Leveraging Student Specialties For Innovative Digital Commons Exhibits, Madison Price, Sara DeCaro 2026 Pittsburg State University

Leveraging Student Specialties For Innovative Digital Commons Exhibits, Madison Price, Sara Decaro

Faculty Submissions

In this presentation, Madison Price and Sara DeCaro of Pittsburg State University will cover their unique projects created with Digital Commons Exhibits, what inspired them, and how they incorporated student employees into their workflow. Pittsburg State’s location in southeast Kansas has been home to historically significant institutions like the Haldeman-Julius Publishing Company, an internationally-known leftist press, and artists such as Gordon Parks and Eva Jessye.

PSU’s collection of 2,000 Haldeman-Julius printing plates presented a quandary for Special Collections, until one student’s interest in them prompted this question: could the plates still be used? The result was multiple collaborations across PSU’s …

Virtual Rock Box – 3d Objects As Teaching/Learning Objects, Amy Reese 2026 University Of Alabama At Birmingham

Virtual Rock Box – 3d Objects As Teaching/Learning Objects, Amy Reese

Libraries Professional Work

3D models are poised to provide learning experiences that can be equivalent to those provided by physical objects. At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, geology professor, Dr. Scott Brande, received NSF funding to enhance teaching rock identification and categorization for introductory undergraduate geoscience classes. He needed an institutional platform to make the 3D models created by his grant discoverable for anyone seeking to utilize them as teaching/learning objects for geology instruction.

This talk will discuss the dilemma faced by the object’s hosting and discovery needs that followed. Discoverability via the library and maintaining object manipulability were both seen as …

Bridging Pure4egs And Digital Commons: Streamlining Our Faculty Open Access Ir Workflow, Jessea Young 2026 Loyola Marymount University

Bridging Pure4egs And Digital Commons: Streamlining Our Faculty Open Access Ir Workflow, Jessea Young

Librarian Publications & Presentations

In Spring 2024, Loyola Marymount University’s William H. Hannon Library transitioned from Expert Gallery Suite (EGS) – SelectedWorks to Pure4EGS, a “light” version of Pure for EGS customers. Since the implementation of our Pure4EGS instance, Scholars @ LMU, we have harvested citations from the research management system to quickly identify open access articles for inclusion in Digital Commons. Our new workflow has allowed us to focus more on other scholarly communications services—such as assistance in outreach to our research institutions and centers, transformative agreements, and open access journal management—rather than copyright and data entry work for Digital Commons @ Loyola …

It's Your Repository, Too: Encouraging Campus-Wide Ownership Through A Distributed Workflow, Amanda Makula, Michael Conlee 2026 University of San Diego

It's Your Repository, Too: Encouraging Campus-Wide Ownership Through A Distributed Workflow, Amanda Makula, Michael Conlee

Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship

One major advantage of Digital Commons is that it's more than just software -- it's also service. Having a dedicated consultant allows institutions with limited IR staffing to enlist their consultant in helping to train other units across campus how to use the system to their maximum benefit. This not only helps to distribute the workload, it also encourages buy-in and a sense of ownership by the campus partners, so that they are invested in the vibrancy and impact of the repository.

At the University of San Diego, as we conducted more and more outreach to engage a variety of …

Black Women Library Leaders: Challenges And Considerations For Inclusive Advocacy, Aisha Johnson, Shaundra Walker, Tamika Barnes, Tina D. Rollins 2026 Georgia Institute of Technology

Black Women Library Leaders: Challenges And Considerations For Inclusive Advocacy, Aisha Johnson, Shaundra Walker, Tamika Barnes, Tina D. Rollins

Library Faculty Scholarship

Black women leaders face unlimited challenges navigating the complex landscape of leadership, balancing race and gender dynamics that often intersect to create unique obstacles. The intersectionality of our identities compounds the hurdles we encounter, making our leadership journey particularly challenging. Research indicates that Black women leaders frequently grapple with systemic racism and gender bias in both professional and societal spheres.1 Additionally, we encounter stereotypes and preconceived notions that affect perceptions of our competence and authority.2 We strive to break through the glass ceiling while confronting structural barriers and limited representation at executive levels, exacerbating an uphill climb.3 The impact of …

Beyond The Stacks: Borrowing Of Immersive Technologies And Smart Eco Systems To Reimagine Libraries., Vuppala Lingaiah

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This theoretical Chapter explores the paradigm shift of knowledge access, user experience, and institutional viability through the integration of immersive technologies, such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT), within the new paradigm of funky libraries, and how these technologies are changing knowledge access, user experiences, and the institutional sustainability of various library environments. Methodology: The research approach is non-empirical and exploratory-conceptual, based on a synthesis of systematic literature, thematic clustering of the existing literature, and theoretical critique of recent peer-reviewed findings. The chapter is based on more …

Spiral: Communicating Using Climate Change Information, Lauralynn Montefrio Corrales, Joyce Claire Lau, Tamanna Sahoo

SPIRaL Undergraduate Research Projects

Our study highlights the importance of information literacy, specifically utilizing information about climate change. This study used a qualitative research framework that examined Purdue students who are highly engaged in talking about climate change information with others. Participants were identified through a screening questionnaire designed to assess levels of engagement with climate change information; the questionnaire was then utilized to sample participants, identifying those who confidently identified as being very engaged with climate change information. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with selected participants to obtain a thorough perspective of their experiences and viewpoints. Within each of these interviews, open-ended questions inquired …

From Slides To Chatbots: Ontology-Driven Pedagogical Knowledge Graphs, Zhenghao Xu, Boyang Wu, Aishani Sakalabhaktula, Anya Chauhan

Information Studies Undergraduate Works

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) combined with Large Language Models (LLM) is increasingly used to develop conversational educational chatbots. However, general-purpose LLMs, even when augmented with standard RAG pipelines, lack the structural grounding needed for educational contexts and may produce responses that exceed course scope, misinterpret student queries, or generate hallucinated content. To address these limitations, we propose a system that integrates Knowledge Graphs (KGs), RAG, and LLMs to build a reliable, explainable, and personalized learning assistant. By grounding responses in a well-defined KG, our system keeps answers aligned with lecture content while reducing hallucination. The graph structure provides inherent explainability, and …

From Books To Justice: Public Libraries Strengthening Legal Access Across Kansas, Lauren J. Franks, Ziwei Qi 2026 Fort Hays State University

From Books To Justice: Public Libraries Strengthening Legal Access Across Kansas, Lauren J. Franks, Ziwei Qi

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Legal self-help centers across Kansas allow access to legal information for self-represented litigants in civil court cases. However, there is a lack of these centers in rural areas. In areas where this resource does not exist, libraries, which already serve as a trusted community-centered hub, can help provide legal information and resources. This project aims to identify best practices in increasing access to legal information and survey key staff including self-help center staff, court staff such as court clerks and judges, and librarians, to help inform our integration of legal self-help services into public libraries. By executing a short anonymous …
