"Concern For ... South Africa Must Not Impel Us To Commit Acts Of Economic Suicide", Michael Milendez
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
The early 1970s marked the gradual end of the silent era in the antiapartheid movements in South Africa. The Black Consciousness movement along with other internal anti-apartheid movements began to gain strength and a greater voice. At the same time, the U.S. government continued to ignore, for the most part, South African affairs. This changed with the Angola Conflict in 1975 and the heightening of internal strife of South Africa, which began with the Soweto Uprisings in 1976. The conflicting economic and strategic interests of the U.S. Government led to policies, which allowed apartheid to survive in South Africa throughout …

Persecution Of Catholic Leaders In The Ussr, Jenevra Owen
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
In the early 1900s Russian people sought for change in the government because they were not pleased with the capitalist system under the Tsar. The year 1917 saw the end of the Tsar's reign as he fell to the Bolshevik Party (a socialist group) during the Russian Revolution. This completely altered the face of the Russian government as it ushered in a new era for the Russian people. They had been longing for a transformation within the government, and the revolution served as the means to bring about that change. As a result, the Bolshevik Party was created to provide …

Explaining The Stigma: Emma Smith's Reputation Among Latter-Day Saints, 1860 To Present, Dallan Petersen
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
In 1874 Brigham Young declared that Emma Smith, the widow of Joseph Smith, would "be damned as sure as she is a living woman. " Few people have ever elicited enough controversy to be publicly condemn by an LDS Church President, but Emma Smith is among them. Today, Emma Smith is a controversial figure among Mormons, but the reason she became so is less well known. Since the 1980s, LOS books and magazines have claimed her reputation is a product of her refusal to follow her husband's church to Utah in 1846. However, there is no evidence that Emma's reputation …
Manchester And The Lit And Phil, Nik Vigil
Manchester And The Lit And Phil, Nik Vigil
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
In writing his extensive History, Directory, and Gazetteer of the County Palatine of Lancaster, Edward Baines wrote, "When the increase of wealth and population lead to the establishment of societies for the improvement of the mind and the extension of science, they produce their legitimate influence; of this nature is the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society." The Lit and Phil, as it was most commonly known, was established in 1781 as a society intended for the discussion of topics as diverse as experimental chemistry and the commercial arts. The Lit and Phil was unique in that it was begun …

A green flare shot up in the air, lighting the sky. A red flare shortly followed. As a suprised crowd looked up, "a hail of bullets" turned a pepaceful student protest into a massacre at Tlatelolco.

"Dish For An Epicure": Spanish Perceptions Of Indigenous Food In Mexico And Central America, 1517-1577, Timothy Boyer
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
Upon Arrival in Veracruz, Mexico in 1520, the conquistadors were exposed to the sights, sounds, and tastes of the New World. In Cuba they had subsisted on a mostly European diet, but in Mexico they would have to learn to make do with indigenous foods. Their leader, Hernan Cortes, ordered the ships burned to prevent deserters, destroying any hope they had of receiving supplies of European foods during their conquest of what would later become known as Nueva Espana. This left them highly dependent on either their own ability to properly identify food sources or, as was usually the case, …

