Following America’s “War on Terror,” al-Qaeda and its affiliates became highly decentralized in terms of organizational and media operations. Though mass media outlets continue to play a significant role in drawing attention to al-Qaeda’s transnational campaign, Salafi Jihadists have recently begun to rely on new media for purposes of legitimization and promotion. The Internet serves as a suitable platform for these groups’ media objectives since it is inherently anonymous and absent of censorship. In the midst of the socially turbulent 1960s, the underground press movement in America sought to restore journalism and report on issues that the rising youth and New Left believed were important. Many believed these newspapers were subversive because of the content and goals of their publications, which drove their creators "underground". Despite the political and social conservatism of West Michigan, the Grand Rapids area was not exempt from the underground press movement. Several underground newspapers, discovered in the Grand Rapids Public Library's archives, provide an account of the local contribution to this national context, specifically in The Root.

The Politics of HPV Vaccination Advocacy:

Effects of Source Expertise on Effectiveness of a Pro-Vaccine Message

Persistent public resistance to an apparently safe, effective and life-saving public health practice such as HPV vaccination illustrates a significant issue in the communication of behavioral recommendations based on evidence-based scientific data and consensus views of scientific and medical experts. This study examines the influence of source expertise on pro-HPV-vaccine advocacy messaging effectiveness among audiences of differing political ideologies. The findings support prior research indicating greater resistance to HPV vaccination among political conservatives. The CW network series Supernatural (2005–) draws its text from the horror and fantasy genres as well as religious mythology. Concurrently, it transmits a core “American” mythos. As its protagonists keep watch along a supernatural frontier and eradicate threats to the American way of life, this program both reinforces and alters aspects of the frontier myth and the myth of American exceptionalism by depicting its main characters as representations of America writ large whose mission has grown from an appointment by God to being equals to God.

The 2010-11 Tunisian revolution brought to the forefront of the country an explosion of activism and organizing from civil society, including multiple voices urging for the defense, protection and/or recognition of Tunisian ‘minorities.’ An unprecedented Amazigh (pl. East Asian television dramas from Japan, Taiwan and South Korea have become a significant part of the cultural globalization process in the Indonesian mediascapes since the 1990s. The Indonesian cultural, political and social specificities have created significant distinctions on how these television dramas reconstruct the shared imagination of (East) Asia in comparison with how it is in other locales. The research findings have extended the discussion of geocultural/linguistic regions, which argues that the success of a television drama in one region, for example telenovelas in Latin America, is affected by a similar cultural and linguistic background. Studi ini membahas pemaknaan khalayak media berbasis komunitas interpretif; sebuah konsep yang menekankan pada pemaknaan media secara kolektif serta pengaruh konteks sosial budaya dalam strategi pemaknaan. Dengan menggunakan konsep tersebut, penelitian ini mengangkat topik pemaknaan fiksi gay romantis di antara pembaca perempuan lajang. Penelitian ini adalah studi kualitatif dengan paradigma konstruktionisme sosial dan menggunakan fokus grup diskusi sebagai metode pengambilan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa fiksi gay romantis menjadi alternatif bacaan akibat ketidakpuasan terhadap representasi perempuan pada media baca lain. Profesi jurnalis media online menuntut profesionalisme sebagaimana tertuang dalam kode etik jurnalistik 2011, UU Pers No 40 Tahun 1999 dan Pedoman Pemberitaan Media Siber 2012. Peneliti mengamati berita sebagai karya jurnalistik sekaligus sebagai bukti untuk menggambarkan kinerja profesional jurnalis dengan menerapkan teori deontologis sebagai pisau analisis penelitian. Metode dalam penelitian ini terfokus pada aspek semantik dan sintaktik terhadap 1149 berita asli dari tiga situs media online masing-masing, 362 berita Detik.com, 458 berita Kompas.com, 329 berita Republika.co.id sepanjang Juni 2014 hingga Mei 2017. Recognizing the importance of civic engagement to the health of local communities and the overall success of a democracy, this research sought to better understand the relationship between online media use and civic engagement. Specifically, the constructive potential of the social networking site Facebook was explored using the theoretical framework of communication infrastructure theory (CIT; Ball-Rokeach, Kim, & Matei, 2001). Results of a cross-sectional survey with a national sample of 375 participants indicated that Facebook does hold potential for civic engagement. A study was conducted to examine how the persuasive elements of a message contribute to non-profit organizations’ potential to gain financial support. The purpose of the study was to apply theories of persuasion to advance an understanding of the underlying elements relevant to successful fundraising appeals. The two main constructs examined were credibility and psychological consistency. The theory of motivated reasoning predicts that partisan cues in the media will affect political attitudes, by encouraging individuals to align their views with those of their party's elites. The effect has primarily been tested by looking at issues which have pre-established partisan positions (e.g. immigration reform, gay rights, etc.). This study looks at the effects of partisan cues in the media on attitudes toward a non-partisan issue, the NSA's collection of American's meta-data.
