Traditional birth attendants (TBAs) are important for maternal health care especially in Africa’s low-income areas. Without doubt, the relevance of TBAs in developing countries such as Nigeria is not expected to reduce in the foreseeable future. The knowledge of traditional birth attendants will continue to be needed and considering the tacit nature of their knowledge, there is a need to preserve the knowledge in this profession and promote sharing of best practices to prevent maternal mortality issues. This study investigated the knowledge sharing (KS) and referral practices of TBAs in low-income urban areas of South-west Nigeria. Qualitative approach was adopted …

Fabrication And Errors In The Bibliographic Citations Generated By Chatgpt, William H. Walters, Esther Isabelle Wilder

Publications and Research

Although chatbots such as ChatGPT can facilitate cost-effective text generation and editing, factually incorrect responses (hallucinations) limit their utility. This study evaluates one particular type of hallucination: fabricated bibliographic citations that do not represent actual scholarly works. We used ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4 to produce short literature reviews on 42 multidisciplinary topics, compiling data on the 636 bibliographic citations (references) found in the 84 papers. We then searched multiple databases and websites to determine the prevalence of fabricated citations, to identify errors in the citations to non-fabricated papers, and to evaluate adherence to APA citation format. Within this set of documents, …

Reading Images With A Critical Eye: Teaching Strategies For Academic Librarians, Dana Statton Thompson, Stephanie Beene 2023 University of New Mexico - Main Campus

Reading Images With A Critical Eye: Teaching Strategies For Academic Librarians, Dana Statton Thompson, Stephanie Beene

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

From childhood on, we are taught how to read words on a printed page or, increasingly, on a screen. Reading text is also heavily reinforced across subjects throughout higher education. However, when it comes to instruction in visual information, such as charts, graphs, infographics, memes, or photographs, the same emphasis is not applied. (For the purposes of this chapter, we use the terms “visual information,” “images,” and “visual media” interchangeably to mean one or more of the various visual media with or without sound). By the time students enter college, they are underprepared to interpret images, let alone analyze, describe, …

Past Challenges And The Future Of Discrete Event Simulation, Andrew J. Collins, Farinaz Sabz Ali Pour, Craig A. Jordan

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

The American scientist Carl Sagan once said: “You have to know the past to understand the present.” We argue that having a meaningful dialogue on the future of simulation requires a baseline understanding of previous discussions on its future. For this paper, we conduct a review of the discrete event simulation (DES) literature that focuses on its future to understand better the path that DES has been following, both in terms of who is using simulation and what directions they think DES should take. Our review involves a qualitative literature review of DES and a quantitative bibliometric analysis of the …

Modeling Collaborative Research Practices With Zotero, Julian Kilker 2023 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Modeling Collaborative Research Practices With Zotero, Julian Kilker

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

The early stages of research when students explore topics and evaluate resources are critical. Yet researchers can be overwhelmed by evaluating sources, organizing resources and notes, and working with collaborators. During these stages it is particularly important to model meaningful research relationships to support student success. I address these challenges by having students explore Zotero, a free “research assistant” application and web portal, as they work on structured research assignments. While Zotero is known as a powerful citation manager, my practice focuses on its features that are most relevant to storing, organizing, and sharing resources while working on both informal …
