The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the benefits of digital video to communicate and preserve scholarly work. This study asks the question: How can digital video benefit communication and scholarly work? Combining both visuals and audio, digital video has become a unique educational tool between scholars and students alike to communicate, teach, and learn. As technology advances, the creation, preservation, and viewing of digital video continues to increase; however, so do the challenges that arise as a result. Library Faculty Research and Publications
Many institutional repositories (IRs) provide open access to published work. The authors of those works typically transfer copyright or exclusive distribution rights for their work to their publisher. This means the author cannot themselves grant permission for deposit in the IR; rather permissions must be secured from the publisher. In Fall 2009, the authors conducted a survey of institutional repository managers to gain a clearer understanding of the staffing, resources, activities and tools employed to clear copyright for published work, with the intent to deposit into an IR. This poster summarizes preliminary findings.

Foreign Languages In Academic Librarianship: A Survey Of Skills, Use, And Perceptions, Brian Vetruba

No comprehensive study of academic librarians’ attitudes and perceptions toward foreign language skills in libraries has occurred. Similarly, the question of how librarians use foreign languages has only been cursorily examined. The authors conducted an online survey in the spring of 2007 asking academic librarians in the US and Canada about their knowledge of non—English languages, use of languages professionally, and the perceived value of language skills. Results indicate substantial use of and value placed on language skills. Of the 1,858 respondents, more than 25 percent reported using foreign languages daily and over 75 percent desire better language skills to …
