Parametric Analysis Of A Coupled Photovoltaic/Thermal Concentrating Solar Collector For Electricity Generation, Todd Otanicar, I. Chowdhury, P. E. Phelan, R. Prasher

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works

The analysis of the combined efficiencies in a coupled photovoltaic (PV)/thermal concentrating solar collector are presented based on a coupled electrical/thermal model. The calculations take into account the drop in efficiency that accompanies the operation of PV cells at elevated temperatures along with a detailed analysis of the thermal system including losses. An iterative numerical scheme is described that involves a coupled electrothermal simulation of the solar energy conversion process. In the proposed configuration losses in the PV cell due to reduced efficiencies at elevated temperatures and the incident solar energy below the PV bandgap are both harnessed as heat. …

Slip Ramp Spacing Design For Truck Only Lanes Using Microscopic Simulation, Manoj Vallati 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Slip Ramp Spacing Design For Truck Only Lanes Using Microscopic Simulation, Manoj Vallati

Masters Theses

"This research work proposes recommendations for slip ramp spacing between the TOLs and the general GPLs along Missouri rural interstate highways using a microscopic simulation model, VISSIM. Simulation of peak period rural traffic conditions indicated that heavy vehicle speeds were directly proportional to the lengths of the merge, diverge, and link sections. The proposed design recommendations for slip ramp spacing are based on the results of these section lengths. Design of experiments was carried out using a central composite design. As the slip ramp spacing depended heavily on the lane change behavior of drivers, a sensitivity analysis was performed of …

Implementation Of Integrated Function Structure And Object-Oriented Design Framework, Qiong Gao 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Implementation Of Integrated Function Structure And Object-Oriented Design Framework, Qiong Gao

Masters Theses

"The function structure method is commonly used in mechanical product design. Although a function structure allows defining all the functions of the components of a product and their interactions, it does not have an effective architecture for the software design of a mechatronic product. An integrated function structure and object-oriented design framework was recently developed to overcome this disadvantage. In this thesis, the implementation of this framework to design several products in different categories, including an inkjet printer, and electric screwdriver and a vacuum cleaner, is discussed. The design results obtained using the new framework are compared to the design …

Molecular Simulation Of The Infrared Absorption Cross Section And Thermophysical Properties Of A Polyatomic Fluid, Zhi Liang 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Molecular Simulation Of The Infrared Absorption Cross Section And Thermophysical Properties Of A Polyatomic Fluid, Zhi Liang

Doctoral Dissertations

"The work presented in this dissertation aims at ab initio calculations of the infrared absorption cross section, heat capacity, self-diffusion coefficient, shear viscosity and thermal conductivity of a polyatomic fluid with the aid of statistical mechanics. The simulation is firstly focused on calculating single-molecule properties such as molecular structure, vibrational energy eigen values and transition dipole moments using an efficient method based on the density functional theory. Based on these ab initio results, the infrared absorption cross sections are determined by the Fermi's Golden rule, and the thermophysical properties are determined from molecular dynamics simulations. Using carbon dioxide as an …

Effects Of Optimized And Sub-Optimum Two Degree Of Freedom Lining Tolerances On Modeled Inlet Acoustic Attenuation And Normal Incidence Impedance Measurement At Elevated Temperatures, David R. Burd 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Effects Of Optimized And Sub-Optimum Two Degree Of Freedom Lining Tolerances On Modeled Inlet Acoustic Attenuation And Normal Incidence Impedance Measurement At Elevated Temperatures, David R. Burd

Doctoral Dissertations

"This work first investigates the effect of manufacturing tolerances on realized attenuation for two degree-of-freedom linings with the use of lining models and finite element duct propagation codes. Acoustic linings were created for two turbofan engines that optimize attenuation at takeoff/sideline and approach conditions. Lining physical and geometric parameters were set, which best meet the optimum impedance requirements at two target frequencies. Similar linings were created to investigate sub-optimum designs. Variations of these parameters representing realistic manufacturing tolerances were used to systematically examine the effect on installed impedance and predicted attenuation. Attenuation at sideline and approach conditions was found to …

Experimental Studies Of Turbulent Boundary Layers Over A Rough Forward-Facing Step And Its Coarse Scale Resolution Approximations, Huiying Ren

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

High spatial resolution PIV experiments are performed in the x-y plane at two different spanwise positions to compare the turbulent boundary layers over smooth and rough forward-facing-steps as well as the rough step's two coarse scale-resolution approximations. The Reynolds number based on the step's mean height, Reh, is 3450 and the ratio of the boundary layer thickness to the step's height is δ/h = 8. The roughness topography on the top surface of the rough step is replicated from a realistic turbine blade and is intrinsically three-dimensional and highly irregular. The surface topographies of the coarse scale-resolution …