Exploring Fragmentation In Ali Smith’S Autumn, Emily Koberlein
Exploring Fragmentation In Ali Smith’S Autumn, Emily Koberlein
Student Research Submissions
This paper seeks to explore the effect of fragmentation in Ali Smith’s Autumn. Through examination of academic literature that compares traditional fragmentation utilized in modernist literature to the effects of fragmentation and its reappearance in contemporary literature, this essay seeks to examine the effects, implications, and practice of using fragmentation in contemporary work. As seen in Autumn, the fragmented nature of contemporary works functions as a method of consistency rather than to create a disconnect between the author and their text. The use of fragmentation is seen in this text’s structure, the relationship of its main characters, and the disjointed …
Finding Focus: Authentic Inquiry And Composition In The Third Space, Noah Brewer
Finding Focus: Authentic Inquiry And Composition In The Third Space, Noah Brewer
Dissertations
This research seeks to better understand the attitudes and dispositions of advanced-level English Language Arts students toward the activities of academic research and writing, and to explore the ways that critical pedagogies focused on authentic inquiry and composition interact with these attitudes. The project draws upon research in student motivation, sociocultural definitions of literacy, and theories of hybrid identity in order to discover the potential impact of engaging students in critical reflection on their own meaning-making practices, and of curricular and pedagogical choices aimed at making the lessons of the classroom more relevant to the demands of real-world literacy practices …
The Value Of Mentorship For Black Ballerinas, Anna Dunn
The Value Of Mentorship For Black Ballerinas, Anna Dunn
Dissertations
Much research has been done in other fields about the relationship of gender and race to the success of mentors to increase student confidence to pursue additional training or a career in certain fields. The purpose of this study was to articulate formally the importance of the relationship between Black ballet students and a mentor who has lived a similar life experience, having navigated the ballet industry as a Black ballerina. This research sought to answer the questions of what value do Black ballet students perceive in having a Black ballerina as a mentor and how white ballet teachers can …
Companionship, Romance, And Self-Perception With Conversational Chatbots, Jonathan Windsor
Companionship, Romance, And Self-Perception With Conversational Chatbots, Jonathan Windsor
Student Research Submissions
Serving as a metaphorical gateway transcending the communicative barriers of physical relationships in interpersonal dialogues, artificial imators of human behavior and speech, also known as conversational chatbots; a simulation of human knowledge and existence in a bi-directional conversation, functions as a rhetor of expression. Spanning from contexts of professional to romantic, I serve to dissect and critically analyze the nuances of human-machine relationships based on pre-established literature, inviting ethical considerations and biases in their design and marketing. Corporate influences spark pre-established servitude-esque relationships with conversational agents. Professional applications, both task-oriented and emotionally based alike, paint a mixed picture of …
Anthropaean Storytelling, Community, And The Ripples Of The Climate Crisis, Jonathan Summers
Anthropaean Storytelling, Community, And The Ripples Of The Climate Crisis, Jonathan Summers
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
The climate crisis has grown into a dangerous global threat, pushing our planet to the point of ecological no return. We face the certainty of increasingly destructive climate disasters and social upheaval, threatening our societal and biological survival. The next few years will prove critical to the future welfare of our species and our planet. However, we are not without our defenses. Through the lens of fictional short stories, this capstone concentrates on community and storytelling, two deeply human behaviors that could be two of our greatest tools in the struggle against climate change. Human beings are social creatures at …
Mapping Deaf America: Visualizing American Deaf Sociality Through Geographic Information Systems, Emily Nover
Mapping Deaf America: Visualizing American Deaf Sociality Through Geographic Information Systems, Emily Nover
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
In the study of the US deaf community, a noticeable gap is evident in the absence of an accessible map that presents current data about the community. This project takes an American perspective, embracing the term “Deaf America” as a framework that highlights the unique social network, geographic nuances, and sensory experiences of the deaf community in the United States. These elements are crucial to understanding the extensive network of the deaf community in the US. However, there is a lack of quality visual representations of these elements. This project seeks to bridge this gap by collecting data and leveraging …
Beyond The Surface: Understanding The “Blurred Lines” Of Sexual Dynamics And Consent In Trinity College's Hookup Scene, Zoe Kon
Senior Theses and Projects
This thesis explores the complex interplay of sexual behaviors, consent, and campus culture at Trinity College through qualitative ethnographic research. Delving into the nuances of hookup culture, a prevalent social phenomenon, the research examines how it often blurs the boundaries between consensual and non-consensual sexual interactions. Thirty in-depth interviews with Trinity College students reveal the intricate dynamics of consent communication and understanding within this context. The findings highlight significant gaps in students' communication about boundaries and consent, driven by the pressures of social capital and the normalization of alcohol-fueled encounters. The theme of blurred lines emerges as a central issue, …
