Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The LEI-N fell by 0.12% in October 2022. The leading indicator, which is designed to predict economic growth six months in the future, has fallen in four of the last six months. Such a decline signals a stagnant economy in Nebraska at the beginning of 2023. Four components of the leading indicator worsened during October. There was an increase in initial claims for unemployment insurance, signaling some softening of the Nebraska labor market. There was also an increase in the value of the U.S. Dollar in October. A rising dollar creates challenges for Nebraska businesses that compete in international markets. …

One of the main reasons for the flooding due to torrential rains this time around rather – than the river levels rising –was that the national waterways have been encroached, the capacity of drainage system such as LBOD was limited and outlets to traditional drains leading to the sea were not functional, desilting of canals had not taken place and repair and maintenance of bund embankments were neglected. On top of the adverse global and national developments in a post-pandemic world, Sindh and Balochistan got severely hit by extraordinary torrential rains in a short interval of time. During this time, the average rainfall received was 1100 mm — five times the normal. According to the Sindh chief minister, flooding from Balochistan amounted to 120 maf of flood water equivalent to the capacity of multiple Tarbela Dams. The dysfunctional or nonexistent drainage system contributed to the miseries of the people as large swathes of land on both the left and right bank are still inundated. Sindh has a population of around 50 million. There is an equal division – 52 per cent live in urban areas while 48 per cent in rural areas and around 38 per cent of them derive their livelihoods from agriculture, livestock, forestry and fishing. The organized manufacturing sector and services have little presence in the rural areas and much of what exists primarily caters to the needs of the rural population. Midwestern Farm and Producer Surveys and Policy Briefs

From July to September 2021, researchers at South Dakota State University carried out a survey of producers in the Midwest to understand producers’ views and use of conservation farming and precision technology. To further understand how the input market supply volatilities has affected Midwest farmers' decisions and their potential adjustments to the current market situation, we carried out a re-survey in 2022 with the 1,119 respondents to the 2021 Midwestern survey. The participants of the survey were contacted in four separate rounds in line with the modified Tailored Design Method.

Using Satellite-Observed Geospatial Inundation Data To Identify The Impacts Of Flood On Firm-Level Performances: The Case Of China During 2000–2009, Pao-Li Chang, Fan Zheng

Among the first in the literature, this paper combines high-resolution satelliteobserved inundation maps with geocoded firm-level data to identify the flood exposure at the firm level. We apply the methodology to study the impact of floods on microlevel firm performances in China for the period 2000–2009. Being hit by a flood is associated with an annual loss of output and productivity of around 6% and 5%, respectively, which persists in the long run. The effects are heterogeneous across types of firms and locations of the floods. Firms that are tangible-asset intensive are more negatively affected by the flood events. Meanwhile, …

While the literature supports sports tourism as an effective economic development strategy, small to medium-sized rural communities often do not have the resources to promote mega sports events. This paper presents estimates of the 44^th Annual Racer Roundup College Rodeo’s economic impact. Instead of the traditional recruitment of teachers the government is engaging a private sector provider (PSP) through an open competitive process for imparting digital learning at 34 selected schools to begin with. This paper studies the response of agricultural production to rural labor loss during the process of urbanization. Using household microdata from India and exogenous variation in migration induced by urban income shocks interacted with distance to cities, we document sharp declines in crop production among migrant-sending households residing near cities. Households with migration opportunities do not substitute agricultural labour with capital, nor do they adopt new agricultural machinery. Instead, they divest from agriculture altogether and cultivate less land. We use a two-sector general equilibrium model with crop and land markets to trace the ensuing spatial reorganization of agriculture. Other non-migrant …
