Conference papers

To ensure graduates have the skill to work within the tourism industry, and spurred on by the paradigm shift in teaching due to Covid 19, this research focused on developing innovative solutions using technology. Using virtual assessment techniques, industry co-created evaluation, and integrated assessment, it explored how virtual field-trips can be developed as part of remote teaching methods. To provide context to the topic of sustainable tourism and technology, a student-led virtual seminar with industry was undertaken linking with TU Dublin Green Week 2021. In place of a fieldtrip using Google Earth and Screen-casto-matic, students created videos incorporating the sustainability …

What are the core technical knowledge, skills, and abilities that the profession requires in order to engage with our stakeholders in a meaningful way? Archivists must engage with their communities where they are and how they want to receive information, which is increasingly online.

Publications and Research

Throughout its Final Report, the Presidential Task Force on 21st Century Policing repeatedly called for a new form of civilian oversight: for police departments to involve community members in the process of developing and reviewing department policies on a variety of topics from use of new technologies to police training. The Task Force stressed that this sort of engagement is essential to promoting external legitimacy and building trust between policing agencies and the communities they serve. Yet as a number of police officials have acknowledged, community engagement around matters of policy raises a number of difficult questions—and there are few …

Using Social Media In The Classroom: Assessment Of Its Effectiveness., Jennifer Wright

Jennifer Wright Joe

Social media can be an effective tool in promoting critical thinking and collaboration in library instruction. Whether it is simple polls or a much more collaborative event, these methods engage students and allow them to interact with material, professors, and other students in an organized fashion that might not be feasible without the use of technology. However, many faculty members are quick to incorporate these new learning tools without regard to their effectiveness. In this session, several applications of social media will be presented and their effectiveness will be discussed. Then, to conclude, the participants will discuss the best way …

Fdi Spillovers In Tanzania`S Manufacturing Sector, Johansein Rutaihwa Jun 2013

Fdi Spillovers In Tanzania`S Manufacturing Sector, Johansein Rutaihwa

Johansein Rutaihwa

Using cross sectional data, this study analyses the spillover effects of foreign direct investment in Tanzania’s manufacturing sector. The findings reject a proposition that FDI intensity has improved domestic manufacturing firms productivity; no vertical technological spillovers occurred and a negative correlation between vertical spillover and FDI presence was found. Instead there is a positive correlation between FDI and horizontal technology spillover. The study, therefore, recommends that the government should make concerted efforts to ensure that FDI promotion addresses technology spillovers both within the industry and across the sector; as well as strengthening and widening the education system to enable it …

Using Technology And Online Counseling: The Future Is Now, Oscar T. Mcknight, Gregory Pollock, Kerri Carmichael

Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.

This research addresses how technology is transforming the world; specifically, how we live, communicate and interact. Two questions posed for counselors: first, should counselors avoid, minimize, maximize or embrace the online environment; and second, how does on-line counseling fit within the profession. In addition, reviewed are professional standards, certifications and in-practice issues. Findings suggest that counselors should embrace new technologies and assess best-practice protocols.

Splat: Spreading Innovation & Ideas, Amy E. Vecchione, Memo Cordova

Amy E. Vecchione

Libraries are never short on innovation, especially when budgets are lean. How can staff stay on top of the latest library trends, and empower individuals to think “lean and mean” when times demand creativity? One solution, developed in Idaho during a summit on developing services for digital natives, was to create a Special Projects Library Action Team (SPLAT). SPLAT members act in the crow’s nest capacity of technological change. They search and share innovative ideas, leads on projects, and experiment in social media statewide; vet ideas; and bring ideas back to the local level. Supported by the Idaho Commission for …

The Making Of A Social Librarian: How Blogs, Wikis And Facebook Have Changed One Librarian And Her Job, Jennifer Kelley Jan 2008

The Making Of A Social Librarian: How Blogs, Wikis And Facebook Have Changed One Librarian And Her Job, Jennifer Kelley

Jennifer Kelley

[Presentation Slides] According to Technorati, the blog search engine, there are 244 blogs that primarily concern themselves with libraries and so-called 2.0 technologies. The blogs range from the well known Tame the Web and Shifted Librarian to library students attempting to sort out the deluge of information on blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, social networking services and how these applications and services help, hinder, harm or haunt libraries and librarians. As libraries and librarians make decisions about how to reach out to patrons and communities, increasingly, the decisions we make involve social software applications.

In 2006, the author graduated from library …
