How can SCELC librarians make user-centered decisions around emerging technologies like GenAI, when user research is commonly dismissed as too resource intensive to be useful to libraries? We are researchers at two SCELC affiliate institutions whose commitment to equity and justice-oriented technology librarianship has led us to confront this question. We pursue Slow, collaborative research including user studies because we believe that grounding library technology in the needs and lived experience of students and university employees strengthens the connections with colleagues and library users that we need to advocate for technology that realizes our libraries' values. In this session we …

Providing Access To Historic Aerial Photographs At The University Of Montana’S Archives And Special Collections, Donna E. McCrea, Bruce Godfrey, Elizabeth Singh-Search 2026 University of Montana

Providing Access To Historic Aerial Photographs At The University Of Montana’S Archives And Special Collections, Donna E. Mccrea, Bruce Godfrey, Elizabeth Singh-Search

Journal of Western Archives

Archives and libraries hold significant collections of historic aerial imagery; improvements in geographic information system (GIS) technology and computer vision, a field of artificial intelligence, are dramatically expanding their research potential. This case study describes the activities of the University of Montana’s Archives and Special Collections to facilitate access to a collection of 1930s aerial images, outlines the rationale for investing time and effort in the project and offers considerations for other repositories with historic aerial photography collections. The authors encourage archivists and librarians to be involved in creating both best practices and technological tools that meet the needs of …

What Can I Share—And Where? Digital Literacy, Open Licenses, And Faculty Publishing Pathways, Victoria Peters 2026 DePauw University

What Can I Share—And Where? Digital Literacy, Open Licenses, And Faculty Publishing Pathways, Victoria Peters

Library Faculty publications

Faculty create a wide range of digital materials – articles, syllabi, datasets, lecture media, public scholarship and creative work – but questions about copyright, licensing and “where this work belongs” often create barriers to sharing. This Open Education Week workshop introduces digital literacy concepts through the lens of open licenses and publishing pathways. Participants will explore how Creative Commons licenses work, how to decide what level of openness is appropriate for different kinds of work and where faculty can publish or share materials – from journals and institutional repositories to open platforms and community-aligned publishing models. Designed for a liberal …

Implementing Web Governance & A Design System For Libguides Cms, Anders Lyon, Brian Schumacher 2026 University of San Francisco

Implementing Web Governance & A Design System For Libguides Cms, Anders Lyon, Brian Schumacher

Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship

At University of San Francisco’s Gleeson Library, LibGuides functions as the primary platform for our main website as well as for research guides. Managing both types of content in the same way led to familiar CMS governance challenges: inconsistent structure, design drift, unclear responsibility for maintenance, and blurred distinctions between core website content and research guides. To address this, we undertook a collaborative UX and systems-led process to develop and implement a web governance framework and accompanying design system. The governance framework establishes guiding principles, defines content stewardship roles, differentiates expectations by content type, and standardizes branding and responsibility across …

Show Me The (Publication) Data: A Case Study Of Author Affiliation Publication Data Sources Used In Transformative Agreements Assessment At A Mid-Sized Institution, Amy Pham

Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship

Bibliometrics has become an increasingly important metric type for negotiating and assessing transformative agreements, particularly corresponding author data. This case study from the University of San Diego compares OpenAlex, Web of Science, and publisher-provided data using real examples of publication data for TA assessment. Even at a mid-sized institution such as USD, the accuracy and completeness of publication information differs between data sources and brings into question ongoing issues with disambiguation and institution affiliation.

“It’S A Lot More To It Than Just Research”: Integrating Critical Data Literacy And Reasoning With Data Into A Stem Summer Camp, Marc T. Sager, Saki L. Milton, Candace Walkington 2026 Southern Methodist University

“It’S A Lot More To It Than Just Research”: Integrating Critical Data Literacy And Reasoning With Data Into A Stem Summer Camp, Marc T. Sager, Saki L. Milton, Candace Walkington

Publications

Purpose: This study explores how middle-grade girls from predominantly underrepresented and underserved racially and ethnically minoritized (UUREM) backgrounds developed critical data literacy (CDL) through participation in a week-long residential STEM camp. Given the increasing importance of data science education in a data-driven world, this research examines how informal learning environments can support CDL development among youth from historically marginalized groups.

Design/Methodology/Approach: The study draws on qualitative interview data from eleven participants, and their group-produced artifacts to investigate how the camp experience supported engagement with data and the development of CDL. Interviews explored participants' experiences with data collection, organization, analysis, and …

Libraries

Purpose Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology provides academic libraries with an opportunity to improve users’ experience. However, the application of AI in academic libraries in low- and middle-income countries is yet to be established. Thus, this scoping review aims to assess the extent of AI utilisation in academic libraries in low- and middle-income countries.

Design We performed searches in five databases, which included SCOPUS, Web of Science, Library and Information Science Technology Abstracts (LISTA), Academic Search Premier, and Google Scholar. The scoping review adopted the following search strategy: (Artificial intelligence OR AI OR Fourth Industrial Revolution OR 4th Industrial Revolution OR …

Graduate students often need support with research skills and other professional development that is under-recognized by their programs. Librarians play a key role in helping students fill in these gaps. This case study reviews student feedback on a librarian-developed and -delivered credit-bearing course. The course, Library Research and Scholarly Communication Fundamentals, is offered to graduate students across all disciplines. The curriculum is flexible and applicable to each student’s research, covering topics such as researching literature, citation and data management, and publishing in scholarly journals. Foreword: Resisting Erasure: Libraries In Palestine And Palestine In Libraries, Emily Drabinski

Publications and Research

This foreword opens an anthology that explores research and experiences at the intersection of Palestine and libraries. Part one examines how Palestinian librarians, archivists, and individuals resist erasure by preserving Palestinian materials and narratives and by ensuring Palestinians’ access to library resources amidst recurring cycles of destruction and confiscation. Part two explores how librarians in the United States respond to pressure from right-wing and pro-Israel advocacy groups that are quick to label any effort to include Palestinians and their histories as antisemitic.
