Electrochemical Remediation Of Radionuclide- And Trichloroethene-Contaminated Groundwater Using Zero-Valent Iron/Iron Oxides And Mineralogical Characterization Of Iron Hydroxides Formed From Zero-Valent Iron, Yul Roh
Doctoral Dissertations
Recently, metal-based degradation of chlorinated organic compounds and immobilization of radionuclides and heavy metals for groundwater remediation have become popular topics in environmental science and engineering research. Although the zero-valent iron (Fe°)-based reactive barrier has been introduced as a cost-effective remediation technology for groundwaters contaminated by chlorinated organic compounds and reducible metals, the current approach of the technology has been criticized for its low process efficiency (reaction rate) and the effective life of the medium (longevity).
The objectives of this study are to (1) develop and evaluate electro-enhanced technology using Fe° for mobile radionuclides [e.g., TCO4- and UO …

A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Expanded Food And Nutrition Education Program, Janie L. Burney
Doctoral Dissertations
Data on the economic value of nutrition education programs, such as the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), can help decision makers choose between alternative programs based on costs and benefits. A cost-benefit analysis of EFNEP was conducted to determine if savings in food expenditures exceeded implementation costs. Costs were collected over a 6-months using expenditure reports and other records. Benefits were determined using prospective data from 371 females enrolled in EFNEP who completed a 24-hour food recall, behavior survey, and recorded the amount of money spent on food monthly at program entry and exit. Two treatment groups received …
Control Of Food Intake And Expression Of Hunger In The Northern Water Snake, Nerodia Sipedon (L.), Paul Timothy Andreadis
Control Of Food Intake And Expression Of Hunger In The Northern Water Snake, Nerodia Sipedon (L.), Paul Timothy Andreadis
Doctoral Dissertations
Most of what is known about the control and expression of appetite comes from studies of laboratory rodents. Such animals, which take small, frequent meals, are located at one end of a spectrum of feeding frequencies. The theme of the present work was to explore appetite in an animal that takes relatively large meals at long intervals. I studied some of the factors that control food intake and influence the expression of hunger in Northern water snakes, Nerodia sipedon; Serpentes: Colubridae). Subjects were collected in streams in eastern Tennessee, especially the Little River in Blount County.

Mothers' Perceptions Of Family-Centered Early Intervention Service Coordination, Elsa Macmillan Nownes
Mothers' Perceptions Of Family-Centered Early Intervention Service Coordination, Elsa Macmillan Nownes
Doctoral Dissertations
Profound changes have taken place in the way professionals work with families who have young children with disabilities. These changes have taken place because of revisions in what professionals believe is best practice and changes in laws that govern early intervention. Although previous researchers have addressed many questions pertaining to how best to serve young children and their families in early intervention, no previous researchers have used qualitative methods to explore parental perceptions of early intervention service coordination.
Mothers with children with special needs who resided in all nine districts served by Tennessee's Early Intervention System were interviewed. The sample …
A Population Genetics Study Of Southern Appalachian Brook Trout, Stanley Zane Guffey
A Population Genetics Study Of Southern Appalachian Brook Trout, Stanley Zane Guffey
Doctoral Dissertations
Observations of anglers and naturalists, and the findings of molecular genetics, indicate that native Southern Appalachian brook trout populations comprise a distinct lineage of Salvelinus fontinalis. In this century, the stream mileage inhabited by the region's only native salmonid has been reduced by 70-80%. Attempts to restore declining populations by stocking have eroded the genetic integrity of many remaining native populations through hybridization with hatchery strains. In this study I review the decline and current status of brook trout in the Southern Appalachians (Part I), document the genetic structure of populations in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Part II), …

Evaluation Of A Site-Specific Weed Management Strategy, Joyce Allison Tredaway
Doctoral Dissertations
Studies were conducted in 1997 and 1998 to compare conventional to site-specific weed management techniques. Field experiments were conducted in Knoxville, Tennessee. The study utilized a randomized complete block design with a split-plot treatment arrangement with nesting.
Preliminary research was conducted in 1996 to establish selective weed densities. Monocot and dicot densities were generated by applying selective herbicides. Weeds present included trumpetcreeper (Campsis radicans), common cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium), broadleaf signalgrass (Brachiaria platyphylla), and rhizome johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense). Field perimeters, plots, and weeds were mapped using global positioning systems (GPS).

