Investigation And Demonstration Of A Rich Combustor Cold Start Device For Alcohol Fueled Engines, David Kim Irick Dec 1997

Investigation And Demonstration Of A Rich Combustor Cold Start Device For Alcohol Fueled Engines, David Kim Irick

Doctoral Dissertations

Alcohols (methanol and ethanol) have been identified as having the potential to improve air quality when used to replace conventional gasoline. This potential is primarily due to the different organic species that are emitted by alcohol-fueled engines. The use of "near neat" alcohols gives greater benefits than fuels containing lower levels of alcohol, but neat alcohols present a significant cold starting problem.

The primary objective of this study was to develop a rich combustor device which will extend the cold start range of alcohol fueled engines to -30°C while reducing cold start emissions. In support of this objective a software …

Students' Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of The Tennessee Pre-Professional Program For The State's Black Residents From 1984 Through 1994, Ercille Hall Williams Dec 1997

Students' Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of The Tennessee Pre-Professional Program For The State's Black Residents From 1984 Through 1994, Ercille Hall Williams

Doctoral Dissertations

The 1984 Stipulation of Settlement of Geier v. McWherter, the State of Tennessee's desegregation case, mandated the development of a series of programs that would provide access to the state public higher institutions for all of its residents. These initiatives were developed to remedy the vestiges of a dual system of higher education that practiced legal discrimination and segregation. The Tennessee Pre-Professional (TPP), one of the desegregation mandates, was designed to increase the representation of black Tennessee residents in the state-supported professional schools of law and medicine. Under the state's dual system of higher education, these opportunities were non-existent …

A Sufficient Competence To Make Them Independent: Attitudes Towards Authority, Improvement And Independence In The Carolina-Virginia Backcountry, 1760-1800, Larry Anthony Wise Dec 1997

A Sufficient Competence To Make Them Independent: Attitudes Towards Authority, Improvement And Independence In The Carolina-Virginia Backcountry, 1760-1800, Larry Anthony Wise

Doctoral Dissertations

One theme largely neglected by backcountry scholars to this point is the process of integration which allowed the interior as a region to fuse with the larger social and cultural ways of the rest of the South during the latter part of the eighteenth century. This study will examine, through a series of vignettes, this process of integration and ordering which allowed the backcountry to lose a number of its distinct characteristics and fostered the emergence of more clearly American and Southern values by early in the nineteenth century.

At a point of departure, this dissertation will rely on the …

Design And Development Of A Variable-Flow Fan Nozzle Using Phase-Partition Air Sampling For Drift Assessment, Quy Duc Bui Dec 1997

Design And Development Of A Variable-Flow Fan Nozzle Using Phase-Partition Air Sampling For Drift Assessment, Quy Duc Bui

Doctoral Dissertations

Research focused on (1) the development of a new model on fan atomization, (2) the design and development of a variable-flow fan nozzle (VFFN) for on-the-go control of precision chemical application, and (3) the development of a phase-partition air sampler (PPAS) to evaluate spray drift from the VFFN. Relationships of spray angle, spray thickness, droplet size, and the spray velocity to the nozzle geometry were analytically explained by the new model. Three VFFN prototypes with spray angles of 50, 70 and 90 degrees and one PPAS prototype were designed and successfully tested. A new model on fan atomization was based …

Female Philopatry And Spatial Organization In The Raccoon (Procyon Lotor), Shyamala Ratnayeke Dec 1997

Female Philopatry And Spatial Organization In The Raccoon (Procyon Lotor), Shyamala Ratnayeke

Doctoral Dissertations

Among mammals, some of the most common types of cohesive social groupings originate form natal philopatry through the extended mother family. The recognition that females among some solitary mammals demonstrate natal philopatry suggests that an important part of understanding the evolution of social groupings in mammals is through establishing the conditions that lead to natal philopatry in solitary species. The North American raccoon, Procyon lotor, is a relatively solitary carnivore of the Procyonidae, a family that demonstrates both variability and flexibility in the nature and degree of sociality. This dissertation examines the conditions surrounding natal philopatry in a raccoon population …

Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction Of Lipids From Pythium Irregulare, Terry Hill. Walker Dec 1997

Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction Of Lipids From Pythium Irregulare, Terry Hill. Walker

Doctoral Dissertations

Lipids that contain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) have therapeutic value. Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of PUFA from the lower fungi, Pythium irregulare was attempted for freeze-dried material in the presence of an aqueous phase. Extraction showed some success at moisture contents up to 30% (wb) and with the addition of a novel CO2 -philic surfactant. Equilibrium and kinetic data are presented. Equilibrium data were taken for the fungal oil in a flow-through apparatus at a low flow rate for two isotherms (40 and 60°C) over a pressure range of 13.7 to 27.5 MPa. Equilibrium data were also taken for …

