Mega sporting events have faced increased scrutiny in recent decades for their negative economic impacts, externalities, and environmental effects. As multimillion dollar stadiums lay abandoned and future host city bids are withdrawn as public opinion on mega sporting events worsens with time, economists, governing bodies, and sports fans worry about the future locations of these massive sports festivals. The first chapter of this dissertation studies the role of human capital in generating economic convergence through its impact on manufacturing productivity growth and allocation of labor across sectors of the economy. I confirm and extend existing results showing that productivity in manufacturing – unlike its economy-wide counterpart – has exhibited convergence; that is, countries further behind the technology frontier tend to catch up to those on the frontier. I then show that the convergence in manufacturing is (a) somewhat accelerated by countries’ tertiary education levels and (b) faster in high-tech industries. This dissertation is comprised of two essays on human capital. I analyze how early-life human capital boost shapes micro-level outcomes among disadvantaged children in the US. In the second chapter, I study the productivity convergence among OECD countries and evaluate to what extent the labor force’s sectoral allocation (due to different human capital profiles across countries) contributes to it. In the first chapter, which is joint work with Jorge Garc´ia and William Dougan, we analyze a large-scale trial of an early-childhood education program targeting premature, low-birthweight children, thereby oversampling twins. Public health insurance programs like Medicare and Medicaid have been shown to help reduce household debt caused by healthcare costs. The impact of health insurance literacy makes the relationship between public health programs and debt more ambiguous. The increasing complexity of Medicare raises the question of whether cost savings associated with enrollment might be mitigated by the complexity of choosing the ideal plan for those with low health insurance literacy. In the two years since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the landscape for work has shifted dramatically. Many companies and employers switched to telework when the pandemic hit, and many still do not require workers to come into the office. Research suggests these COVID-induced changes have led to a closing of the gap in childcare duties between men and women in households. The intensity of the use of machinery and implements by large farmers is one of the factors responsible for the wide differential in the productivity attained on their farms compared to that on small farms. A number of agritech companies have sprung up in the country but they are also mostly catering to the well-to-do and educated farmers, thus causing anxiety that this will further widen the productivity gap.

At present, the canal irrigation management system recovers only a quarter of its repair and maintenance costs. In the 1970s, the entire cost was recovered by these water charges called ‘abiana’. The present average rate of surface water charges per acre is only one-fourth of what the farmer pays for tube wells and so it is not the ability to pay constraint. Although hosting professional sports are often seen as a financial benefit for cities, there are also associated costs. This paper investigates the possibility of interdependence between a variety of crimes and home game days of the Boston Red Sox. When adjusting for game attendance and length, minor assaults charges such as disorderly conduct and simple assault increase city-wide during game days. Despite this, all crime around the immediate stadium area decreases in volume. Additionally, this study examines differences in geographical impacts and crime levels, when a game was played, and games played against the New York Yankees, their historic rival.

This paper presents an empirical analysis of how income, education and healthcare affect overall happiness in a country. By using data found through the world happiness report, Statista and the world population review, I was able to analyze the relationship between these three variables and the overall happiness index from 100 counties. This paper investigates the effects of education amongst other factors on income inequality in Europe. This study examines if countries who have higher educational attainment have lower income inequality or if having higher educational attainment has no effect on income inequality. The study will include data from several European countries over two different time periods and the results will then be compared at a country level and at an overall level to see how education affects income inequality. This study used linear regression analysis to inspect influence of unemployment rates and economic development levels on income inequality in the United States and Germany. The results indicate that the level of economic development is the main driving factor for inequality of income in America, while in Germany, high unemployment and inflation can exacerbate income inequality. This study emphasizes the importance of labor market policies, social welfare policies, and tax policies in reducing income inequality. This research paper examines the impact of specific crime types on property values in urban areas. Using a dataset of property sales and crime data from several cities in Massachusetts, a regression analysis is applied to estimate the effect of different crime types on property values. Our findings suggest that certain types of crime, such as violent crimes and drug-related offenses, have a significant negative impact on property values, while other types of crime, such as property crimes and white-collar crimes, have a relatively small effect on property values.
