The primary mechanism for overcoming faults in modern storage systems is to introduce redundancy in the form of replication and error correcting codes. The costs of such redundancy in hardware, system availability and overall complexity can be substantial, depending on the number and pattern of faults that are handled. This dissertation describes and analyzes, via simulation, a system that seeks to use disk failure avoidance to reduce the need for costly redundancy by using adaptive heuristics that anticipate such failures. Invasive species often displace ecologically-similar native species, but the extent to which invading and displaced species function similarly in the food web processes of invaded communities is largely unknown. I investigated whether populations and individuals of an invasive Anolis lizard (the brown anole, Anolis sagrei) and the native congener it displaces in Florida (the green anole, Anolis carolinensis) are functionally equivalent in the food webs of open and structurally-simple habitats. In a system of invaded and uninvaded dredge-spoils islands, I found that both arthropod communities and winter bird communities covaried with brown anole abundance (and therefore the identity …

My dissertation investigates Anglo-Saxon translation and interpretation during the reign of King Alfred of Wessex in the ninth century, and the Benedictine Reform of the tenth and eleventh centuries. These two periods represent a time of renaissance in Anglo-Saxon England, when circumstance and ambition allowed for a number of impressive reformation enterprises, including increased dedication to education of both clerical orders and the laity, which therefore augmented the output of writing motivated by scholarly curiosity, ecclesiastical inquiry, and political strategizing. Sports-related concussions are a major public health concern affecting a significant number of collegiate student-athletes. Medical and public health research has addressed every aspect of concussion management processes including concussion education, medical diagnosis, recovery, and returning to sport and classroom. This research has led to several best-practices for concussion management. Since 2010, the NCAA has mandated that its member institutions maintain concussion management policies and procedures. It was conducted to examine the relationship between the students’ perceptual learning style preferences and their use of various types of language strategies. From 2011 to 2012, in Wisconsin, Governor Scott Walker and legislative republicans passed ACT- 10, a law severely limiting public sector/teachers union’s collective bargaining rights. This legislative effort shocked the nation with the bold move toward stricter regulations concerning the public sector, as Wisconsin is historically one of the most progressive states concerning labor within the United States. Teachers unions within the state took ACT-10 as an assault on their very profession. This dissertation focuses of three different subjects. The first is the synthesis and characterization of heptacoordinate amidinate compounds. Heptacoordinate compounds are not common, but their structures have been studied. Group 4 amidinate compounds have been used as precursors in the CVD/ ALD processes. Ancillary ligands, such as amidinates, have been used to reduce air-sensitivity of complexes. Reactions of these complexes with water have been used to make metal oxide thin films.

Type IV cracking in weldments of steel pipes after creep deformation is a concern in modern fossil-fueled power plants. Two possible methods for minimizing or eliminating Type IV cracking will be discussed. The first method alters the initial microstructure of typical Grade 91 steel base metal before welding, while the second provides baseline microstructure characteristics and creep performance of a new alloy that is strengthened by the intermetallic Fe2Nb Laves phase. The computational ability to accurately predict the conditions in an experiment under irradiation is a valuable tool in the operation of a research reactor whose scientific mission includes isotope production, materials irradiation, and neutron activation analysis. Organohalides such as tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) are among the most prevalent toxic groundwater contaminants. Remediation of organohalide-contaminated sites has high priority, and efficient and cost-effective remedies are needed to prevent environment and human exposure through contaminated water. Bacterial organohalide-respiration plays a major role in organohalide detoxification. Sciadopitys verticillata produces white viscous resin that is unique among the conifers. This research investigated effects of resin on bacteria from different ecological niches and the chemical composition of the resin. Each bacterial species was evaluated separately for response to winter- and summer-collected resins. Exposure to winter-collected resin reduced numbers of colonies of Bacillus cereus, Erwinia amylovora, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, and Escherichia coli and increased numbers of Xanthomonascampestris, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Pseudomonas syringae. Summer-collected resin affectedpopulation growth of two bacterial species; population counts of E. amylovora decreased and those of P. fluorescens increased. Selected strains of …

Recent advancements in experimental and theoretical nuclear physics have yielded new data and models that more accurately describe the decay of fission products compared to historical data currently used for many applications. This work examines the effect of the adopting the Effective Density Model theory for beta-delayed neutron emission probability on calculations of delayed-neutron production and fission product nuclide concentrations after fission bursts as well as the total delayed neutron fraction in comparison with the Keepin 6-group model.
