Authority Control In Digital Commons: Why Bother?, Laura Edwards Jun 2018

Authority Control In Digital Commons: Why Bother?, Laura Edwards

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Authority control provided by Digital Commons is basic. Other than author names, Digital Commons does not provide much in the way of authority control for other fields, such as faculty advisor/mentor names or department names. Standardizing name fields has several benefits, not least of which is the increased precision of reports that institutions can create to highlight the impact of faculty mentorship activities as well as the scholarship output of departmental entities on campus. Institutions that want to ensure the consistency of names across submissions to their Digital Commons repository, especially for self-submitted submissions, must develop their own methods ...

Navigating Wms Analytics For The Right Data, Laura Edwards, Todd King, Kelly Smith

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The presenters shared lessons learned from using OCLC WorldShare Management System (WMS) Analytics to gather statistics and data for both internal and external reporting purposes. Existing WMS reporting functionality simplifies special projects such as inventories and clean-up initiatives. However, both Collection Evaluation and Report Designer have limitations that make getting accurate collections numbers difficult due to gaps in the available data.

Electronic Swiss Army Knife: Deploying An Online Reference Service As An Interdepartmental Multi-Use Tool, Laura Edwards, Kelly Smith, Jens Arneson

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

While Springshare’s LibAnswers product is marketed as an end-to-end online reference product, the Metadata & Discovery (M&D) team at EKU Libraries recognized the potential LibAnswers had to solve workflow problems within the team and provide faster service for our users. The M&D team envisioned using LibAnswers as a ticketing system for troubleshooting problems, managing workflow, assessment of eResources, and storing documentation. Since adopting the LibAnswers product over a year ago, the team has seen reduced confusion around the tracking of workflow tasks in the eResource lifecycle and a significant improvement in turnaround time on troubleshooting problems. In addition ...

Managing A Large Scale Project: Using Strengthsfinder In The Website Redesign, Laura Edwards, Cristina Tofan Sep 2016

Managing A Large Scale Project: Using Strengthsfinder In The Website Redesign, Laura Edwards, Cristina Tofan

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

After doing a library-wide StrengthsFinder assessment that highlighted the strengths of its individuals, EKU Libraries decided to put this strategy into practice by applying it to one of the most complex projects in the life of an academic library: the website redesign. This decentralized approach allowed project managers to align strengths-based teams with phases of the redesign that would most benefit from that team’s unique strengths.

50 Shades Of Ebooks With A Hint Of Pda, Laura Edwards, Victoria Koger Nov 2015

50 Shades Of Ebooks With A Hint Of Pda, Laura Edwards, Victoria Koger

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Institutionally licensed eBooks have not quite lived up to users’ needs and libraries’ expectations. Patrons accustomed to the ease of accessing eBooks purchased via commercial sites such as Amazon and Google Play are sometimes thrown for a loop when they encounter eBooks via the library’s site and the myriad restrictions that seem designed to turn users away. Libraries struggle with managing the complexities of eBook licensing and access, and staying on top of the differences between vendor platforms. Add to that the rapidly changing landscape of the ebook business landscape (rocketing STL prices, conflicting access models for ebooks on ...

Gist: Joining Ill, Acquisitions, And Collection Development At Eku, Kelly Smith Sep 2013

Gist: Joining Ill, Acquisitions, And Collection Development At Eku, Kelly Smith

Library Faculty and Staff Papers and Presentations

For libraries who embrace patron-driven acquisitions, the workflows of ILL, Acquisitions, and Collection Development are becoming more interdependent. Workflows that are traditionally siloed in different systems impede the efficient provision of library materials. The Getting It System Toolkit for ILLiad (http://www.gistlibrary.org/) provides an elegant solution to this problem.

User-Focused Acquisitions Strategies: Developing Collections For The 21st Century, Kelly Smith

Library Faculty and Staff Papers and Presentations

With flat or declining budgets and rising prices, most libraries need to find new ways to provide access to the significant amount of content that our users need. Following a user-centered philosophy, Eastern Kentucky University Libraries have implemented several new approaches for acquiring print and electronic resources. Initiatives have included: Patron-driven eBook collections - both broad and subject-specific; article-level purchasing using Copyright Clearance Center’s Get it Now service; and ILL initiated collection development for print resources. The presenter described each initiative and discussed their effect on the budget, the usage of resources, and workflow processes. Future implications for organization and ...

Worst Case Scenario: Your Library Without Subscription Databases, Julie S. George, Clay Howard Sep 2011

Worst Case Scenario: Your Library Without Subscription Databases, Julie S. George, Clay Howard

Library Faculty and Staff Papers and Presentations

In recent years, an unsustainable economic model has emerged in many academic libraries—skyrocketing journal subscription costs coupled with diminishing materials budgets. What if vendor prices for journal subscriptions rise so fast that our budgets just can’t keep pace? Could we continue to meet the needs of our patrons if we had to cut EBSCO and other expensive aggregator databases? And for those of us charged with teaching good research skills, how would instruction change? In this interactive session we will tackle the above questions, present some open source alternatives to subscription databases, and discuss “vendor-free” information literacy instruction.

