This presentation discusses the motivating factors behind the rise of the open access movement, including the rising costs of traditionally published journals, the perceived benefits to the classroom and student retention, as well as the broader benefits to the global community of information seekers/ scholars. Additionally, it discusses the current state of open access engagement at Augustana College, including the adoption of open educational resources in the classroom, as well as the current status and future goals for Augustana Digital Commons.

Textbook affordability is becoming a bigger and bigger problem for students. Access to textbooks is essential for students to be able to meet their learning needs and have equal opportunity to excel as their peers. Open Textbooks are one response to this issue, but while most library outreach is focused on faculty members, students are an underutilized voice in the open education conversation. This presentation aims to educate students on what open textbooks are, what their limitations are, and how all students can participate in advocating for more affordable course materials.

This short presentation will summarize the position of our publishing house in light of the Plan S statements, and review concrete actions taken in light of Plan S as of the date of the NYSCILIB 2019 event. In fall 2017, we initiated a migration of the University of Western Ontario’s 32 library-hosted journals from the bepress Digital Commons platform to the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. This was a response to concerns expressed by librarians and journal editors regarding potential implications of Elsevier’s August 2017 acquisition of bepress, including the possibility that Elsevier might place ads on their journal pages or increase fees for journal-hosting services. Our goal was to mitigate those concerns by ensuring that Western Libraries’ journal platform remained as open and community-driven as possible. Clemson University and the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) have collaborated since 2010 to develop the Open Parks Network, an open repository of over 230,000 digital objects and metadata records chronicling the diverse cultural and natural history of our nation’s parks, historic sites, and other protected areas. Initially funded by an Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant that ended in 2014, this joint effort to deliver wider public access to the unique resources located in NPS libraries, museums, and archives across the U.S. and territories is an intriguing case study in the dynamics of a relationship between …

This presentation was given in recognition of Open Access Week 2017. The presenter provided an introduction to open educational resources--what they are, where to find them, why they're being adopted by higher education institutions, and roles the library can play. The presenter covered details on CARLI's membership in the Open Textbook Network and what that participation means for Milner Library and Illinois State University. The presenter shared what she learned during OTN training sessions she attended in August 2017, including talking with faculty about open textbooks, tracking student savings, and building a program on campus.

In 2013 Dr. Robert Selden approached the Center for Digital Scholarship (CDS) at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) inquiring about the possibility of including interactive 3D models in a digital collection. Working with Dr. Selden, the CDS found a platform to which these models could be deposited and displayed. Concurrently, the CDS was actively promoting SFA’s institutional repository, SFA ScholarWorks. One guiding idea behind these IR-focused activities was the emphasis of the legitimacy of non-traditional works in respect to SFA ScholarWorks and the academic community as a whole. Writing a thesis or dissertation is hard, and now that most theses and dissertations are deposited and distributed electronically, graduating students face an additional complication: they must decide whether they want to make their dissertations immediately open access (OA), or, at universities that require OA, they must come to terms with the fact that their work will be OA. In this presentation, I survey and scrutinize the anxieties and myths surrounding OA theses and dissertations.

This presentation covers research on the physics and astronomy graduate students’ use and understanding of open access resources. The research, which was conducted in summer 2015, surveyed the physics and astronomy graduate students of Georgia Institute of Technology to discover how graduate students discover open access and other academic resources, as well as their level of awareness about open access in general and specific OA databases in particular. With the trend moving toward universities developing their own institutional repositories (IRs), the need to educate and empower the campus to embrace this new space for publishing research has grown exponentially. This session will provide a background on open access and IRs, including the many benefits and complex issues, as well as an overview of the scholarly communication crisis and the importance of authors’ rights education. The session will go on to provide practical examples and guidance from several pilot projects launched at Arcadia University that emphasized open access education and participation.

Open access within legal academia provides a case study for the effective use of digital formats to promote scholarship. The presenters review the background historical developments in this field, and consider the benefits and rationales for providing open access to legal scholarship, including the special faculty concerns arising from SSRN and its relationship to the institutional repository. Results from the presenters’ recent empirical study of the citation advantage for open access scholarship in American law reviews will be discussed and placed in broader context of the benefits of open access scholarship.

Undergraduates are often left out of conversations surrounding open access. While they may not share the same concerns about publishing and prestige as faculty and graduate students, they do consume vast amounts of information, and thus can benefit just as much as those farther in their academic careers by knowing how to find, evaluate, and use open access resources.
