Evaluation Of Adult Education In Vocational Agriculture During 1952-53, Louis C. Taylor Aug 1954

Evaluation Of Adult Education In Vocational Agriculture During 1952-53, Louis C. Taylor

Masters Theses

General Introduction

The Smith-Hughes Act that originally introduced vocational agriculture in 1917 contains the statement "that the controlling purpose of such education shall be to fit for useful employment; that such education shall be of less than college grade be designated to meet the needs of persons ever fourteen years of age have entered upon or who are preparing to enter upon the work the fans or of the farm home." This provides the basis for acceptance by any teachers of vocational agriculture that teaching adults is part of their jobs.

In Tennessee, interest has increased greatly in recent years …

The Effect Of Steriod Hormones On The Rate Of Gain And Feed Utilization In Lambs, Calvin Lawrence Cannon Aug 1954

The Effect Of Steriod Hormones On The Rate Of Gain And Feed Utilization In Lambs, Calvin Lawrence Cannon

Masters Theses

In Tennessee, approximately 80 per cent of the income from sheep comes from the sale of fat spring lambs. These lambs are usually marketed during the period from April through June at a weight of 80 to 100 pounds. Light weight and/or under-finished lambs usually sell at marked discount. During the latter part of the season a considerable number of such lambs are marketed. During the 1953 marketing season, approximately 16 per cent of 17,350 lambs, sold through organized lamb pools in the state, graded utility or lower. The prime, choice and good lambs returned an average of $13.21, $10.88 …

Quality And Price Of Fresh Market Strawberries In West Tennessee, A. W. Woodard Aug 1954

Quality And Price Of Fresh Market Strawberries In West Tennessee, A. W. Woodard

Masters Theses

Tennessee strawberry producers have received an average of about three and one-half million dollars annually from strawberry sales for the past ten years. While this amount is less than one percent of the state's total crop value, strawberries rank eighth as a source of crop income. In addition to being the most widely grown truck crop, they have been in most years the most valuable crop.

Unlike most other crops, the characteristics of the strawberry make the marketing process extremely difficult. The product grade or quality as established on the farm never improves during the product's journey to the consumer. …

The Effect Of Type And Weight On The Yield Of Primal And Miscellaneous Pork Cuts, Don Allison Bowman Aug 1954

The Effect Of Type And Weight On The Yield Of Primal And Miscellaneous Pork Cuts, Don Allison Bowman

Masters Theses

Hogs are marketed with less emphasis on carcass value than any other class of livestock. In the past, average weight has largely determined market grade in buying and selling of laughter hogs. Dressing percentage combined with weight has largely determined the value of hogs the paker buyer. Average weight and dressing percentage do not give adequate consideration to the carcass difference among market hogs. The packer is becoming more aware of this situation. On many markets an honest attempt is being made to revamp and improve hog buying techniques.

The Standardisation and Grading Division of the Agricultural Marketing Service of …

Investigation Of The Poisoning Of Cattle Consuming Fescue Grass, Denis Cecil De Loach Aug 1954

Investigation Of The Poisoning Of Cattle Consuming Fescue Grass, Denis Cecil De Loach

Masters Theses

Experimental results and field observations in the United States, New Zealand, and Australia indicate that fescue contains a toxic agent that is detrimental to cattle of both beef and dairy breeds.

Tall fescue grass (Festuca arundinacea) has been recommended and used extensively as permanent pasture in Tennessee, Kentucky, and other states for the past several years. The acreage of fescue grass, in spite of the possible detrimental effects, is still increasing.

Observations at the Middle Tennessee Experiment Station, at Alcoa, and possibly at Calderwood, as well as correspondence with other stations, indicate that the disease now known as fescue poisoning …

A Study Of Plant Distribution Patterns At A Mid-Altitude Location In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Everette H. Cooley Aug 1954

A Study Of Plant Distribution Patterns At A Mid-Altitude Location In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Everette H. Cooley

