Stages Of Creating Parallel Corpus Of English-Uzbek Similes, Anorkhon Ahmedova

Philology Matters

In recent years, corpus linguistics has been mentioned in the scientific literature as the main tool for the elaboration of dictionaries and grammar manuals, the creation of corpus analysis, the practical use of corpus, as well as the statistical study of linguistic analysis using corpus. Articles, textbooks, manuals on the creation of general and special electronic corpus have been published, but as the Uzbek language is a relatively new field of corpus linguistics, there is a need for research on some issues. The development of corpus linguistics and the increasing focus on statistical methods of processing linguistic materials have led …

Translation Problems And Their Solutions, Roviyajon Abdullaeva

Philology Matters

Translation is a form of artistic creation. Translation is an ancient art, its history is long, its roots go back to antiquity. Literary translation is a bridge between national literatures.
Translation and translation studies have been considered for many years as a part of literary science. In Uzbekistan, literary translation as a philological science was formed in the 50-60s of the last century. It was included in the curriculum of Tashkent State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages named after F.Engels (UzSWLU) and foreign philological faculties of universities as a separate subject.
In the 70s, a department of translation theory was …

Objectives Of Particles In The Uzbek And English Languages, Gulrukh Kakhkhorova

Philology Matters

This article is devoted to one of the auxiliary groups of words used in the English and Uzbek languages – particles. The British and Uzbeks live in distant lands, belong to different language families, and speak different language systems; naturally, they differ in their closeness to each other in terms of word grouping.
It is known that in the modern Uzbek literary language there are six types of words meaning due to suffixes, some of which are added to the word, and some are separated from the word with a hyphen. Given the above, the heterogeneous nature of the particle …

University Students' Perceptions Of Writing Assessment, Hanan Alaa Hegazi 2021 The American University in Cairo AUC

University Students' Perceptions Of Writing Assessment, Hanan Alaa Hegazi

Theses and Dissertations

Instructors and students are the pillars of higher education. There is substantial interest in teachers’ beliefs, preferences, and perceptions in language assessment research, with an emphasis on writing assessment. Additionally, there is a growing body of research investigating students’ perceptions of assessment. However, research that examines how students perceive writing assessment is limited. Therefore, this study investigates two aspects: (a) students’ perceptions of their writing ability and (b) their perceptions of writing assessment in an English-medium private university in Cairo. This study adopts a mixed-methods approach for data collection, which involved distributing student questionnaires, conducting semi-structured interviews, and collecting writing …

Lethalics and the free indirect style: on the road to intertextual parody

Literary works would have a memory. Here is a postulate which would make us consider intertextuality as "a library where each trans / elm text. others which modify it. The author, to borrow an expression from Umberto Eco, should certainly "die so as not to interfere with the progress of his work" His death without his knowledge, since it can be buried even during his lifetime, is in any case a theoretical commitment which allows the dialogue between the texts to be enriched and to always make this …

Syntax of the complex sentence: the case of the relative clause in Amazigh (Tachelhit)

After a brief presentation of the complex sentence in Amazigh, we will focus, in this article, on the study of the relative clause and on the analysis of its structure. We will try to demonstrate, by relying on formal criteria such as position and syntactic function, that there is indeed a homogeneous class of relative pronouns and a relative subordinate with its specificities but also that it may have in common with other languages.

The inventory of the negation system in Standard Arabic consists of five commonly used negation elements, (viz.laa, lam, Zan, maa, and laysa), (Abbas, H. 1975). They have different distributional and/or temporal properties. However, the properties of laysa are the most peculiar of all the others (Benmamoun1992).For instance, at the morphological level, it behaves like an auxiliary: it is associated with a present tense specification and it inflects for agreement morphology. At the distributional level, and contrary to the other negation elements, it seems independent of its predicate. In this study, conducted with in the minimalist frame work as developed …

Foundations Of Linguistics And Identity In L2 Teaching And Learning: Agency Through Linguistic Enrichment, Differentiated Instruction And Teacher Identity, Marnie Jo Petray, Rebecca Shapiro, Gladys M. Vega

Publications and Research

Language, procedure, and identity are L2 teaching/learning essentials that may promote agency and stimulate synergies among knowledge, practice, and reflection (Diaz Maggioli, 2014; Duff, 2012). This meta-report presents three studies that collectively advance agency and endorse linguistic foundations as enrichment, differentiated instruction as engagement, and teacher identity as empowerment. All of these theoretical constructs are key to successful L2 teaching and acquisition. Study 1 quantitatively reports on introductory linguistics’ presence or absence in 114 master’s programs at 54 US institutions. Findings suggest that linguistics’ curricular presence is inconsistent and training for optimal impact in the L2 classroom is lacking. Given …

Racial And Gender Discrimination Predict Mental Health Outcomes Among Healthcare Workers Beyond Pandemic-Related Stressors: Findings From A Cross-Sectional Survey, Rachel Hennein, Jessica Bonumwezi, Max Jordan Nguemeni Tiako, Petty Tineo, Sarah R. Lowe

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Racial and gender discrimination are risk factors for adverse mental health outcomes in the general population; however, the effects of discrimination on the mental health of healthcare workers needs to be further explored, especially in relation to competing stressors. Thus, we administered a survey to healthcare workers to investigate the associations between perceived racial and gender discrimination and symptoms of depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress, and burnout during a period of substantial stressors related to the COVID-19 pandemic and a national racial reckoning. We used multivariable linear regression models, which controlled for demographics and pandemic-related stressors. Of the 997 participants (Mean …

Lexical Stress Realization In Mandarin Second Language Learners Of English: An Acoustic And Articulatory Study, Boram Kim

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation investigated the acoustic and articulatory correlates of lexical stress in Mandarin second language (L2) learners of English, as well as in first language (L1) speakers. The present study used a minimal pair respective to stress location (e.g., OBject versus obJECT) obtained from a publicly available Mandarin Accented English Electromagnetic articulography corpus dataset. In the acoustic domain, the use of acoustic parameters (duration, intensity, F0, and vowel quality) was measured in stressed and unstressed vowels. In the articulatory domain, the positional information from tongue tip (TT), tongue dorsum (TD), upper lip (UL), lower lip (LL), and jaw (JAW) were …

Label Imputation For Homograph Disambiguation: Theoretical And Practical Approaches, Jennifer M. Seale 2021 CUNY Graduate Center

Label Imputation For Homograph Disambiguation: Theoretical And Practical Approaches, Jennifer M. Seale

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation presents the first implementation of label imputation for the task of homograph disambiguation using 1) transcribed audio, and 2) parallel, or translated, corpora. For label imputation from parallel corpora, a hypothesis of interlingual alignment between homograph pronunciations and text word forms is developed and formalized. Both audio and parallel corpora label imputation techniques are tested empirically in experiments that compare homograph disambiguation model performance using: 1) hand-labeled training data, and 2) hand-labeled training data augmented with label-imputed data. Regularized, multinomial logistic regression and pre-trained ALBERT, BERT, and XLNet language models fine-tuned as token classifiers are developed for homograph …
