This is the first US Army manual on technical intelligence. The concept of technical intelligence developed during World War II. Technical intelligence doctrine was formalized by a series of army training circulars and other directives. Toward the end of WWII a new army Field Manual 30-15, Examination of Enemy Personnel, Repatriates, Civilians, Documents, and Materiel (June 1954) was issued, but that manual did not reflect the World War II technical intelligence experience or actual army practices. That manual was superceded by Field Manual 30-15, Examination of Personnel and Documents, 27 September 1951 and by this manual.

It was the purpose of this study to construct a universal mount, to construct a protective lead shield, to operate the instrument, and to provide a pole figure using the transmission method of Schulz and Decker. There are at present several lengthy x-ray methods of determining the grain orientation of metals. These methods are mainly photographic. In order to provide a rapid means of obtaining the necessary information concerning the grain orientation of a metal, a universal mount was constructed.

Many mines in the Cardwell Mining District have been more or less steady producers of gold, silver, lead and zinc since 18SO. The area first came into prominence with the discovery of gold at the Mayflower Mine in 1896. Soon after the Mayflower discovery, many claims were located in the nearby Saint Paul Gulch area, northeast of Whitehall. This report is concerned primarily with the beneficiation of a low-grade complex lead-zinc ore. The depletion of high grade veins has caused the mineral engineer to seek deposits deeper in the earth's crust or to find lower grade deposits. All of the information on the various districts has come directly from published reports. The investigation was suggested by Mr. Forbes Robertson. The geographical extent of the deposits was confined to the western United States. Many of these deposits are of the disseminated porphyry type. The electrolyte used in the commercial production of electrolytic zinc from zinc sulphate solutions contains small amounts of impurities each of which has its own effects upon the process. Impurities such as antimony, cobalt, nickel, and iron tend to lower the current efficiency while other impurities such as chlorine, fluorine, and nitrates tend to increase the corrosion of the lead anodes and thereby increase the lead tenor of the zinc deposit.

It has long been recognized that electrolytic zinc cells are extremely sensitive to impurities. In fact, certain impurities present in amounts as low as 0.1 mg/1 cause a serious loss of current efficiency. If a metal is first cold-worked and then heated to a sufficient temperature for an adequate length of time, the hardening properties due to cold-working disappear, and the metal will return more or less to its original state. Upon examination of the microstructure, we find that new grains have replaced the old grains through what is called recrystallization. The final size of the recrystallized grains depends upon three important variables--the degree of cold-work or deformation, annealing temperature, and annealing time.

Montana has long been known to have very large resources of coal and oil, and undetermined amounts of oil shale. The reserves of coal and oil have been proven, in part, and have been produced commercially, but not much is known about the extent and apparent value of the oil shales. Under present .conditions, and according to standards set by the United States Bureau of Mines, the shales are not of commercial value. They are, however, a potentially valuable mineral resource, and portions of them will possibly be utilized, although not in the near future.