Masters Theses

Introduction: Travelers in the Great Smoky Mountains are often impressed by the striking contrasts between the evergreen and deciduous vegetation types exposed to view along the mountain slopes. In the springtime one can look across the valley formed by the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River, toward the north-facing slopes of Sugarland Mountain, and see the intricate mosaic pattern of the vegetation as the new leaves of the deciduous trees unfold, spreading out in a wide fan in the lower coves and extending, tongue fashion, up the mountain slopes into the high coves between lead ridges. These deciduous forest …

Prediction Accuracy Evaluation Of Five Soil Test Methods, William D. Bishop Jun 1954

Prediction Accuracy Evaluation Of Five Soil Test Methods, William D. Bishop

Masters Theses

How much fertilizer should farmers use to produce economical crop yields? Crop response to fertilization is one of the important factors to be considered in arriving at the answer. Farmers look to agricultural scientists to supply this information. The expense and the time of running field experiments make it desirable to employ other less expensive and less time-consuming methods for predicting crop response to fertilizer applications. To supplement field fertilizer experiments, scientists have developed rapid chemical tests for the purpose of supplying farmers needed information about the fertility levels of their soils. The chemical tests are used to predict crop …

The Effects Of Different Levels Of Flourine Intake On Digestibility And Mineral Balance In Beef Cows, George Douglas Plumlee Jun 1954

The Effects Of Different Levels Of Flourine Intake On Digestibility And Mineral Balance In Beef Cows, George Douglas Plumlee

Masters Theses

Fluorine as a factor in livestock feeding has received much attention. More recent problems in fluorine toxicity have arisen in the vicinity of plants processing phosphite fertilizer and aluminum. In these areas fluorine may be emitted from the processing operation and settle on vegetation. Farm animals consuming vegetation containing large amounts of fluorine may develop fluorosis. When these experiments were first being designed to study the effects of controlled fluoride feeding, the problem arose as to the source and form fluoride to be used. Raw rock phosphate, calcium fluoride, cryolite, and sodium fluoride are some of the compounds that have been …

Effect Of Potassium Fertilization On Yield, Lodging, And Mineral Composition Of Corn Inbreds And Single Crosses, Wilburn Curtis Brummitt Jun 1954

Effect Of Potassium Fertilization On Yield, Lodging, And Mineral Composition Of Corn Inbreds And Single Crosses, Wilburn Curtis Brummitt

Masters Theses

This study was desired to determine if different single crosses and inbreds of corn, Zea mays, reacted differently to potassium fertilization as related to yield, degree of lodging, and cation content of their loaf tissue.

One plant function of potassium has been related to carbohydrate synthesis, another to translocation. Both processes contribute to yield and to resistance to lodging.

Plants differ in total potassium requirements and in ability to obtain this potassium from the soil. Some of these differences between plants seem to be related to total potassium requirements of the species, feeding power of the plant roots, and the …

Postwar changes in the structure and practices of Thailand Agriculture have been significant. The financial requirement of the farmers has expanded rapidly in recent years, much like the increases experienced in other sectors of the national economy. Farmers are in need of added capital to clear land, improve efficiency, mechanize and make other improvements in order to increase production and compete more effectively in fulfilling their role in the economy.

It is believed Thai farmers are lacking in available credit institutions to provide needed capital funds. The cooperative credit association is one of the favorite sources that …

Studies Of Mild Lipase, Hugh Oliver Jaynes Jun 1954

Studies Of Mild Lipase, Hugh Oliver Jaynes

Masters Theses

The processes involved in Cheddar cheese ripening are a mystery into which light is slowly being cast. It is generally accepted that raw milk cheese is ripened by enzymes native to the cheese milk and by microorganisms accidentally or purposely incorporated into the cheese. Pasteurization of milk for cheesemaking is a practice coming into wide acceptance and certainly has its merits. But the heat treatment of pasteurization inactivates many desirable microorganisms and destroys milk enzymes which could be important in cheese ripening. Pasteurized milk cheese could be made equal to the finest raw milk cheese if the agents responsible for …

4. What persons are involved in the planning of the …

Vegetation Of The Grassy Balds Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Vernon Collis Gilbert Jun 1954

Vegetation Of The Grassy Balds Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Vernon Collis Gilbert

Masters Theses

On the tops of many mountains in the Southern Appalachians are areas which are essentially treeless and which are called "balds." These balds are of two general types, "heath balds" and "grassy balds." The heath balds are largely made up of woody ericaceous species, while the grassy balds are dominated by herbaceous species. This study is concerned with the grassy balds.