Co-presented at the 2010 Charleston Confernece as part of the "Innovative Practices in Electronic Resources and Acquisition Management" preconference workshop.

Clean Up Your Act! A Voyager Acquisitions/Serials Overhaul For Greater Efficiency, Kelly Smith, Amy Tabb Sep 2010

Clean Up Your Act! A Voyager Acquisitions/Serials Overhaul For Greater Efficiency, Kelly Smith, Amy Tabb

Library Faculty and Staff Papers and Presentations

The acquisitions and continuing resources teams at EKU Libraries used the occasion of several library staff retirements as an opportunity to reevaluate departmental processes. In doing so, we solved two major problems: • We completely overhauled our Voyager ILS ledger structure to allow for more granular reporting, specifically in relation to electronic resources and online periodicals. • We developed a better understanding of the relationship between the acquisitions, serials check-in, and cataloging functions in Voyager, allowing us to develop more seamless workflows between the acquisitions and continuing resources teams and to do a large order record clean-up project.

Hot To Prot: Enhanced Instruction Skills Through Peer-Review, Karen Gilbert, Kevin L. Jones, Cindy Judd

Library Faculty and Staff Papers and Presentations

In order to improve both library instruction and formative evaluation, EKU Libraries’ Public Services librarians located and adapted Samson & McCrea’s (2008) Peer Review of Teaching model (PROT). This presentation explained the three major elements of the PROT, what it specifically evaluates, how it was implemented, and what library instructors have gained from its use.

Creative Solutions For Managing Eresources Workflow, Kelly Smith, Laura Edwards May 2010

Creative Solutions For Managing Eresources Workflow, Kelly Smith, Laura Edwards

Library Faculty and Staff Papers and Presentations

As the number of eResources we acquire continues to grow, Eastern Kentucky University Libraries have attempted to develop more effective ways to manage our online collections. Traditional methods for dealing with print resources do not apply to the entire eResources lifecycle, and we have been challenged to think creatively about possible solutions. Our strategies have included adjusting the staffing model of the eResources team, analyzing our workflow using process mapping to identify areas of improvement, and finding appropriate ways to incorporate support staff into the eResources workflow.

EKU Libraries is in its fourth year of providing an Instant Messaging reference service. We have seen our statistics increase over that time as we have made changes to the way we offer our service, especially when we added the Meebome widgets throughout the website. Recently, EKU Libraries implemented a new IM platform in order to extend the way we provide online reference help. LibraryH3lp offers simultaneous logins, queues to send questions to librarians with appropriate subject specialties, and a seamless integration with our existing Meebome widgets. Learn about our efforts to improve the EKU Libraries "Ask Us" service. Hear ...

Nextgen Acquisitions: A Paradigm Shift For A New Era, Kelly Smith, Kathryn Harnish Nov 2009

Nextgen Acquisitions: A Paradigm Shift For A New Era, Kelly Smith, Kathryn Harnish

Library Faculty and Staff Papers and Presentations

Current integrated library systems traditionally combine both user discovery and inventory management applications, merging very different functional needs into a single environment. As libraries look to the future, our service platforms must evolve in a way that enables both more efficient management and more effective presentation of a wide array of library resources. For many libraries, the first step in the process has been to decouple the user discovery and delivery environment, separating the needs for patron presentation from the requirements for back-office management. In this way, libraries have attempted to improve the enduser experience.

This presentation examines how new ...

The Inexorable March To Online-Only Journal Subscriptions, Kelly Smith, Patricia Thompson

Library Faculty and Staff Papers and Presentations

There is not a “one size fits all” approach to shifting journal collections from print to online only, nor are there existing “best practices” for tackling this problem. This presentation addresses criteria used by different libraries, complications experienced, and strategies employed.

Representing Ejournals In The Library Catalog, Kelly Smith Nov 2007

Representing Ejournals In The Library Catalog, Kelly Smith

Library Faculty and Staff Papers and Presentations

Academic library catalogs as they currently exist are essentially static databases – they are searchable versions of card catalogs. Even the display in many systems resembles the old-fashioned card. By contrast, eJournals (and websites and eBooks, for that matter) contain dynamic information. URLs change, platforms change, vendors change, the same title is hosted on multiple changing platforms. Is it possible with today’s library catalog to effectively present metadata for online formats when each change must be input manually? Can the catalog truly represent a complete listing of our holdings in this dynamic and largely unstable electronic publishing model? This presentation ...
