Complex Female Agency, The “Final Girl” Trope, And The Subversion And Reaffirmation Of Patriarchy: The Cases Of Western & Mena Horror Films, Majdoulin Almwaka

Journal of International Women's Studies

This research explores gender representation in horror films through a detailed analysis of the archetype of the “final girl” to see whether she could be a source of power and agency for female audiences. Contemporary research has often disregarded the impact of horror films in shaping stereotypes. In recent years, feminist film theory studies of horror films focused predominantly on analyzing the dichotomy between masculinity and femininity while highlighting instances of women's victimization. This becomes a critical case to study as it will explore the film’s complex female character concerning a feminist role model with the connotations it brings to …

Amalgamation Of East And West In The Art Of Amrita Sher-Gil, Prachi Priyanka

Journal of International Women's Studies

An avant-garde aesthete and one of the pioneers of modern art in India, Amrita Sher-gil (1913 – 1941) was a remarkable combination of sensitivity and sensuousness. Her artworks show an array of influences that were sourced from her Indo-Hungarian origin, and her encounters with French and Italian discourses. An iconoclast at heart, she was a social rebel who lived life on her own terms. Some of her works include ‘Village Scene’, ‘In the Ladies Enclosure’, ‘Self-portrait as a Tahitian’, ‘Red Brick house’, ‘Hill Scene’ and the South Indian Trilogy, ‘Bride’s Toilet’, Brahmacharis’ and ‘South Indian Villagers Going to Market’. Her …

Reconsidering The Victorian Angel In The Light Of Butler’S Concept Of Performativity, Monia Chouari Jul 2022

Reconsidering The Victorian Angel In The Light Of Butler’S Concept Of Performativity, Monia Chouari

Journal of International Women's Studies

Amid the fast changes and repercussions of the French and Industrial Revolutions in the 19th century, women's critical status in the transitory period in Britain stimulated the Victorian elite, namely women novelists like Elizabeth Gaskell, to raise the complex issue of femininity and womanhood to establish femininity as an agency. Interrogating the predominant concept of a woman as an angel, this study sets forth to examine the mechanisms of the building-up of women characters wrestling with the Victorian ideal of the angel for a sweet home that has been established by leading figures and theorists of domestic ideology such …

Myth, Fiction And Politics In The Age Of Antiheroes: A Case Study Of Donald Trump, Igor Prusa, Matthew Brummer Jul 2022

Myth, Fiction And Politics In The Age Of Antiheroes: A Case Study Of Donald Trump, Igor Prusa, Matthew Brummer

Heroism Science

In this article, we demonstrate that the antihero archetype informs our understanding of Trump in important ways, including his rise to and fall from power. We introduce an analytical framework for analyzing Trump’s antiheroic traits based on his social positioning, individual motivation, and personal charisma. We argue that Trump is fascinating because he is powerful, amoral, and charismatic, and suggest that the American public was primed for Trumpism through a zeitgeist hospitable to antihero worship. That is, Trump’s dogged popularity with nearly half of the American public was foretold by decades of pop-cultural obsession with, and adulation for, the antihero.

Nuevomexicana/O Identity Affirmations Through Chicana And Chicano Muralism, Howard E. Griego Jul 2022

Nuevomexicana/O Identity Affirmations Through Chicana And Chicano Muralism, Howard E. Griego

Chicana and Chicano Studies ETDs

This research spotlights Nuevomexicana/o identity as expressed in murals produced by New Mexican artists during the Chicana and Chicano Mural Movement of the 1970s. Extant research focuses on Chicana/o murals in other regions mainly in California and Texas, and New Mexico has been understudied in the literature. This study analyzes murals and interviews with New Mexico artists to explore how these artists portrayed their identity and conveyed their social and political expression through their thematic content. A dialectical analysis was conducted using a mixed method approach. A statistical analysis determined the frequency and distribution of distinct themes. The findings showed …

Reading Contemporary French Literature, Warren Motte Jul 2022

Reading Contemporary French Literature, Warren Motte

Zea E-Books Collection

This book focuses upon a dozen French writers who have helped to set the terms for contemporary French literature and its horizon of possibility. Though they have pursued significantly different paths, each one of them is committed to the principle of literary innovation, to making French literature new. They work in full cognizance of literary history and of the tradition that they inherit, even as they reshape that tradition in each of their books. They invite their readers to take a critical stance with regard to those books, and to participate actively in the construction of literary meaning. Both bold …

Documentary Photography And Curatorial Practice In The United States, 1902-1967, Katie Hegebarth Jul 2022

Documentary Photography And Curatorial Practice In The United States, 1902-1967, Katie Hegebarth

Master of Arts in Art and Design Theses

Documentary photography has been a historically difficult medium to define. Is it art, or journalism or somewhere in between? Over time, the medium has undergone several redefinitions as photography became more accessible to the masses through technological advances, and its inclusion in museum spaces. By examining the history of photography, the elitist motivations of museums in the early twentieth century, and the curatorial practices of landmark photographic shows organized by Alfred Stieglitz of the Photo-Secessionist movement, Roy Stryker of the Farm Security Administration, and Beaumont Newhall, Edward Steichen, and John Szarkowski of the Department of Photography at MoMA, this paper …

A Theory Of Text Setting Contour: A Proposed Theory That Places Text At The Structural Foreground Of The Analysis Of Vocal Music, Grace K. Weaver Jul 2022

A Theory Of Text Setting Contour: A Proposed Theory That Places Text At The Structural Foreground Of The Analysis Of Vocal Music, Grace K. Weaver

Music ETDs

How can contour theory be used to analyze a composer’s setting of a poem? Can this approach provide insights that lead to an interpretation of the composer’s setting of the text? This study presents a new contour theory on text setting by examining two different settings of the same text. This theory examines one aspect of the music, the vocal line, and plots syllable’s locations in two dimensions of music: pitch space and duration. Using these data points, one can suggest an interpretation of the poem. Through the application of this theory to Fanny Hensel and Franz Schubert’s setting of …

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Link to Interactive Timeline Resource (ITR): https://sites.google.com/view/itr-internet-art/home

The purpose of this study was to first collect and summarize the history of internet art from its inception to current day and, second, to create an interactive timeline resource (ITR) designed for K-12 art application. Current approaches to internet art include recommendations that students engage with social media in the K-12 setting, yet gaps in the literature have neglected to address the actual history of internet art as a feature of a student’s K-12 art experiences. Initial research started from a preliminary hypothesis that highlighted the irony of students using the internet …
