In 2009, the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) charged a task force to update and revise recommendations that address cataloging practice and catalog access to electronic resources for libraries participating in the I-Share union catalog. This article presents the results of a survey and recommendations developed by the 2009 Task Force that cover all types of e-resources. The United States federal government publications were little known and underutilized in the majority of the OPAL (Ohio Private Academic Libraries) depository libraries, as the majority of the collections were not in the online catalog before 1998. The limited financial and human resources of these small academic libraries demanded effective collaboration among the libraries, the commercial vendors and service providers, the local administrations, and the library staff members to automate the collection. However, making collaboration work at operational and strategic levels can be a daunting management challenge.

Creating Collections Through Collaboration: An Innovative Digital Library Project In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Laurie Kutner, Cindy Dykes, Stefanie Havelka

The proposed presentation will focus on a successful cross-cultural and cross-institutional collaborative model, involving four institutions, that was developed to create digital library collections of research-based information generated in the Monteverde Zone in Costa Rica. Addressing a need for the Monteverde community to have easy access to locally-produced research-based information, the digital collections contain unpublished research documents produced by area international study programs focusing on local sustainable community development, community health, and tropical ecology.

This article discusses the barriers that exist between library bibliographic data and other data available on the World Wide Web. The isolation of this bibliographic data is a problem that impacts on the successful integration of the library catalogue into the potential semantic Web of the future.