The problem of the origin of these grassy balds has long been of interest, and a great deal has been written about the general topic. In this thesis a review is made of the views and theories that have …

A Study Of Livestock Dealers In Tennessee, Erice H. Mcdonald Mar 1954

A Study Of Livestock Dealers In Tennessee, Erice H. Mcdonald

Masters Theses

Significant changes have occurred in agricultural production inTennessee during the last two decades. The history of this period reveals that among the more important changes have been a decreasing interest In row-crop farming and greater interest and emphasis on a grassland-livestock economy. Also, during this time, farmers, livestock marketing agencies, and processors have become more interested in a better marketing system for livestock.

Prior to the 1930’s, livestock production on most Tennessee farms was a major enterprise with emphasis on production for home use. Sales were mainly surpluses above home needs and were made with little attention to market considerations. …

Organization And Operation Of Advisory Councils For Vocational Agriculture, Henry Chapman Colston Mar 1954

Organization And Operation Of Advisory Councils For Vocational Agriculture, Henry Chapman Colston

Masters Theses

Advisory councils have been used In and for vocational agriculture in an advisory capacity since its beginning. The Use of advisory councils in agricultural education preceded the passage of the Smith-Hughes Act for Vocational Agriculture. As early as 1911¹ it was mandatory in Massachusetts to have advisory councils for local departments of agriculture.

Hamlin² stated that there were 117 advisory councils and committees in eighty schools having advisory groups in 1949. In New York³ it is the duty of the board of education to appoint an advisory board. In Tennessee, advisory council organization is being encouraged by the State Department …

Response Of Corn To Zinc Fertilization, James W. Blanton Mar 1954

Response Of Corn To Zinc Fertilization, James W. Blanton

Masters Theses

Reports of a chlorotic condition on corn believed to be magnesium deficiency were received from Middle Tennessee in the summers of 1948 and 1949. Magnesium treatment failed to correct the trouble. Zinc deficiency was then suspected to be the cause of this chlorosis. Deficiencies attributed to zinc in corn result in a chlorosis of the plant, slow growth and greatly reduced yields. Within a few days after emergence of the corn seedlings, yellow to white striping appears between the veins of the plant leaves. As growth continues older leaves develop a purplish color along their margins and tips. The yellow …

An Evaluation Of The Productivity Of Some Important Soil Types In The Central Basin Of Tennessee, Alonzo Byron Harmon Dec 1953

An Evaluation Of The Productivity Of Some Important Soil Types In The Central Basin Of Tennessee, Alonzo Byron Harmon

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop reliable crop-yield indexes for some of the major soil types that occur in the Central Basin of Tennessee. The yield indexes developed are based on data from plot tests in which the soil types and the management levels have been defined. Many of the tests have been conducted over a considerable number of years during which a range in climatic conditions has been experienced. Thus the crop-yield indexes reported in this study should represent the average crop yields that may be expected from the use of specified soil management practices on the …

Results Of Different Germination Tests On Seed Corn Lots Of Various Ages, Lewis Harper Dickson Dec 1953

Results Of Different Germination Tests On Seed Corn Lots Of Various Ages, Lewis Harper Dickson

Masters Theses

Stand is important wherever corn is grown, but it is often reduced when cool wet weather follows planting. To the hybrid seed corn producer, the matter of obtaining a stand is doubly important because of the high initial cost of seed stocks and because failure of one parent necessitates the replanting of the other parent also, in Tennessee the single cross T61 x T13 Is used as the seed parent In three commercial hybrids. Farmers frequently report difficulty In obtaining stands of this single cross, especially if cool weather follows planting, even though recent laboratory examination tests run as high …

Certain Physiological And Pathological Effects Of Feeding Various Levels Of Fluorine And Alleviators To Lambs, J. M. Griffith Dec 1953

Certain Physiological And Pathological Effects Of Feeding Various Levels Of Fluorine And Alleviators To Lambs, J. M. Griffith

Masters Theses

The fluorine problem in livestock feeding is one of increasing importance. Fluorosis has been commonly defined as “chronic poisoning with fluorine” (American Illustrated Medical Dictionary). To some, the word may mean the condition that results when the abnormal ingestion of fluorine is sufficient to harm the animal (i.e., as the term is defined medically). To others, the word may mean the condition resulting from any ingestion of fluorine above normal levels.

