Showcase of Graduate Research and Creative Activities

Dyslexie is a font type that was created specifically to address the challenges that individuals with Dyslexia face. This font-type consists of distinctive characteristics in each letter that are suggested to be more easily distinguishable from one another, such as a bolded bottom portion of each letter, additional inter-letter spacing, a greater x-height, and capitalized letters that are slightly italicized and bolded. Although the author claims that it improves the reading performance of individuals with Dyslexia, the literature on its effectiveness is conflicting. The current study investigates the effectiveness of Dyslexie compared to two commonly used fonts on readers’ comprehension ...

#52 - Men's Private And Public Conformity To Masculine Norms, Jasmine Starks Nov 2019

#52 - Men's Private And Public Conformity To Masculine Norms, Jasmine Starks

Georgia Undergraduate Research Conference (GURC)

Society has a strong influence on how we think and behave. A result of societal norms is toxic masculinity, which addresses harmful effects that conforming to ideal masculine standards can have on a man. In this study, we analyzed the effects that masculine social norms would have on a male college population. The hypothesis was that heterosexual White males in the sample would conform to societal male norms, a topic covered in RW Connell’s “Masculinities”, and show influence of toxic masculinity. The study is preregistered at http://osf.io/5n4ex/. Participants (N = 65) were asked to answer the Conformity ...

Personal Standards But Not Maladaptive Evaluative Concerns Perfectionism Predict Exercise Dependency Over Time, Sarah E. Ernst, Irina A. Vanzhula, Cheri A. Levinson

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Exercise is generally thought to be beneficial for physical and mental health; however, when done in excess, exercise can lead to damaging physical, psychological, and social health consequences. This type of exercise is known as exercise dependency and is frequently associated with eating disorder pathology. Perfectionism (high or personal standards and maladaptive evaluative concerns) is a risk factor for eating disorders and is also associated with exercise dependency. However, no studies have examined longitudinal relationships between perfectionism and exercise dependency. The current study used a sample of adolescent females (N = 444) from a Southeastern United States high school, and participants ...

How News Media Coverage Of Crises Promotes Conspiracy Beliefs, Richard Kornrumpf, Adam Enders Phd Oct 2019

How News Media Coverage Of Crises Promotes Conspiracy Beliefs, Richard Kornrumpf, Adam Enders Phd

Posters-at-the-Capitol

While scholars of conspiracy theories have recently made great strides in understanding the basic nature and correlates of conspiratorial thinking, we still know little about how conspiracy beliefs are disseminated and communicated, especially when it comes to traditional media. In this instance, we use a unique experiment to investigate whether media coverage of mass shootings – complete with the uncertainty, conflicting reports, and dubious official narratives that characterize such coverage – provides the raw material for conspiracy theories and promotes conspiracy beliefs among viewers. We find that implicit conspiratorial information – that which causes confusion and foments uncertainty – does not enflame conspiracy beliefs ...

Water has been a lifeline of Indian agrarian society. The thriving agrarian economy requires water for irrigation and the need for resources to the evolution of indigenous technology through generations of communities. Kuhl irrigation system of Kangra is a community managed traditional irrigation systems found in western Himalayan. These are a centuries-old network of interconnected drainage channels that drain water from nearby khads (rivers) into the fields. The irrigation systems have codified customary laws, systems of collective action for maintenance and preservation and various traditional livelihoods.

Panel 8. Paper 8.3: Address Flood Threats To Protect Rural Landscape Heritage And Enhance Cultural Tourism, Dexell Aita, Diane Menzies

Rural Heritage - Landscapes and Beyond / PATRIMOINE RURAL: Paysages et au-delà

Apia has repeatedly been hit by floods exacerbated by climate change. Apia is the capital of the small island nation of Samoa, in the Pacific. The floods from three watersheds start high in the steep rural areas through which the streams traverse. The streams become rushing torrents, destroying the subsistence farms, soils, homes, crops and properties upstream. Downstream flooding impacts buildings, businesses and tourism in the small city as well as the ecology of the harbour, through repeated silt deposits.

A flood management project, which binds Fa’a Samoa, (Samoan cultural practices) to technical landscape management practice, can also lead ...

Technical Standards Literacy In Management Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips Jul 2019

Technical Standards Literacy In Management Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Industry standards have a significant impact on business as a means to eliminate waste, reduce costs, market products (e.g., for quality, safety, interoperability) and lessen liability (Thompson, 2011). Consequently, an understanding of and ability to use standards, agreed upon practices among interested or vested parties, is a critical workplace competency for those engaged in business and industry. To have a workforce competent in the use of standards, higher education curricula must be developed to integrate standards education at appropriate points within the curriculum. Despite the importance of standards, they are not universally integrated into the college and university curricula ...

Business Librarians Confronting Predatory Publishing, Marydee Ojala Jul 2019

Business Librarians Confronting Predatory Publishing, Marydee Ojala

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Predatory publishing is a scourge on the information/library landscape. They waste time, spread spurious information, diminish the power of scholarly research, and damage reputations. Cabell’s lists over 12,000 titles in its Blacklist, most of them in the sciences. Should business librarians be concerned about predatory journals? How can we help our faculty and grad students avoid publishing in fake titles, dissuade them from accepting invitations to be on editorial boards of shoddy journals, and warn them about deceptive conferences?

I'Ll Take Business Databases For 500, Christine Kickels

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Has your library struggled with how to roll out or sunset a new database? Ours has. We use emails, blog posts and peer to peer training, but haven't really been happy with the results. In a culture of assessment and gaming, it was time to try something else. This year we incorporated Quizizz and Kahoot into our rollouts with much success. I'll share our assessments as well as things we learned about the process.

A Lightning Introduction To Wrds, Ash Faulkner Jul 2019

A Lightning Introduction To Wrds, Ash Faulkner

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Wharton Research Data Services (commonly known as 'WRDS') is an essential data platform on many university campuses with a research-intensive business program. The platform can host a wide range of data subscriptions including BoardEx, Compustat, CRSP, IBES, Option Metrics, Thompson Reuters data and much more. Often a WRDS subscription is funded through the business program, rather than through the library, but it is essential that business librarians are familiar with this source and if at all possible are able to access and efficiently work through some of the more common data pull requests. As data literacy becomes an increasingly important ...

Mapping Il Skills To The Departmental Curriculum, Naomi Schemm

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Problem: some departments use your services heavily for IL instruction, to the point that content gets repetitive for some students. Others use your instruction not at all. Other class visits are hit or miss, based on whether or not you have a relationship with that particular instructor. Attempted solution: mapping specific information literacy skills and database usage onto certain critical classes in a given major. The presenter is piloting this curriculum & IL-skills mapping with the Marketing department in summer 2019, and will give an update on her progress thus far.

When Databases Are No Longer An Option: Teaching Students About Open Access Resources For Business Information, Teresa Williams Jul 2019

When Databases Are No Longer An Option: Teaching Students About Open Access Resources For Business Information, Teresa Williams

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Academic librarians spend a great deal of time teaching students how to use research databases to find business information, but the unfortunate reality is that students typically lose access to university subscription databases upon commencement. Without adequate training on reliable alternatives, new graduates can find themselves struggling to resolve their information needs as they transition into the business workplace.

To address this issue, the Business Librarian at Butler University Libraries created a Business Research Workshop (BRW) to teach students about open and public access resources for business information. What began a few years ago as a trial offering for five ...
