Manufacturing System And Supply Chain Analyses Related To Product Complexity And Sequenced Parts Delivery, Hui Sun Dec 2005

Manufacturing System And Supply Chain Analyses Related To Product Complexity And Sequenced Parts Delivery, Hui Sun

Doctoral Dissertations

Mixed model assembly has been widely used in many industries. It is applied in order to effectively deal with increasing product complexity. Sequencing and resequencing on a mixed-model assembly line is also complicated by high product complexity. To improve the performance of a mixed-model assembly system and the supply chain, one can develop efficient sequencing rules to address sequencing problems, and manage product complexity to reduce its negative impact on the production system. This research addresses aspects of sequence alteration and restoration on a mixed-model assembly line for the purpose of improving the performance of a manufacturing system and its …

Evaluation Of Engineering Plastic For Rollover Protective Structure Mounting, Robert Stephen Comer Dec 2005

Evaluation Of Engineering Plastic For Rollover Protective Structure Mounting, Robert Stephen Comer

Masters Theses

The agricultural industry has one of the highest fatality rates of any industry in the U. S. This death rate is largely due to deaths caused by roll over accidents while on agricultural vehicles. The addition of a Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS) has aided in lowering these high fatality rates on full-size tractors. Studies have shown that death rates have been reduced by as much as 98% with the addition of rollover protective structures. However, a large number of older tractors still do not utilize a ROPS. This is due to the difficulty of designing and creating a mounting structure. …

Impact Of Interconnection Photovoltaic/Wind System With Utility On Their Reliability Using A Fuzzy Scheme, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset

Dr. Adel A. Elbaset

Reliability analysis has been considered as an important step in any system design process. a reliable electrical power system means that the system which having sufficient power to feed the load demand during a certain period or in other word, having small Loss of Load Probability (LOLP). LOLP is defined as an expected fraction of load not met by its needed power from electrical power system during its lifetime. Photovoltaic (PV) / Wind Energy System (WES) hybrid electric power system (PV/WES HEPS) differs considerably from the utility grid (UG) in their performance and operating characteristics. With the interconnection of PV/WES …

Developing An Information System To Integrate A Manufacturing Firm And Its Supplier Base, Abhishek Padiyar May 2005

Developing An Information System To Integrate A Manufacturing Firm And Its Supplier Base, Abhishek Padiyar

Masters Theses

A manufacturing firm is encouraging their suppliers to achieve the goal of zero-defects. However, due to the high expectations set by the manufacturing firm, the suppliers are finding it quite challenging to be able to immediately react to the quality requirements of the manufacturing firm. The manufacturing firm wants to ensure that the suppliers take the necessary actions to eliminate the reoccurrence of specific non-conformities. This thesis illustrates the application of an information system that integrates the manufacturing firm with their supplier base. The information system is developed based on the framework of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). It …

Numerical Simulation Of Live Chaparral Fire Behavior Using Firetec, Lulu Sun, Xiangyang Zhou, Shankar Mahalingam, Jesse Canfield, Rodman Linn Mar 2005

Numerical Simulation Of Live Chaparral Fire Behavior Using Firetec, Lulu Sun, Xiangyang Zhou, Shankar Mahalingam, Jesse Canfield, Rodman Linn

Publications

Fire spread through chaparral fuels is a significant feature of wildland fire in southern California. In order to study the detailed physical processes involved during fire spread, FIRETEC, a coupled atmosphere/wildfire behavior model was refined to examine chaparral fire behavior. FIRETEC combines a sophisticated fine-scale model to simulate a three- dimensional wildfire, moving over a terrain-following finite volume grid, with the motions of the local atmosphere. It accounts for the microscopic details of a fire with macroscopic resolution by dividing quantities into mean and fluctuating parts and the resulting transport equations are solved by using a finite difference method. In …

Information Technology Implementation And Sustainment Model: Data Collection Instrument, Walter K. Yazzie Mar 2005

Information Technology Implementation And Sustainment Model: Data Collection Instrument, Walter K. Yazzie

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research was to develop a data collection instrument for an existing information technology implementation and sustainment model. In 2003, a unique system dynamics model was developed at the Air Force Institute of Technology to predict the behavior of information technology implementation and sustainment (Fonnesbeck, 2003). However, no empirical data was used during the model development. In order to collect the needed empirical data, this research develops a data collection instrument for the model. The instrument was sent to 60 Air Force community planners who are currently implementing a geographical information system (Air Force GeoBase) into their …

Advantageous Goes Ir Results For Ash Mapping At High Latitudes: Cleveland Eruptions 2001, Yingxin Gu, William I. Rose, David J. Schneider, Gregg J. S. Bluth, M. I. Watson

