Claremont Teachers College Alumni Association : 10th Anniversary, 1980-1990, Alumni Association
Claremont Teachers College Alumni Association : 10th Anniversary, 1980-1990, Alumni Association
Research outputs pre 2011
On the 9th June 1990, the Claremont Teachers College Alumni Association completed its first 10 years. From a fairly humble beginning the Association has continued to grow until it now has in excess of 250 members.
These first ten years have been most traumatic for the Claremont College. In 1982 the College lost its identity as a separate autonomous institution when it was amalgamated to become one of the campuses of the West Australian College of Advanced Education. In 1989 the campus closed its doors on its last teacher education graduates and ceased its role as a teacher education institution. …

The Federal Government And The Industrial Workers Of The World, 1917-1918: An Attempt To Crush A Labor Union, Michael Torrance Prahl
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) was founded in 1905 as an industrial union: an organization of working people based on where they worked rather than the type of work they performed. From the beginning, the IWW was militant in its rhetoric. The preamble to its constitution declared: "The working class and the employing class have nothing in common." The IWW also advocated direct action (e.g., strikes and sabotage) as the means by which to accomplish their goal of a complete take-over of the means of production by the working class. Both its rhetoric and its actions created a …

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
An examination of the legitimacy of attacks on lay assessments of environmental or other technological Risk. The case is made that rational policy requires an epistemology in which what we believe about Risk is bootstrapped onto how we should act concerning Risk.

Harmonious Compositions: Korolenko's Siberian Stories, Radha Balasubramanian
Harmonious Compositions: Korolenko's Siberian Stories, Radha Balasubramanian
Russian Language and Literature Papers
Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko (1853-1921) turned his personal experiences as a political prisoner in Siberia into short stories that champion the talents of Siberia's ordinary people. These stories of Siberia have been noted by critics for their techniques of composition. His contemporaries like A. P. Chekhov and V. M. Garshin praise his craftsmanship and skill to compose aesthetically appealing short stories. Leighton shows how Korolenko, in order to reveal and document facts about different human beings, utilizes various literary devices such as particularized narration (skaz), allegory, contrast, parallel, and lyrical description. According to him, each story is like an …
On Parasitic Discourse In Till Eulenspiegel: Can We Take It Seriously?, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy
On Parasitic Discourse In Till Eulenspiegel: Can We Take It Seriously?, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy
German Language and Literature Papers
The issue we are addressing here concerns how – or if -- we can take non-serious language seriously, or even legitimate it. Derrida wishes to consider marginal, parasitic, borderline cases, because they give him “insight into the general functioning of a textual system.” If we simply identify and banish the parasite, we will end up retracing the boundaries of convention; if we look at the parasite as part of a whole system, then our perspective goes beyond that of the insider. This has direct implications for how we interpret Till Eulenspiegel. We can retrace the banishments as they occur …

Group Selection And The Evolution Of Myxomatosis, Timothy Shanahan
Group Selection And The Evolution Of Myxomatosis, Timothy Shanahan
Philosophy Faculty Works
Before it is possible to asses the importance of "group selection" in nature, it is necessary to rigorously define this term. A definition of group selection is derived from a critical analysis of conceptions common in the biological literature. This definition is then used to clarify the debate over the mechanism responsible for the evolution of myxomatosis in Australia.