Characterization Of The Pathophysiology Of Wiskott-Aldrich Transgenic Mice, Sharon Golda Witonsky Dec 1997

Characterization Of The Pathophysiology Of Wiskott-Aldrich Transgenic Mice, Sharon Golda Witonsky

Doctoral Dissertations

Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is an X-Iinked recessive disease in which affected patients have any combination of the triad of classical symptoms of thrombocytopenia, eczema and immunodeficiencies. The gene has been cloned and sequenced, but its function is unknown. In order to determine the pathophysiology of the disease, transgenic animals have been generated which overexpress the normal Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASP) in T lymphocytes. By characterizing the pathobiology and immunology of these mice, we will better understand the normal function of Wiskott Aldrich syndrome protein (WASP).

The WASP transgenic mice have a profound phenotype that is characterized most prominently by splenomegaly …

Dental Microwear Analysis Of Averbuch: A Dietary Reconstruction Of A Mississippian Culture, Melissa G. Muendel Dec 1997

Dental Microwear Analysis Of Averbuch: A Dietary Reconstruction Of A Mississippian Culture, Melissa G. Muendel

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation reconstructs subsistence patterns of the inhabitants of Averbuch, a prehistoric late Mississippian culture, using SEM (scanning electron microscopy) to quantitatively assess the dental microwear of the permanent adult second mandibular molar of a selected skeletal sample from the Averbuch archaeological site. A comparison among the patterns of the Averbuch and those reported from other prehistoric sites in the United States is presented. The study uses the mesiolingual cusp (metaconid) tip facet (Kay and Hiiemae, 1974) of the mandibular permanent second molar to measure dental microwear features. Every cusp in the human mouth has an occlusal relationship to the …

Maximum Likelihood And Bayesian Estimation Of Skeletal Age-At-Death From The Human Pubic Symphysis, B. S. L. Hurst Dec 1997

Maximum Likelihood And Bayesian Estimation Of Skeletal Age-At-Death From The Human Pubic Symphysis, B. S. L. Hurst

Doctoral Dissertations

A number of methodological problems have recently plagued studies of adult skeletal age-at-death estimation. Over the last two decades, researchers have extended considerable effort to place age estimation studies on a firmer statistical ground. However, many of the current methods can still be criticized because they make unjustifiable assumptions or use inappropriate statistical models. Much of the controversy surrounding age-at-death estimation has focused specifically on the question of applying age standards from a reference collection of known-age individuals to a target group of unknown age.

The current study, involving a large sample (n=739) of adult male pubic symphysis data, demonstrates …

Modification Of Aph(3')-Iiia, An Aminoglycoside Antibiotic 3'-Phosphotranferase, To Characterize Its Active Site Residues, Ayça Akal

Masters Theses

Bacterial resistance to antibiotic drugs is posing a medical crisis situation to public health. Infections caused by the gram-positive genera represent the most important ones due to the fact that they are responsible for a wide variety of hospital-acquired infections. Treatment of staphylococcal and enterococcal infections most often require the administration of aminoglycoside/aminocyclitol group of antibiotics, which target the bacterial 308 ribosomal subunit, thereby interfering with the normal protein translation processes and ultimately leading to cell death. However, bacteria have responded to the pressure brought about by the use of these antibiotics by developing a number of mechanisms. One of …

Application Of Historical Precipitation Data To Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts For Reservoir System Operations, Bill C. Arnwine Dec 1997

Application Of Historical Precipitation Data To Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts For Reservoir System Operations, Bill C. Arnwine

Masters Theses

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) operates an integrated multi-use reservoir system. Accurate and reliable forecasts of expected precipitation are a critical segment of the decision-making process in the scheduling of daily reservoir operations and for long-term decision-making. TVA receives daily quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF) for the current day plus the nine following days from a weather forecast vendor. Application of TVA historical precipitation data in conjunction with the vendor forecast could increase the effectiveness of the precipitation forecasts in the long-term (6-10 day period in this context) portion of the forecasts.

Available historical precipitation data consists of 107 years of …

Use Of Ground Penetrating Radar To Map Soil Features That Influence Water Content, James Denton Bouldin Dec 1997

Use Of Ground Penetrating Radar To Map Soil Features That Influence Water Content, James Denton Bouldin

Masters Theses

Vadose zone studies are being conducted in the loessial soils at Ames Plantation, which is located near Memphis, Tennessee. The vadose zone beneath two agricultural production fields at this site (one a tilled field and the other a no-tilled field) is heterogeneous. The soil profile consists of two or more parent materials, varying soil textures, and lamella formations. These nonhomogeneous soils can govern solute migration throughout the vadose zone, having an impact on the offsite transport of agrochemicals.