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

The February 2001 eruption of Cleveland Volcano, Alaska allowed for comparisons of volcanic ash detection using two-band thermal infrared (10–12 μm) remote sensing from MODIS, AVHRR, and GOES 10. Results show that high latitude GOES volcanic cloud sensing the range of about 50 to 65°N is significantly enhanced. For the Cleveland volcanic clouds the MODIS and AVHRR data have zenith angles 6–65 degrees and the GOES has zenith angles that are around 70 degrees. The enhancements are explained by distortion in the satellite view of the cloud's lateral extent because the satellite zenith angles result in a “side-looking” aspect and …

Introducing Pvspitch: A Pitch Tracking Opcode For Csound, Alan O'Cinneide Jan 2005

Introducing Pvspitch: A Pitch Tracking Opcode For Csound, Alan O'Cinneide

Conference papers

An accurate pitch tracker has many useful applications, whether for creating interactive electroacoustic compositions, music transcription, ethnomusicological research and numerous others. Designed for the Csound sound synthesis and signal processing language, PVSPITCH is an opcode that can be utilised for such purposes. The opcode performs a mathemathical analysis upon Csound's phase vocoder data streams and from this examination, ascertains what it determines to be the signal's pitch. The algorithm handles well many types of signals, including those missing various harmonics, even a fundamental, and also signals with inharmonic partials. The only signal restriction are that it be single voiced, strongly …

Comparison Of Signal Reconstruction Methods For The Azimuth Discrimination And Resynthesis Algorithm, Dan Barry, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle Jan 2005

Comparison Of Signal Reconstruction Methods For The Azimuth Discrimination And Resynthesis Algorithm, Dan Barry, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

The Azimuth Discrimination and Resynthesis algorithm (ADRess) has been shown to produce high quality sound source separation results for intensity panned stereo recordings. There are however, artifacts such as phasiness which become apparent in the separated signals under certain conditions. This is largely due to the fact that only the magnitude spectra for the separated sources are estimated. Each source is then resynthesised using the phase information obtained from the original mixture. This paper describes the nature and origin of the associated artifacts and proposes alternative techniques for resynthesising the separated signals. A comparison of each technque is then presented.

Onset Detection Using Comb Filters, Mikel Gainza, Bob Lawlor, Eugene Coyle Jan 2005

Onset Detection Using Comb Filters, Mikel Gainza, Bob Lawlor, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

A technique for detecting note onsets using FIR comb filters which have different filter delays is presented. The proposed onset detector focuses on the inharmonic characteristics of the onset component and the energy increases of the signal. Both properties are combined by utilising FIR comb filters on a frame by frame basis in order to obtain an onset detection functions, which is suitable for detecting slow onsets. The proposed approach improves upon existing methods in terms of the percentage of correct detections in signal processing.

Drum Source Separation Using Percussive Feature Detection And Spectral Modulation, Dan Barry, Derry Fitzgerald, Eugene Coyle, Robert Lawlor Jan 2005

Drum Source Separation Using Percussive Feature Detection And Spectral Modulation, Dan Barry, Derry Fitzgerald, Eugene Coyle, Robert Lawlor

Conference papers

This papers presents a method for the separation and resynthesis of drum sources from single channel polyphonic mixtures. The frequency domain technique involves identifying the presence of a drum using a novel percussive feature detection function, after which the short-time magniture spectrum is estimated and scaled according to an estimated time-amplitude function derived from the percussive measure. In addition to producing high quality separation results, the method described is also a useful pre-process for drum transcription techniques such as Prior Subspace Analysis in the presence of pitched instruments.

Audio Time-Scale Modification Using A Hybrid Time-Frequency Domain Approach, David Dorran, Eugene Coyle, Robert Lawlor Jan 2005

Audio Time-Scale Modification Using A Hybrid Time-Frequency Domain Approach, David Dorran, Eugene Coyle, Robert Lawlor

Conference papers

Frequency-domain approaches to audio time-scale modification introduce a reverberant artefact into the time-scaled output due to a loss in phase coherence between subband components. Whilst techniques have been developed which reduce the presence of this artifact, it remains a source of difficulty. A method of time-scaling is presented that reduces the presence of the reverberation by taking advantage of some flexibility that exists in the choice of phase required so as to maintain horizontal phase coherence along frequency-domain subband components. The approach makes use of appealing aspects of existing time-domain and frequency-domain time-scaling techniques.

Development Of A Computer-Based Violin Teaching Aid: Vitool, Jane Charles, Derry Fitzgerald, Eugene Coyle Jan 2005

Development Of A Computer-Based Violin Teaching Aid: Vitool, Jane Charles, Derry Fitzgerald, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

This paper considers the development of a violin teaching aid, called ViTool, which is based on violin pedagogy, sound analysis, and comparison of beginner and good player recordings. It is a computer based teaching aid and will ultimately consist of at least four task dependent tools. Typical beginner faults have been identified and features, that best describe them for classification purposes, are considered. The ViTool is not intended as a replacement or electronic teacher, but as a teaching aid. Presently, it seems that no such violin learning aid or tool exists and an opportunity exists for the development of such …
