from coursework on FL teaching to their own classroom practices and, if so, how? and 2) How can teacher supervision and specifically the use of dynamic assessment assist in the development of principled practice based on pedagogical content knowledge and not …

Two Rooms And A Concept [Nercomp, June 5, 2007], Elizabeth Tilley
Two Rooms And A Concept [Nercomp, June 5, 2007], Elizabeth Tilley
Library Commons
Providing a collaborative learning space with appropriate services and resources for our undergraduate clientele, but with just two physical rooms, a limited budget and the commons concept to guide our decisions, was challenging. The context and mission of the Library within the University were important considerations and the theoretical and practical drivers for change as they relate to our goals and aims will be examined. Creativity in the use of space and clear, focused project management were also key factors in creating a successful Commons environment. The results of the changes made, and an assessment and evaluation of the project …

Not Exactly Trading Spaces: The Wesleyan University Library Information Commons [Nercomp, June 5, 2007], Dale Lee, Diane Klare, Pat Tully
Library Commons
In September 2005, Wesleyan University Library, Information Technology Services, and the Student Academic Resources Network (SARN), an umbrella organization for a variety of services, premiered a prototype Information Commons in Olin Library. Technology assistance, traditional reference, writing tutors and information about academic support services are now in one place, providing one-stop shopping for students. Workstations in the Commons facilitate group and individual work, with or without technology, while fitting aesthetically into a grand space combining traditional and modern elements. Some features of the Commons have been immediately successful, while others are changing to increase usage. Reference staff and student technology …

Library Commons
The term commons has been used in library, information and technology parlance since before 1990: the Information – Learning – Knowledge - Research - Library – Creative – Patent Commons. Most uses of these terms refer to some combination of the continuum of high-touch high-tech patron services. Most Commons’ are focused intensely on patron needs, however defined, and housed in, or proximous to, a library. Some are new facilities, well-planned and financed, elaborately implemented, and well-resourced. Some, at the other end of the spectrum, are more concept than physical reality, but still provide, however minimally or incrementally, some of the …

Documenting Tragedy At The University Of Wisconsin-Madison: Historic Plaques, Remembrance Books, And Implications For Archives And Memory, Erin Passehl
Erin Passehl Stoddart
On August 24, 1970, a bomb exploded outside Sterling Hall on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The bombing killed an innocent physics researcher, injured three others, and devastated the physics department located inside Sterling Hall. This presentation considers two common themes: documenting “official” history and memory and implications for archives including the affect of collective and social memories on archives, collection policies, and access points. This presentation examines local agencies and their means of portraying and advancing histories and memories of the bombing over the past thirty-six years.

The Economics Of Water Utilization: Tools And Applications, Matt Bogard
Agriculture Department Seminar Series
Given worldwide problems of access to safe potable water, this presentation examines how tools of economics can aid in drafting appropriate mitigating policies. Utilizing partial equilibrium analysis, it demonstrates the role that prices play in social coordination and then applies the framework to real world examples. In addition it examines Pigouvian Taxation and Coasean Bargaining as two classic methods for dealing with externalities in the context of water pollution. Second-best solutions such as tradable permits and metered pricing by public utilities are discussed. This presentation concludes by examining the issues and challenges that policy makers face when trying to implement …