Design And Fabrication Of Micronozzles For Drug Delivery Applications, Yuxuan Zhou 2010 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Design And Fabrication Of Micronozzles For Drug Delivery Applications, Yuxuan Zhou

LSU Master's Theses

Inhaled drug is an important drug delivery route. It is widely used in medications for respiratory disorders. However, it has some significant limitations, for examples, concentration of drug, output, and particles size, are not accurately controlled in most of the available drug delivery systems today. Various new devices and technologies continue to be developed and introduced. Vibrating orifice is one of them. The critical issue of vibrating orifice technology is the fabrication of micro-nozzles. Traditional technique to fabricate these nozzles is to use dry etching method, which tends to be expensive and inconvenient for mass production. Other two optional fabrication …

Characterization Of Internal Wake Generator At Low Reynolds Number With A Linear Cascade Of Low Pressure Turbine Blades, Chase A. Nessler 2010 Wright State University

Characterization Of Internal Wake Generator At Low Reynolds Number With A Linear Cascade Of Low Pressure Turbine Blades, Chase A. Nessler

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Unsteady flow and its effects on the boundary layer of a low pressure turbine blade is complex in nature. The flow encountered in a low pressure turbine contains unstructured free-stream turbulence, as well as structured periodic perturbations caused by upstream vane row wake shedding. Researchers have shown that these conditions strongly influence turbine blade performance and boundary layer separation, especially at low Reynolds numbers. In order to simulate these realistic engine conditions and to study the effects of periodic unsteadiness, a moving bar wake generator has been designed and characterized for use in the Air Force Research Labs low speed …

Effect Of Free-Edges On Melt Pool Geometry And Solidification Microstructure In Beam-Based Fabrication Methods, Joy Elizabeth Davis 2010 Wright State University

Effect Of Free-Edges On Melt Pool Geometry And Solidification Microstructure In Beam-Based Fabrication Methods, Joy Elizabeth Davis

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Laser and electron beam-based additive manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V are under consideration for application to aerospace components. A critical concern for these processes is the ability to obtain a consistent and desirable microstructure and corresponding mechanical properties of the deposit. Based on the Rosenthal solution for a moving point-heat source, recent work has developed simulation-based process maps for the thermal conditions controlling microstructure (grain size and morphology) in beam-based deposition of semi-infinite geometries, where a steady-state melt pool exists away from free-edges. In the current study, the Rosenthal solution is modified to include the effects of free-edges. This is accomplished by …

Risk Quantification And Reliability Based Design Optimization In Reusable Launch Vehicles, Jason Maxwell King 2010 Wright State University

Risk Quantification And Reliability Based Design Optimization In Reusable Launch Vehicles, Jason Maxwell King

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Due to the inherent natural variability of parameters with reusable launch vehicles, design considerations without use of a reliability or safety index may be unreliable and vulnerable to vehicle failures. Generally in preliminary air vehicle design little information is known regarding design variable uncertainties, consequently requiring a technique that can quantify epistemic uncertainties. Evidence Theory is employed to accomplish this task resulting in a reliability bound of belief and plausibility. Due to the discontinuous nature of the belief and plausibility function it is necessary to implement a continuous function known as plausibility decision to be used to calculate sensitivities that …

Aircraft Gearbox Dynamics Subject To Electromechanical Actuator Regenerative Energy Flow, Matthew S. Rutledge 2010 Wright State University

Aircraft Gearbox Dynamics Subject To Electromechanical Actuator Regenerative Energy Flow, Matthew S. Rutledge

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

To increase reliability and efficiency, standard aircraft components are being replaced with more electric subsystems aimed to reduce weight, conserve space, and improve energy management. One application of this process replaces standard hydraulic actuators used in flap or aileron movements with electromechanical actuators powered by an external generator. During different types of return movements, the electromechanical actuator will produce regenerative power that flows back through the generator and pulses into the engine-gearbox subsystem. The regenerative power, defined by characteristic amplitude, frequency, and other pulse attributes, coupled with the driving force produced by the engine may dramatically impact the performance and …

Computational Study Of Direct Fuel Injection In The Rotax 914 Engine, Brad Pollock 2010 Wright State University

Computational Study Of Direct Fuel Injection In The Rotax 914 Engine, Brad Pollock

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Direct injection spark ignition (DISI) is a fuel delivery method in which the fuel is introduced directly into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. Although direct fuel injection was first pioneered in the early 1920's, it has only recently become a reliable option due to advances made in control systems and injection technology. Direct injection enables increased fuel efficiency and higher power output than a conventional Port Fuel Injection (PFI) system. By delivering pressurized fuel directly into the cylinder, the degree of fuel atomization and the fuel vaporization rate are increased. Hence, the air/fuel mixture can be more …
