Thermomechanical Analysis Of Rock Asperity In Fractures Of Enhanced Geothermal Systems, Chao Zeng

Doctoral Dissertations

"Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) offer great potential for dramatically expanding the use of geothermal energy and become a promising supplement for fossil energy. The EGS is to extract heat by creating a subsurface system to which cold water can be added through injection wells. Injected water is heated by contact with rock and returns to the surface through production well. Fracture provides the primary conduit for fluid flow and heat transfer in natural rock. Fracture is propped by fracture roughness with varying heights which is called asperity. The stability of asperity determines fracture aperture and hence imposes substantial effect on …

Natural Gas Storage Using Clathrate Technology : Enhanced Formation At High Temperature, Kan Jeenmuang

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Solidified natural gas (SNG) by storing natural gas in the hydrate form, which is safe and easy to recover stored gas compared to other methods. However, to make this technology competitive, storing natural gas at a higher temperature, lower pressure with faster formation is needed. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is a well-known thermodynamic promoter used to increase the hydrate formation temperature. However, increasing the hydrate formation temperature has a drawback on decreasing the formation rate. Nonpolar amino acids have been used as a secondary promoter, which increases the hydrate formation kinetics. This work used 5.56 mol% THF cooperated with different concentrations of …

Modeling Overpressure Development During Shale Rock Compaction Coupling Poroelasticity And Permeability Evolution Above 3km Depth, Wenyu Zhao 2019 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Modeling Overpressure Development During Shale Rock Compaction Coupling Poroelasticity And Permeability Evolution Above 3km Depth, Wenyu Zhao

Masters Theses

"The evolution of pore pressure including overpressure during sedimentation is an important process to consider when analyzing whether high pore pressure causes rock failure. High pore pressure is caused by under-compaction due to the rapid burial of low-permeability sediments, and as a result, porosity decreases less rapidly with depth than in normally compacted sediments where porosity decreases exponentially with depth. While under-compaction related pore pressure magnitudes have been determined empirically, in most numerical modeling approaches, the pore pressure is either applied as a static magnitude or coupled to a fluid flow simulator. This study simulates the pore pressure evolution during …

Temperature Transient Analysis For Reservoir Characterization, Yilin Mao 2018 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Temperature Transient Analysis For Reservoir Characterization, Yilin Mao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Recent developments in downhole temperature measurements open new alternatives contributing to reservoir characterization. In this dissertation, novel forward and inverse models to analyze production- and injection-induced temperature signals are developed for conventional and unconventional reservoir applications. Important limitations of the proposed models are addressed by accounting for fluid property variations and complex production strategies.

Forward modeling approaches involve making relevant assumptions that allow rigorous analytical solutions to be constructed using Laplace transform, Method of Characteristics, and control volume analysis. Our results of the analytical models are benchmarked with those from commercial numerical simulation software. Multiple possible scenarios of conventional reservoirs …
