E-Book Is Not A Four-Letter Word, Jamie G. Hazlitt, Jason Mitchell Nov 2018

E-Book Is Not A Four-Letter Word, Jamie G. Hazlitt, Jason Mitchell

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations

As the landscape of e-book publishers, platforms, and acquisition models continues to shift and expand, librarians and staff working in collection development and acquisitions do their best to stay on top of ever-changing decision-points and workflows.

At the William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University, twenty librarian-liaisons are also expected to stay informed of new or changing options when it comes time to select a format for monographs in their subject areas. But selection is a secondary responsibility for most of our liaisons, and information about changes in our e-book collection development shared via email or even through semi-regular …

Collections Decoded Presentation, Brick & Click 2017, Aisha Conner-Gaten, Kristyn Caragher, Tracy Drake

Aisha Conner-Gaten

How are collections processed and presented in regards to race and ethnicity? What is not collected and why? Who gets to say what is worth collecting? Operating from three distinct but interlocking perspectives, we will discuss our experiences navigating collection development and collection development policies as a Black woman archivist, a White woman anti-racist public librarian, and a Black woman academic librarian. We will look at the ways in which Black women as collections professionals face invisibility, coded language, and increased mental and emotional labor while operating in a profession that is 85.2% White. We will offer practical strategies for …

Operating from three distinct but interlocking perspectives, we will facilitate a discussion about navigating collection development and collection development policies while centering marginalized voices. The discussion will include practical strategies for developing anti-racist collection development practices and how anti-racist accomplices can both support and follow the lead of Black women librarians and archivists.

Recipe For A Healthy Collection Assessment, Paula Barnett-Ellis, Charlcie Pettway Vann Apr 2016

Recipe For A Healthy Collection Assessment, Paula Barnett-Ellis, Charlcie Pettway Vann

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

Collection assessments are conducted at the Houston Cole Library to ensure that current programs are supported adequately and to find out if materials are needed for newly added programs. They are conducted approximately every 5 years or sooner if needed for program reaccreditations.

Subject librarians prepare collection assessment reports using either a detailed long method with conspectus worksheets, or a short method with more numbers and less narrative. Ingredients are mixed together with the help of the technical services and acquisition departments to prepare needed data.

Assessment reports on various Library of Congress subjects have the same basic recipe. Some …

Give 'Em What They Want: Patron-Driven Collection Development, Karen S. Fischer, Hope Barton, Michael Wright, Kit Clatanoff Mar 2014

Give 'Em What They Want: Patron-Driven Collection Development, Karen S. Fischer, Hope Barton, Michael Wright, Kit Clatanoff

Hope I Barton

Patron-Driven Acquisitions (PDA) is the hot topic in collection management. It sets traditional notions of collection-building upside down, while also presenting vendors and publishers with very different business models. Collaborating with ebrary and YBP, the University of Iowa Libraries established a PDA pilot program in September 2009 which has proven to be extremely popular with users and seems to be working in the Libraries’ favor. PDA has advantages (you only buy materials that are used) but has some potential pitfalls too, like going broke quickly, or building an ebook collection that doesn’t necessarily fit in the long run. To help …

Nuanced And Timely: Capturing Collections Feedback At Point Of Use, Jane Nichols, Richard A. Stoddart, Terry Reese Oct 2013

Nuanced And Timely: Capturing Collections Feedback At Point Of Use, Jane Nichols, Richard A. Stoddart, Terry Reese

Rick A Stoddart

While libraries are using increasingly sophisticated metrics to determine electronic resources’ usefulness, impact and cost effectiveness, much of this data reflects past usage. More nuanced information is still needed to guide collection managers’ decisions about which content to purchase, borrow or deselect. To fill this gap, librarians at OSU Libraries and Press and Ohio State University Libraries are testing the utility of a pop-up survey to gather patron feedback at their point of use. By building an open-source application that inserts a survey between a citation and the full-text, librarians are better positioned to capture users’ real-time reasons for selecting …

Gist: Joining Ill, Acquisitions, And Collection Development At Eku, Kelly Smith

For libraries who embrace patron-driven acquisitions, the workflows of ILL, Acquisitions, and Collection Development are becoming more interdependent. Workflows that are traditionally siloed in different systems impede the efficient provision of library materials. The Getting It System Toolkit for ILLiad (http://www.gistlibrary.org/) provides an elegant solution to this problem.

User-Focused Acquisitions Strategies: Developing Collections For The 21st Century, Kelly Smith

Kelly Smith

With flat or declining budgets and rising prices, most libraries need to find new ways to provide access to the significant amount of content that our users need. Following a user-centered philosophy, Eastern Kentucky University Libraries have implemented several new approaches for acquiring print and electronic resources. Initiatives have included: Patron-driven eBook collections - both broad and subject-specific; article-level purchasing using Copyright Clearance Center’s Get it Now service; and ILL initiated collection development for print resources. The presenter described each initiative and discussed their effect on the budget, the usage of resources, and workflow processes. Future implications for organization and …

Librarians from Utah State University explain recent efforts to encourage subject librarians to take a more holistic view of their roles. We are shifting from a traditional emphasis primarily on collection development and refocusing on natural connections between collections, instruction, liaison, and reference service. The poster provides background about Utah State University’s situation and explains our approach to analyzing local needs and culture to inform development of a new organizational structure. We describe our vision of subject librarianship, the process by which we assessed librarians’ ideas and goals for performing as subject librarians, and the actions we are taking to …

Open Access And Conscious Selection, Kitti Canepi, Andrea Imre, Harold Way May 2006

Open Access And Conscious Selection, Kitti Canepi, Andrea Imre, Harold Way

Conference Papers and Presentations

Open Access resources (OA) are becoming more important in all types of libraries. Recent discussions on OA have focused on ILS access and availability of MARC records with little attention to a selection process for deciding whether or not to provide access to OA.

The presenters will outline some of the concerns with by-passing conscious selection, show how some services and systems are providing bibliographic access, offer information collected on the availability of finding aids for a group of OA titles, present selection criteria used by some database aggregators that include OA resources, and suggest possible selection process models.
