History Educator Scholarship

From 1997 to 2003, the Eastern Korinthia Archaeological Survey (EKAS) investigated a 350-km2 region east of the ancient city of Corinth, focusing primarily on the northern Corinthian plain. EKAS developed an interdisciplinary methodology that emphasizes novel applications of geological science, computer-based knowledge systems, and strategies for fieldwork and collaboration among experts. in this article, the research philosophies and methods are presented and their application illustrated with results from the survey. the historical development of one settlement, Kromna in the northern Corinthian plain, is examined in detail to demonstrate the interpretive potential of data collected by these methods.

Memory, Mythmaking, And Museums: Constructive Authenticity And The Primitive Blues Subject, Stephen A. King Jan 2006

Memory, Mythmaking, And Museums: Constructive Authenticity And The Primitive Blues Subject, Stephen A. King

Stephen A. King

This essay explores how museums, public memory, and authenticity intersect to privilege an understanding of the past. Reflecting White control over the promotion of blues music, the curators at the Delta Blues Museum, located in Clarksdale, Mississippi, employ two rhetorical strategies to satisfy the expectations of (White) tourists who share culturally specific memories of the blues. First, the museum's rhetorical depiction of blues artists reflects White fascination with the mythic image of the primitive blues subject. Second, the exhibit recreates an early 20th century Delta society to complement tourism goals to market the Mississippi Delta as America's last remaining “pure” …

The Other Side Of The Fence, Benjamin S. Jones Jan 2006

The Other Side Of The Fence, Benjamin S. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

I pull from what I see in my urban surroundings. There is always a sense of dread fused with optimism that prevails. Is it beautiful? Fragments of low-riders and tricked-out cars become symbols of desire and the glowing red lens of a stop light becomes a Cyclops poised to defend his garden. Candy-coated, blooming, dripping and seductively slick confronts you with the obvious warning: STOP! You could be next… …The grass really is greener on The Other Side of the Fence. At least until winter comes.

Typography Behind The Arabetic Calligraphy Veil, Saad D. Abulhab Jan 2006

Typography Behind The Arabetic Calligraphy Veil, Saad D. Abulhab

Publications and Research

In the change from scriptural writing systems to textual mechanical systems and most recently to digital, computer generated text, some languages and their typographic representations have suffered. One such language, along with its visible language representation, that has not made a smooth transition is Arabic. The author argues that misinterpreting language tradition prevents what he calls Arabetic typography from embracing an appropriate technological adaptation. Putting forth an evolutionary argument, he critiques the notion that calligraphic styles must prevail and that legibility and readability of Arabic characters is objective. He further states that the resulting typefaces when abandoning the so called …

Mccarthyism And Libraries: Intellectual Freedom Under Fire, 1947-1954, Stephen Francoeur Jan 2006

Mccarthyism And Libraries: Intellectual Freedom Under Fire, 1947-1954, Stephen Francoeur

Publications and Research

This essay will analyze how library organizations, such as the American Library Association, and individual librarians responded to the pressure placed on libraries during the McCarthy era to deal with alleged subversion. Although libraries have always been the target of censors, it was during the first decade of the Cold War that those Americans most fearful of Communist subversion swept up large numbers of their fellow citizens in a crusade to rid libraries of Communist influence. That effort by the self-proclaimed “loyal Americans” to save libraries put more than just library collections under the microscope. The librarians themselves were scrutinized …

Complicating The Poor Widow’S Gift: Exegesis On Mk. 12:41-44, Timothy Traynor Jan 2006

Complicating The Poor Widow’S Gift: Exegesis On Mk. 12:41-44, Timothy Traynor

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

The dominant understanding of the story of the widow’s offering was thought to be as praise and encouragement for generous giving for much of the history of its interpretation, but was completely reversed and called into question by A.G. Wright’s 1982 study. Attempts to reclaim the widow as a model for piety and methods of contemporary biblical scholarship have added significantly to the subsequent dialogue with Wright making the widow’s offering an interesting narrative reflection on the early Christian community and a lens to look at women’s contributions to the ancient church.

Race And Place: Social Space In The Production Of Human Kinds, Ronald Sundstrom Jan 2006

Race And Place: Social Space In The Production Of Human Kinds, Ronald Sundstrom

Philosophy

Recent discussions of human categories have suffered from an over emphasis on intention and language, and have not paid enough attention to the role of material conditions, and, specifically, of social space in the construction of human categories. The relationship between human categories and social spaces is vital, especially with the categories of class, race, and gender. This paper argues that social space is not merely the consequent of the division of the world into social categories; it is constitutive of social categories. To put it more bluntly, if who we are is bound up with place, then not only …

Torture And Legitimacy, Ronald Sundstrom Jan 2006

Torture And Legitimacy, Ronald Sundstrom

Philosophy

George W. Bush’s administration has undermined the legitimacy of the United States of America as a member of the international community through an astonishing array of unilateral policies that do not respect the interests and concerns of that community. On matters of serious concern to the peoples of the world, such as the global environment, human rights, nuclear weapons proliferation, terrorism, and, of course, war, the United States has pursued its foreign policy interests guided by “political realism” and a stubborn commitment to its narrowly interpreted national interests. It is not enough, however, to merely identify and condemn the legitimacy …
