Essays On Education And Crime, Swarup Joshi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Education is considered one of the most important tools for success in the labor market. The benefits of education extend to multiple other externalities. However, access to education is not universal even within the same school, county, and state. This dissertation includes three different essays which looks at the literature on intervention programs, an intervention program to increase access to post secondary education, and impact of education on crime. The first chapter investigates the literature on intervention programs, their costs and impacts. It also discusses the literature connecting education and crime. The second chapter details the intervention program studied in …

Producer Services: A Hub For Stem And An Engine For Job Growth, Eric Thompson, Uyen Tran
Business in Nebraska
The producer services sector, which includes professional and technical services such as accounting, engineering, computer programming, advertising and consulting, is the fastest growing, high-wage segment of the U.S. economy. Producer services employment grew by 15 percent nationwide from 2008 through 2017 but only by 5 percent in Nebraska. Nebraska growth lagged the nation in part because the state has smaller metropolitan areas. Producer service businesses tend to congregate in larger cities. To grasp more opportunities in this growing, high wage sector, Nebraska needs to train more workers in STEM occupations, encourage the development of small businesses in the sector, and …

"Baby Factories": Exploitation Of Women In Southern Nigeria, Jacinta Chiamaka Nwaka, Akachi Odoemene
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
Despite the writings of feminist thinkers and efforts of other advocates of feminism to change the dominant narratives on women, exploitation of women is a fact that has remained endemic in various parts of the world, and particularly in Africa. Nigeria is one of those countries in Africa where women are largely exposed to varying degrees of exploitation. This paper examines the development and proliferation of baby-selling centers in southern Nigeria and its impacts on and implication for women in Nigeria. It demonstrates how an attempt to give protection to unwed pregnant girls has metamorphosed into “baby harvesting” and selling …

Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) rose by 1.00% during January of 2019. The increase in the LEI-N, which is designed to predict economic activity six months into the future, implies solid economic growth in Nebraska into the third quarter of 2019. Strong business expectations were the primary reason for the increase in the leading indicator. Respondents to the January Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans to increase both sales and employment at their businesses over the next six months. The value of the U.S. dollar also dropped in January for the first time in a year, providing relief …

Trends And Tariffs: Nebraska In An Aging Recovery, Eric Thompson
Business in Nebraska
Nebraska will record solid economic growth during the forecast period but will lag U.S. growth. Nebraska’s large farming sector is struggling and will not contribute much to economic growth during the forecast period. Job growth also will be sluggish in transportation and retail trade. Job growth, however, will be stronger in the services, finance, manufacturing and construction. Projected growth rates for 2019 to 2021 are presented in Table 1.
Employment will grow by 0.7% to 0.9% per year, below the national rate. Nonfarm income will grow between 4.4% and 4.5% each year. This growth readily exceeds inflation and population growth, …

Optimal Climate Policy And The Future Of World Economic Development, Mark Budolfson, Francis Dennig, Marc Fleurbaey, Noah Scovronick, Asher Siebert, Dean Spears, Fabian Wagner
Journal Articles
How much should the present generations sacrifice to reduce emissions today, in order to reduce the future harms of climate change? Within climate economics, debate on this question has been focused on so-called "ethical parameters" of social time preference and inequality aversion. We show that optimal climate policy similarly importantly depends on the future of the developing world. In particular, although global poverty is falling and the economic lives of the poor are improving worldwide, leading models of climate economics may be too optimistic about two central predictions: future population growth in poor countries, and future convergence in total factor …

The Costs Of Obtaining Environmental Outcomes Through Coastal Habitat Restoration, Shea Gould, Matthew G. Interis
Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics
Studies examining the costs of coastal habitat restoration have focused on the cost per acre of restoration or on cost efficiency of various restoration methods. On the other hand, studies examining the benefits of restoration have focused on various ecosystem services that more directly affect welfare including amenity value, storm protection, nutrient retention and biodiversity. We examine a set of 133 Gulf of Mexico coastal habitat restoration projects to estimate the cost of obtaining average annual habitat units (AAHUs), a measure which captures the quantity and, importantly, quality of habitat restored, which is one of the more direct ecosystem service …

Structural Change, Productivity, And The Shift To Services: The Case Of Indonesia, Nabil Rizky Ryandiansyah
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
Since Chenery & Syrquin (1975), the pattern of transition from agriculture-heavy economies to industry and then later to services has been central to growth literatures. But recent empirical works have casted doubts on whether developing countries are able to follow the same path. This paper analyzes whether structural change in Indonesia has been productivity-enhancing. This paper finds that structural change from 1998-2014 has not been able to generate impact on economy-wide productivity. This paper also explores possible determinants of the direction of structural change. This paper does not find commodity dependence nor human capital to have clear association with low …

The pre (GFC) period used in this study is between January 2003 and July 2007, whereas the post GFC is between August 2007 and December 2016. The results of this study are …

Financial Development And Income Inequality In Indonesia: A Sub-National Level Analysis, Harry Aginta
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
This study constructs financial inclusion indicator and analyzes the link of financial inclusion and income inequality for 33 provinces in Indonesia. By using Fixed Effect Panel Model, we find financial inclusion appears to have insignificant effect to on inequality at national level. While at sub-national level, adding other variables such as GRDP, years of schooling, and trade openness, we find financial inclusion appears to have negative and significant impact on income inequality in manufacture and mining-based provinces, not in agriculture-based. The results suggest that financial inclusion helps to lower income inequality when economic condition encourage people to utilize financial access …

This paper examines the effects of corruption on the inflow of FDI in ASEAN-5 countries by controlling twomacroeconomic variables namely Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and inflation. Using a static panel dataestimation, the results show the significant relationship between corruption and Gross Domestic Product(GDP) on the inflow of FDI in ASEAN-5. This results indicate that less corrupted countries and largermarket size would attract more FDI inflows.
