This paper is a qualitative case study of the role of culture in the information-seeking process. This study revealed that culture does affect how we locate, evaluate and value information and thus specific kinds of knowledge. Librarians and educators must engage in discussions on “Critical Information Literacy” where information is tied to knowledge creation that does not limit learners to a specific cultural worldview. Information and information-seeking processes cannot be separated from knowledge production

Situated Practices Of Information Use And Representation: An Ethnographic Study Of A Web Design Project For Boys, Kristen Rebmann
Faculty Publications
This article explores the production practices employed by children building personal webpages in a semi-structured afterschool program: the Fifth Dimension (5D). Following a critical Multiliteracies (CritMLs) approach to learning design, this ethnographic study introduced web-building practices to the children of the 5D and followed their production of personal webpages over a 9 month period. By structuring the intervention this way, it was possible to simultaneously observe the development of both the webpage as artifact as well as the child-participant. Along these lines, the study describes the unique and particular social contexts from which personal webpages emerge and develop over time. …

Staff publications, research, and presentations
Tucked in the northwest farmlands of Indiana in West Lafayette, Purdue University is recognized as one of the nation’s leading science and mathematics research universities. Spring rainstorms and a packed agenda greeted the 2008–2010 ARL Diversity Scholars when we visited the libraries April 20–21, 2009. Purdue University staff, librarians, and Library Dean James Mullins planned an exceptional program of guided discussions, presentations, and tours of the campus libraries. The team also offered an inside view of the institution’s libraries and a fresh vision for how librarians can place themselves in the daily workings of campus communities.

The Sem. Bot. (Seminarium Botanicum or Botanical Seminar) began in 1886 as an association of seven students (two Juniors, two Sophomores, and three Freshmen) at the University of Nebraska. They collected plants, campaigned against the “Lits and Philistines” (literary and classical studies), and controlled the Science Club and several debating societies. “Show me a Lit” was their rallying cry. Charles Bessey was a force in organizing and developing the Sem. Bot.

Libraries have opportunities to enhance traditional library services with iPhones. Searching the iTunes store for relevant apps adaptable or targeted for library use is cumbersome. In the past, librarians have highlighted their resources by developing significant annotated bibliographies and subject guides for their users. The presenters have begun using the program, LibGuides, to produce an appography (annotated subject driven bibliography) that guides users to helpful apps from the iTunes store. We anticipate appographies will be the bibliographies of the 21st century.