Applications Of Molecular Markers In Genetic Analysis, Farshid Ghassemi
Doctoral Dissertations
Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and microsatellite molecular markers were used to map two soybean nodulation genes, enod2 and leghemoglobin (lbc3). In addition, a high annealing temperature DNA amplification fingerprinting (DAF) method was developed for DNA fingerprinting of soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Mychorrizae, aphid, centipedegrass, and bermudagrass samples.
Recombinant inbred lines (RILs) as well as an F< sub >2 segregating population of soybean Glycine max (L. Merr) facilitated the mapping of two expressed sequence tags (EST) involved in early nodulation and subsequent nitrogen fixation in soybean. For the early nodulin gene enodl2, the parents of RILs, Minsoy …
Economic Effects Of The Boll Weevil Eradication Program On The Western Tennessee Economy, Otto Patricio Suarez
Economic Effects Of The Boll Weevil Eradication Program On The Western Tennessee Economy, Otto Patricio Suarez
Doctoral Dissertations
Boll weevils have inflicted serious losses to cotton producers throughout this century. For the last two decades, the Boll Weevil Eradication Program has been successfully implemented in several cotton producing areas in the country. By effectively eliminating boll weevils, this government-sponsored program has contributed to lower insect control costs, improved cotton yields, and increased cotton acreage. The Boll Weevil Eradication Program has improved the profitability of the cotton farm business.
An eradication program was approved for Southwestern Tennessee in early 1997 and plans to extend the program to Northwestern Tennessee are under way. This study evaluated the potential economic effects …

Partial Purification And Characterization Of Aflatoxin B₁ Degrading Enzyme Produced By Flavobacterium Aurantiacum, Ronald Derike Smiley
Doctoral Dissertations
The ability of crude protein extracts, obtained from the enzymatic lysis of F. aurantiacum, to remove Aflatoxin B1 (AB1) and Aflatoxin B2 (AB2) was investigated. Crude protein extracts (800 µg/ ml total protein), prepared by enzymatic lysis (0.5 mg/ ml lysozyme) of a 48 h culture, removed 83% of AB1 and 78% of AB2 from aqueous solution after 24 h incubation. The buffer composition, used during the enzymatic lysis of F. aurantiacum affected the amount of AB1 degraded due to the total amount of protein released by the cells. Maximum …

The Gibbs Farmstead: An Archaeological Study Of Rural Economy And Material Life In Southern Appalachia, 1790-1920, Mark D. Groover
Doctoral Dissertations
Three interrelated interpretive themes are explored in this dissertation through reference to the Gibbs farmstead (40KN124), a domestic site in north Knox County, Tennessee, that was inhabited by four successive households of the Gibbs family between circa 1792 and 1913. The topics of rural economy, material life, and temporal process guide inquiry in this study. World systems theory is used to examine how aspects of the emerging global system influenced daily life and household-level economic strategies among a rural family in Southern Appalachia, considered to be an internal periphery within the world system. Historical information indicates the Gibbs family participated …

Variation Of The Aerosol Optical Depth At The Arm Cart Site, Terra Michelle Nash
Variation Of The Aerosol Optical Depth At The Arm Cart Site, Terra Michelle Nash
Masters Theses
Atmospheric aerosols are an important factor in the global radiation budget and greenhouse warming effect. Aerosols contribute to atmospheric pollution and degradation of visibility. In an effort to better characterize the variations in the columnar aerosol loading, the aerosol optical depth (AOD) has been computed for five of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) Cloud and Radiation Testbed (CART) facilities. Characterization of the AOD shows clear evidence that the spatial and temporal variations exist at a much finer scale than those of the CART site. The AOD measurements are indicators of atmospheric pollution and reduced visibility, and …
Evaluation Of Laboratory Compaction Of Hot Mix Asphalt, Eric A. Ownby
Evaluation Of Laboratory Compaction Of Hot Mix Asphalt, Eric A. Ownby
Masters Theses
As mix design evolves from conventional Marshall design to Superpave and beyond, it is becoming necessary to develop test methods to evaluate the performance of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). One such method being developed is the Pavement Technology, Inc. (PTI) Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA). However, if the APA is to be used for performance testing, it is imperative that the specimens to be tested in this device are representative of the HMA to be compacted on the roadway. In light of this observation, three laboratory compaction methods employed in the design of HMA were evaluated. The compaction methods evaluated include …
A Netsolve Client For Windows Nt/95, Rick Phillips
A Netsolve Client For Windows Nt/95, Rick Phillips
Masters Theses
Software libraries are often used to solve scientific computing problems. There are, however, barriers that limit the usefulness of these libraries. The NetSolve system was developed to remove some of these barriers by allowing users to access software libraries over a network. However, the NetSolve system is not available on all platforms. In this thesis, a NetSolve for Windows client was developed to extend the availability of the NetSolve system to the popular Windows NT and Windows 95 operating systems. The source code for the existing UNIX NetSolve client was used as a starting point and updated to work in …
