Hannibal Travis

Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples requires states to provide an effective remedy to indigenous peoples deprived of their cultural, religious, or intellectual property (IP) without their free, prior and informed consent. The Declaration could prove to be important safeguard for the indigenous peoples of Iraq and Turkey, the victims for centuries of massacres, assaults on their religious and cultural sites, theft and deterioration of their lands and cultural objects, and forced assimilation. These peoples, among them the Armenians, Assyrians, Greeks, and Yezidis of Turkey and Turkish-occupied Cyprus, and the Armenians, Assyrians, Yezidis, and Mandaeans of ...

What Code-Mixed Dps Can Tell Us About Gender, Elena Valenzuela, Joyce Bruhn De Garavito, Ewelina Barski, Maria De Luna Villalón, Ana Faure, Yolanda Pangtay, Alma Ramírez Trujillo, Sonia Reis

Ewelina Barski, PhD

There has been a growing interest in the examination of the steady state of simultaneous bilinguals. An understanding of what leads to the possible weaknesses in the grammar of early bilinguals can contribute to our understanding of the possible causes of the apparent characteristic ‘failures’ in second language acquisition (Montrul 2008). Spanish has a gender feature for nouns (Carroll 1989) and gender agreement for determiners and adjectives. Problems with the acquisition of gender marking on the noun and/or with gender agreement are well-known in the L2 literature (Hawkins 1998; Fernández–Garcia 1999; Franceschina 2001; Bruhn de Garavito and White ...

Procuring Permission: The Case For Organ Transplant Tax Credits, Jurgen De Wispelaere, Lindsay Stirton Nov 2010

Procuring Permission: The Case For Organ Transplant Tax Credits, Jurgen De Wispelaere, Lindsay Stirton

Lindsay J Stirton Ph.D.

The conventional wisdom amongst the organ transplant community is roughly constituted by three important beliefs. First, there is a significant deficit in the overall supply of organs for transplant purposes. Second, this deficit would be substantially affected by an increase in the supply of cadaveric organs. Third, the dramatic impact of an increase in cadaveric organs for those waiting on the transplant lists, both in terms of their survival rates as well as their quality of life, makes finding policy mechanisms that effectively boost supply a key moral imperative. The transplant community is in much less agreement, however, about how ...

Managing A Creative Practice, Julie C. Barrett Dec 2009

Managing A Creative Practice, Julie C. Barrett

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Myths and assumptions about creativity often lead us to believe that creativity is innate. Researchers find though, that we develop creative skills like any other ability, through opportunity, encouragement and practice. They also believe that most people fail to reach their creative potential, not because of lack of ability, but lack of opportunity. In this paper, I studied how creativity functions (specifically in terms of my own painting practice) and how it can be applied more flexibly. Certain factors, such as access to strong mentors, freedom to experiment, and readily available resources, help potentially exceptional minds find the passion to ...

A December To Remember, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It has been a December to remember.

As the month comes to a close with a remarkable flurry of headline sports stories, its clear that this one month was not only one for the memory bank, but that it may have been the most fitting way to end a year that has certified the decade as the Naughty Naughties. What seemed like an awkward tag at the beginning of the new century has become a most appropriate signature phrase as this decade comes to its ignominious close.
