A Case Study Of The Crashoverride Malware, Its Effects And Possible Countermeasures, Samuel Rector
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
CRASHOVERRIDE is a modular malware tailor-made for electric grid Industrial Control System (ICS) equipment and was deployed by a group named ELECTRUM in a Ukrainian substation. The malware would launch a protocol exploit to flip breakers and would then wipe the system of ICS files. Finally, it would execute a Denial Of Service (DOS) attack on protective relays. In effect, months of damage and thousands out of power. However, due to oversights the malware only caused a brief power outage. Though the implications of the malware are cause for researching and implementing countermeasures against others to come. The CISA recommends …
Interaction In Games: Custom Driving Controller, Christian Crank
Interaction In Games: Custom Driving Controller, Christian Crank
Symposium of Student Scholars
The problem I am trying to solve pertains to the high entry costs and the requirements to fully enjoy driving games. Driving games always sound like a fun experience, but without the right controller the game feels lackluster, uncomfortable, and not quite immersive. The problem is, if someone wants a gaming experience that makes the game feel natural and sensory, they may need to drop hundreds to thousands of dollars. Furthermore, they don’t even know if the expensive equipment will provide them with the experience they want. These expensive controllers are set up in a way to be universal and …

Actively Guided Cansats For Assisting Localization And Mapping In Unstructured And Unknown Environments, Cary Chun, M. Hassan Tanveer
Symposium of Student Scholars
When navigating in unknown and unstructured environments, Unmanned Arial Vehicles (UAVs) can struggle when attempting to preform Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) operations. Particularly challenging circumstance arise when an UAV may need to land or otherwise navigate through treacherous environments. As the primary UAV may be too large and unwieldly to safely investigate in these types of situations, this research effort proposes the use of actively guided CanSats for assisting in localization and mapping of unstructured environments. A complex UAV could carry multiple of these SLAM capable CanSats, and when additional mapping and localization capabilities where required, the CanSat would …

Ai Based Optimization Of Odometry Performance On Mobile Robots, Sunny Leveson Jones, Charles Koduru
Symposium of Student Scholars
Robots have become a large part of the modern world and have been used to navigate through complex environments, with various optimal speeds and pathing requirements. To improve this, we have developed an AI-based predictive pathing optimizer that takes in data regarding the requested route and implements optimal speeds. The algorithm will compare time lost to the time gained by moving at a higher velocity. This has been developed by implementing continual circular patterns onto a mobile robot, which allows for rapid analysis of both the accuracy and the speed of the cycle. This optimization is proposed to increase the …

Astronaut Or Astronot?, David A. Gusis
Ideas: Exhibit Catalog for the Honors College Visiting Scholars Series
As space becomes more and more accessible to the general population, the terminology we used in the past to describe those who trained endlessly to become the pioneers of a new frontier is beginning to lose its meaning. Astronauts like Colonel Richard Covey have earned their title and to bestow it on others who haven't gone through the same training or have paid to visit space as a tourist is wrong. My hope is to provide the necessary background information about what it means to be an Astronaut and provoke thought about preserving the term and creating new terminology for …

Studies Of Oval Tube And Fin Heat Exchangers, Phillip Nielsen
Studies Of Oval Tube And Fin Heat Exchangers, Phillip Nielsen
Discovery Day - Prescott
Heating Ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) is a system which changes the temperature of the surroundings for the purposes of cooling or heating. This system requires energy to maintain a temperature difference from the outside temperature. This is important since minimized power is one of the requirements for the system to achieve a better efficiency. Optimizing the flow over the evaporator coils is one way to increase the cooling efficiency. This will reduce the power required to have a sustainable system. Optimizing the flow to increase the energy transfer between the fins and the incoming air could result in a greater …

Use Of Penetrating Asphalt Emulsions To Address High-Void Pavement Areas, Andrew Eicher, Curt Higginbotham
Use Of Penetrating Asphalt Emulsions To Address High-Void Pavement Areas, Andrew Eicher, Curt Higginbotham
Purdue Road School
Longitudinal joints are high in air voids due to compaction limitations. Lowering the void content of these areas improves the durability of the pavement. Project data indicate that rapid penetrating emulsion (RPE) fills the voids beneath the surface of the pavement, reducing air and water intrusion while maintaining surface texture, whereas traditional emulsions seal the surface only. Lab tests have been developed to quantify the penetrating ability of an emulsion and resistance to water exposure. Join us for a discussion.

A major problem facing Computer Science faculty members at Cedarville University is grading student assignments. Specifically, grading programming assignments can be a repetitive, time-consuming process which makes it prime for automation. Professors need a web application that takes student code, compiles it, and compares the output to what the professors provides as correct. Gradel, a senior design project, allows students to submit their code online and receive instant feedback based on professor-designed test cases. Furthermore, professors need to be able to keep track of what grades students earn on their projects, which is functionality Gradel provides. In addition to allowing …

I noticed that the workers had the same itinerary when emptying trashcans, meanwhile trashcans needed urgently to be emptied. Traditionally, ETSU maintenance operate on daily routes to pick trash on designated time, regardless the level of the containers. This leads to overflown trashcan in busy areas or during rush hours in certain areas. This overflown trashcan result in an unclean environment for the community and an unpleasant look of our beautiful campus. The time, resources and labor invested in collecting the trash could be saved. Therefore, I decided to use the Internet of Things (IoT) to create a device that …

Controlled Heading Automation Device, Robert Coulson
Controlled Heading Automation Device, Robert Coulson
2017 Academic High Altitude Conference
One of the most significant limitations of weather balloon-based data collection is that instruments and payloads cannot depend on particular orientations or predictable rotation. Several investigators have used payload heading control devices to overcome this limitation in order to collect directional data and record motion controlled video footage. The work described in this presentation builds on the Controlled Heading Automation Device (CHAD) developed by Kruger et al. (2016) and was carried out at DePaul University in summer 2017 as an undergraduate research project. Our goal was to record stable video of the shadow of the moon on Earth’s surface during …

Balancing The Navigational Safety, Efficiency & Financial Aspects Of Oreis, Raza Ali Mehdi
MARENER 2017
The increasing number and sizes of offshore renewable energy installations (OREIs), combined with the ambitious plans for future developments in the sector, portray a bleak outlook for ‘traditional’ maritime and marine players: if the current plans for OREIs are realized, sea-space will become increasingly restricted for activities such as shipping.
Sustained growth of both OREIs and shipping may thus lead to situations where certain risk control options (RCOs) need to be adapted in order to maintain safety – despite the fact that such measures themselves may be counter-productive in terms of energy efficiency or financial sustainability. This leads to the …

Optimization Of A High-Speed X-Ray Imaging System For Studying Sprays, Lane E. Schultz, Mikhail N. Slipchenko, Terrence R. Meyer, Wilbert C. Slowman
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Spray-based liquid atomization and liquid mixing is critical for development of efficient combustors and drug delivery systems as well as multiple coating-related applications. While optical methods allow characterization of low density regions of sprays, the scattering of optical photons hinders the characterization of a dense core. Unlike optical photons, higher-energy X-ray photons have the capability to penetrate and image the core structure of sprays. Here we characterized temporal and spatial resolution of an X-Ray imaging system based on a commercially available tube source with an anode size of 0.6 mm. For high-speed imaging, a phosphor screen in combination with a …
