Branching Out: Consolidating An Interlibrary Loan Department Across Multiple Campuses With Illiad, Ashley T. Hoffman, Rosemary Humphrey, Caralia Gallagher

Ashley T. Hoffman

Interlibrary Loan departments are no stranger to collaboration between campuses. Therefore, when the consolidation of the two institutions of Kennesaw State University and Southern Polytechnic State University was announced, their respective interlibrary loan departments rose to the challenge with - if not enthusiasm - optimism and the willingness to try new ideas and strategies to merge the two units. This presentation will cover the alternatives considered, strategies chosen, and the implementation process undertaken to create a unified interlibrary loan department across two campuses and four libraries using Atlas' ILLiad software. We will cover not only policy decisions but workflow procedures and technical ...

Natural History Collections: #11;Connecting With Faculty And Content, Stacey Knight-Davis, Todd A. Bruns

Todd A. Bruns

For well over a century, American biologists have built collection of plants, animals, fungi, insects, and other natural materials. Often, these collections serve as a record of the unique biodiversity of the local area and provide a record of change over time. Many taxonomic, genetic, and environmental discoveries lay waiting in the drawers and cupboards in which these specimens are stored. / / Uploading images of natural history specimens to Digital Commons allows them to be easily discovered in with a web search, leading the user back to the home collection. As an example, a search for 'big leaf magnolia Illinois' in ...

Ripple Effect: Etds, Workflows, And Policies One Year After "A Bigger Splash", Todd Bruns, Stacey Knight-Davis

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Since 2008 EIU has been digitizing ETDs and making them available via the library catalog, I-Share (the state of IL consortia catalog), and WorldCat. It was only after ETDs were included in the institutional repository (The Keep) that the majority of faculty became fully aware of how accessible these theses had become. This dawning realization led to important conversations with faculty and other stakeholders about concerns regarding publishing, grant approval, and patents. Following these discussions new embargo policies and workflows were developed. In this presentation, we will provide statistics showing increased access to ETDs due to the repository, and describe ...

Since its creation in 2004, GIL Express has attempted to supplement traditional ILL services by providing a faster avenue for patrons to request and receive books. However, operating similar services from two different departments can lead to confusion for patrons and headaches for staff. For this project, we will analyze the methods employed by other schools in the USG system to improve the coordination of GIL Express and ILL services. We will present our findings as well as evaluate alternative solutions to streamline the process for both patrons and staff.

Open Culture At The Heart Of The University: Libraries As Multicommons, Anna K. Gold Sep 2013

Open Culture At The Heart Of The University: Libraries As Multicommons, Anna K. Gold

Anna K. Gold

The university library can be reconceptualized as a powerful engine for open culture. A generative and regenerative center that naturally brings disciplines, cultures, and generations together, the university library can expand its role in open culture far beyond sharing institutionally-produced research and data through open repositories. Drawing on the experience of a public polytechnic university, this presentation documents the emergence of a university library as a system of open culture programs and as a place where a speeding culture can stop to dialogue, think, and create: generating collective interactive learning; fostering collaboration with open data; cultivating open conversations and learning ...