Fluorosis in livestock has been encountered in several ways, one of which is the use of mineral supplements containing fluorine. These minerals are the different varieties of phosphate rock …

An Excess Farm Population And The Loss Of Farm Wealth, Peter Paul Dorner Dec 1953

An Excess Farm Population And The Loss Of Farm Wealth, Peter Paul Dorner

Masters Theses

Every problem chosen for analysis by an individual working within the limits set by a particular discipline has certain facets which transcend the limits set by a particular discipline has certain facets which transcend the limits of this discipline regardless of the generality by which this discipline is defined. These aspects of the problem are either ignored as irrelevant, not recognized at all, or they may be recognised but not analyzed within the framework of a particular study. But the fact that these other aspects do exist should not deter one from analyzing one aspect of the problem from a …

The Rural Church And Organized Community Activity; A Study Of Church-Community Relations In Two East Tennessee Communities, Beryl B. Maurer

Masters Theses

“The Rural Church and Organized Community Activity," a study of church-community relations in two East Tennessee communities, originated out of another study. The University of Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station, Agricultural Extension Service, and the Tennessee Valley Authority were cooperating in a study of six select East Tennessee communities. The writer was asked to assist the rural sociologist of the Experiment Station in conducting the study. It was further suggested that this was a good opportunity to gain field research experience and first-hand acquaintance with the East Tennessee area. The opportunity was accepted on the basis that permission would be granted …

The Characteristic Roots Of Certain Real Symmetric Matrices, Joseph Frederick Elliott Aug 1953

The Characteristic Roots Of Certain Real Symmetric Matrices, Joseph Frederick Elliott

Masters Theses

The main purpose of this thesis is to collect and coordinate some known results in the study of characteristic roots of certain real symmetric matrices. Specifically, most of the matrices considered have their elements aij = 0 except for I i - J I < 1 and are known as Jacobi matrices. The thesis fills in the details of two papers by D. E. Rutherford [12; 13]1 , with some translation of his results for determinants to the problem of finding characteristic roots of matrices. Some of the results obtained are briefly discussed relative to certain theorems on bounds for characteristic roots.

The first part of the paper is an attempt to show some of the physical sources of the problem …

A Study Of The Effects Of Testosterone Cyclopentylpropionate On The Semen Characteristics And The Sexual Behavior Of Beef Bulls, Eidris V. Long Aug 1953

A Study Of The Effects Of Testosterone Cyclopentylpropionate On The Semen Characteristics And The Sexual Behavior Of Beef Bulls, Eidris V. Long

Masters Theses

During recent years much attention has been given to studies of lowered fertility in cows; however, relatively little study has been given to the problem of lowered fertility in bulls. Some bulls show lowered fertility due to low sperm concentration, poor motility, or various other seminal defects. Occasionally bulls are observed which produce semen of high quality, but are so lacking in sexual drive that they are of little value in a breeding program.

The role of the endocrine system in the development and maintenance of fertility has long been recognized. The gonado-tropic hormones from the anterior pituitary governs the …

The Effect Of Various Grades And Lengths Of Pork Carcasses Together With Sex On The Yield Of Sliced Bacon, Charles E. Riley Aug 1953

The Effect Of Various Grades And Lengths Of Pork Carcasses Together With Sex On The Yield Of Sliced Bacon, Charles E. Riley

Masters Theses

Hogs are probably marketed with less emphasis on carcass value than any other class of livestock. In the past, average weight largely has determined market grade in buying and selling of slaughter hogs. Dressing percentage combined with weight has determined the value of hogs to the packer buyer. Average weight and dressing percentage do not give adequate consideration to the differences among market hogs that affect the value of the pork products obtained.

The Production and Marketing Administration of the United States Department of Agriculture has recently released standards for grading hogs. These standards for grading slaughter hogs have been …
