I Search: A Reflection On The Importance Of A Personal Connection, Eric Shannon, Leslie Inglis, Tracy Mendham

This session, led by two librarians and an adjunct faculty member, described the benefits of replacing a traditional research paper with an I Search paper (a more informal first person research narrative) for students taking a first year inquiry course. An I Search paper facilitates student learning by encouraging students to select a topic that piques their interest and places the focus on students’ personal research journeys. Although this assignment was designed for a semester-long credit-bearing course, we discussed ways to incorporate aspects of this assignment into a library one-shot.

Since 2017, a library director and English professor have been collaborating on an embedded librarian project for a required Critical Thinking seminar. Our guiding concept is inquiry-based learning, and we have seen students connect with information literacy more deeply as we encourage them to explore information resources and to consider what scholarly conversation means to them. Inspired by Safiya Umoja Noble’s Algorithms of Oppression, essays and lesson plans in Critical Library Pedagogy (Nicole Pagowsky and Kelly McElroy, eds.), and the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, this presentation described a critical pedagogy activity that interrogates systems of oppression in library research tools and challenges students to reflect on the emotional aspects of their research experience. We discussed how we have modified the activity for different courses and disciplines, classroom settings, and class session lengths. This activity is suitable for librarians who are beginning to consider how to incorporate critical pedagogy into their teaching.

Collaborating with your campus teaching and learning center is a key way to center the library at the heart of conversations on creative pedagogy and student learning. Librarians at a small college library will share how their collaboration has enabled their information literacy program to ripple across campus – expanding their teaching practice beyond the usual one-shot and shifting faculty perceptions of librarians as classroom partners. The presenters will describe how they have contributed their expertise to teaching center programming and administered a series of center-funded faculty grants for information literacy, digital literacy, and teaching with archival materials.

Textbook affordability is becoming a bigger and bigger problem for students. Access to textbooks is essential for students to be able to meet their learning needs and have equal opportunity to excel as their peers. Open Textbooks are one response to this issue, but while most library outreach is focused on faculty members, students are an underutilized voice in the open education conversation. This presentation aims to educate students on what open textbooks are, what their limitations are, and how all students can participate in advocating for more affordable course materials.

Rapid e-learning programs such as Articulate Storyline make it possible to develop highly interactive sharable content object reference model (SCORM) packages without advanced programming knowledge. These SCORM packages can be loaded into most learning management systems (LMS) and allow librarians to better gauge students' information literacy competency and create flipped instruction opportunities to allow for better use of valuable in-class time. Fake news has been shown to spread far faster than facts on social media platforms. Rampant fake news has led to deep political polarization and the undermining of basic democratic institutions. Skepticism is an important component of information literacy and has often been pointed to as the antidote to the fake news epidemic. Why are skepticism and information literacy failing so terrifically in this post-truth era? Since we have shifted most of our serial subscriptions from print to digital format, our students encounter “scientific journals” as abstractions, not as the tangible objects familiar to their instructors. Furthermore, since students interact with journals via bibliographic databases, they lose access to visual cues indicating the nature of individual works. I presented two learning activities to early career undergraduate science students. While evidence continues to build that information literacy (IL) is taught across university and college curricula at all student levels (Junsbai, Lowe & Tagge, 2016), challenges connecting IL to those curricula in meaningful ways persist (Julien, Gross, & Latham, 2018; Klomsri & Tedre, 2016; Bombaro 2013). Blending IL into social work education beyond traditional one-shot library sessions also remains a challenge as evidenced by the dearth of literature demonstrating sound instruction and assessment practices of IL in social work programs (Bausman & Ward, 2016; Kayser, Bowers, Jiang, & Bussey 2013; Johnson, Whitfield, & Grohe, 2011; Ismail, 2009; Brustman & Bernnard 2007; Bellard, 2005).

All assessment practitioners know the penultimate goal is loop closing. But we also live with the reality that assessment is also beholden to the Gods of Accountability. As assessment professionals, we dutifully attend to the cycle of improving student learning, but at each step in the cycle we must continue to hone our skills.
