The Correlation Of Monetary Policy, Inflation And Stock Returns During Periods Of Inflation And Deflation, Jason Megaro 2010 Bryant University

The Correlation Of Monetary Policy, Inflation And Stock Returns During Periods Of Inflation And Deflation, Jason Megaro

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper examines the debated issue of the existence of a relationship between a country’s monetary policy and the relative stock market and stock returns. Specifically, the paper examines the affect and correlation of overnight interest rate (known as federal funds rate in U.S.), inflationary rate and stock returns on and with each other, respectively, during periods of inflation and deflation. The deflationary period investigated is the period of deflation in Japan and the inflationary period examined is over the last decade in the United States. The analysis is performed using multivariate VAR/VEC co-integrating specifications to supplement the results from …

Determinants Of Female Labor Force Participation In United States, Dongni Wan 2010 Bryant University

Determinants Of Female Labor Force Participation In United States, Dongni Wan

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper is trying to discover the determinants of female labor force participation in United States from the year 2000 to 2009. The study contains over 1 million observations through-out the 4 business cycles and the household data from Current Population Survey (CPS) suggested that female labor force participation in the United States was influenced by several factors, namely, educational attainment, family income, marital status, age, race, number of children in the household. Women with higher education level and from wealthier households have a greater tendency of joining the labor force while those with only high school or lower degree …

Energy Consumption, Fdi, Government Effectiveness Economic Growth., Aaron Borges 2010 Bryant University

Energy Consumption, Fdi, Government Effectiveness Economic Growth., Aaron Borges

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

The availability of energy is essential in initiating and sustaining economic growth. FDI has also been positively linked to economic growth although some argue that economic growth promotes FDI. Studies examining the government effectiveness of nations have suggested FDI is more effective and energy resources are used more effectively when a country has solid governance. While studies have examined these aforementioned macroeconomic issues, there is no empirical study that examines all these variants within the same model. This paper investigates these factors and their effect on economic growth throughout 50 nations for the year of 2005. Economic growth is calculated …

Central Bank Independence: Rules, Practices, And Outcomes, Douglas Aaron Block 2010 University of Texas at El Paso

Central Bank Independence: Rules, Practices, And Outcomes, Douglas Aaron Block

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In recent years interest has grown in central bank independence as research has shown that it may affect many important financial issues such as unemployment, inflation, and inflation variability, among others. However, empirical evidence regarding its effect has been inconclusive and there is low correlation among various legal central bank independence measures. In this thesis, I attempt to resolve these problems by generating a new measure of legal central bank independence that takes into account divergence between laws and practices. I then measure the impact that democracy and proportional electoral systems have on reducing this divergence and find that democracy …

(Wp 2009-02) Exchange-Rate Pass Through, Openness, And The Sacrifice Ratio, Joseph P. Daniels, David D. Vanhoose

Economics Working Papers

Considerable recent work has reached mixed conclusions about whether and how globalization affects the inflation‐output trade‐off and suggests that the ultimate effect of openness on the output‐inflation relationship is influenced by a variety of factors. In this paper, we consider the impact of exchange‐rate pass through and how pass through conditions the effect of openness on the sacrifice ratio. We develop a simple theoretical model showing how both the extent of pass through and openness can interact to influence the output‐inflation relationship. Next we empirically explore the nature of these two variables and their interaction. Results indicate that greater pass …

Wind Power In Nevada, Hamedah Dhalai 2010 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Wind Power In Nevada, Hamedah Dhalai

Brookings Mountain West Publications

This bibliography compiles scholarly information and new reports on the topic of wind power in Nevada. As a senior at UNLV majoring in both Economics and French, I began this project in June 2010 in consultation with William E. Brown, Jr., director of planning and communications at Brookings Mountain West. This research topic interests me greatly, and I believe that expanded research and commercial development of alternative energy, including wind power, is essential to the growth and development of Nevada. My service as a Student Ambassador in the College of Business, a position that allows me to represent UNLV to …

Scottish Enlightenment And Public Governance Of The Economic System, Maria Pia Paganelli 2010 Trinity University

Scottish Enlightenment And Public Governance Of The Economic System, Maria Pia Paganelli

Economics Faculty Research

This paper questions the idea that natural, in the natural system of liberty Adam Smith describes, means inevitable, normal, or perfect. For Smith, what is natural in a natural system that governs the economy seems to be a normative prescription.

The Moralizing Distance In Adam Smith: The Theory Of Moral Sentiments As Possible Praise Of Commerce, Maria Pia Paganelli 2010 Trinity University

The Moralizing Distance In Adam Smith: The Theory Of Moral Sentiments As Possible Praise Of Commerce, Maria Pia Paganelli

Economics Faculty Research

The Theory of Moral Sentiments can be read as a book praising commerce. In The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Adam Smith claims that viewing oneself from a distance decreases the natural tendency toward self-deception and increases the propriety of one’s behavior. In front of strangers and distant acquaintances, an individual would generally restrain the more self-indulgent and excessive passions and be more composed than in front of family and close friends. Frequent exposure to strangers fosters the habit of propriety - the base of moral behavior. Commerce enlarges one’s opportunities to interact with strangers and introduces distance in interpersonal relationships. …

Mapping Energy Poverty In Huntington, West Virginia, Elizabeth Anne Callicoat 2010 Marshall University

Mapping Energy Poverty In Huntington, West Virginia, Elizabeth Anne Callicoat

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Energy poverty is a growing phenomenon culminating from the combination of low to mid household income, deteriorating housing structures and rising household energy costs. Energy prices are increasing for all households, but the burden is proportionally larger for those with low to mid income. These groups must sacrifice to afford energy and are often unable or do not have the autonomy to make structural improvements, especially if they rent their home. Data on residential dwellings from the Cabell County Tax Assessor? Office were used within a geographic information system to map where energy poverty likely exists within the city limits …

Intellectual Property And Antitrust Limits On Contract: Comment, Matthew J. Holian, Neil Nguyen

Faculty Publications

In their chapter in Dynamic Competition and Public Policy (2001, Cambridge University Press), Burtis and Kobayashi never defined their model's discount rate, making replicating their simulation results difficult. Through our own simulations, we were able to verify their results when using a discount rate of 0.10. We also identified two new types of equilibria that the authors overlooked, doubling the number of distinct equilibria in the model.