To assist the ongoing vadose zone monitoring studies at Ames Plantation, an interdisciplinary team of scientists from The University of Tennessee is …

Experimental Study Of Static Mixers And Temperature Distortion Attenuation, Jon Wade Burfitt Dec 1997

Experimental Study Of Static Mixers And Temperature Distortion Attenuation, Jon Wade Burfitt

Masters Theses

Turbine engine altitude test facilities strive to accurately simulate conditions experienced in flight. Simulation of subsonic, high altitude flight requires very cold inlet air temperatures. Unfortunately, the process of creating these extreme temperatures can sometimes produce unacceptable temperature distortion. Non uniformity of the inlet flow temperature adversely affects turbine engine performance. One is then faced with either testing at warmer, non-standard temperatures or accepting additional uncertainty in the results. An effort was therefore undertaken to investigate the use of static mixers as a means of eliminating temperature distortion. Static mixers are non-moving mechanical devices inserted into conduits in order to …

Connecting Boundaries : Creating A Dialog Between Interior And Exterior Identities-A Nautical Museum In Figueira Da Foz, Scot William Frontis

Masters Theses

This thesis addresses boundaries as they relate to critical regionalism, For the purposes of this thesis the central issue of critical regionalism revolves around the question of how does one become or remain modern in a global, universal world while still maintaining a coherency of place, so that one's roots and traditions may be acknowledged, The thesis will focus on this boundary between the particulars of a place and its global context. Boundaries have the dual capacity to isolate and connect places and artifacts to make them distinguishable. Additionally, bounded situations address interior conditions as well as exterior conditions. Boundaries …

Quasi-Newton Iterations, Preconditioning, And Numerical Diffusion For A 4th-Order Operator Compact Compressible Navier-Stokes Solver, Joseph René Sylvain Graveline Dec 1997

Quasi-Newton Iterations, Preconditioning, And Numerical Diffusion For A 4th-Order Operator Compact Compressible Navier-Stokes Solver, Joseph René Sylvain Graveline

Masters Theses

This thesis deals with improvements to a Compressible Navier Stokes (N-S) solver. These code modifications will result in time performance and accuracy gain. The improvements are geared towards performance in the incompressible regime. Typical compressible N-S solvers converge very slowly in incompressible flow regimes. This leads to long run times for compressible problems with embedded low speed flows such as near stagnation points and boundary layers. In fact, separate incompressible codes are written for low speed problems which have faster convergence properties. The goal of the modifications is to provide a single N-S code which will not only have improved …

The Reduction Of Scale Force Uncertainty In Low Thrust Regions, Gregory Darin Hollis Dec 1997

The Reduction Of Scale Force Uncertainty In Low Thrust Regions, Gregory Darin Hollis

Masters Theses

Minimal scale force uncertainty in low thrust regions of an engine’s operating envelope is critical to meet flight test specifications as Air Force requirements become more stringent. In these low thrust regions, scale force accounts for over 90% of the total thrust uncertainty. Through experiments and experience, the elemental errors associated with scale force uncertainty have proven to be reducible. The primary contributors to scale force uncertainty in low thrust regions include such errors as thrust stand/load cell hysteresis and pre- to post-test zero shifts. Cell heating effects are also very important because they affect the test cell environment where …

Development Of A Hybrid Probe For Gas Turbine Combustor Measurements, Paul Armand Jalbert Dec 1997

Development Of A Hybrid Probe For Gas Turbine Combustor Measurements, Paul Armand Jalbert

Masters Theses

An innovative approach has been used to provide optical access to a combustor exhaust flow for nonintrusive measurements in the high temperature flow. This hybrid probe system combines a line-of-sight optical measurement system with an intrusive, high temperature - capable probe for emission, absorption, or transmission spectral measurements in the high temperature flow. A single 0.94 inch diameter probe concept was selected to be compatible with existing pitot / emission combustor exit rakes and to avoid the significant design challenge of maintaining optical alignment across long path lengths. The optical components were positioned at the top and bottom of a …

Using Latent Semantic Indexing For Data Mining, Jingqian Jiang Dec 1997

Using Latent Semantic Indexing For Data Mining, Jingqian Jiang

Masters Theses

Data Mining is the application of algorithms for extracting valuable informa-tion from large databases in order to make important business decisions. This study explores a new technique for data mining - Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI). LSI is an efficient information retrieval method for textual documents. By determining the singular value decomposition (SVD) of a large sparse term-by-document matrix, LSI constructs an approximate vector space model which rep-resents important associative relationships between terms and documents that are not evident in individual documents. This thesis explores the applicability of the LSI model to numerical databases, especially consumer product data. By properly chosing …
