"Blessed Be The Critics Of Newspapers": Journalistic Criticism Of Journalism 1865-1930, Yasmine Tarek Dabbous
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study examined journalistic press criticism between 1865 and 1930. It sought to understand how the first modern journalists conceived of their profession in a period of great transitions. As the study revealed, journalists writing about journalism between 1865 and 1930 discussed recurring themes such as commercialization, sensationalism, advertising, and ethics. They expressed ambivalence toward the rise of big business in their field and the consequences it could have on the quality of the work. In the process, journalists also defined journalism as a profession providing a public service or as a business aiming solely for circulation and profit. Definitions …

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Consumer culture has long presented ethical issues for the academic world. As the nature and processes of consumer culture have become more integrated with the operation of universities, the debate has escalated. Over the past 15 years, institutions have made increasing use of sophisticated marketing techniques and, while many administrators applaud their use to define, grow, and protect a school’s reputation, many critics have decried what they see as nothing more than crass commercialism. This study is an examination of the development of consumer culture after World War II, when large numbers of students entered post-secondary school. Critical analysis is …

Method And Madness At The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Gretchen Stein Rhodes
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Isabella Stewart Gardner museum in Boston, Massachusetts is unique in history and design. Originating as a privately held collection, the Gardner Museum reflects its namesake’s eccentricities and stands in stark contrast to the backdrop of contemporary Boston. Although much has been written about the individual masterpieces held within the Gardner collection and there are numerous biographies of “Mrs. Jack,” as Gardner was sometimes called, little work has been done to investigate the museum in light of contemporary research in museology and the practices of collecting and display. Understanding collecting and curating as modes of knowledge production, this study seeks …

The findings indicate that online consumer product reviews perform better than online expert product reviews and no product reviews. Online product reviews affected visitors to a web site with …

American youth and adolescents have the highest rate of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections in the industrialized world. Data was analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM), multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), t-tests and correlations. Results indicated that individuals reporting high levels of social attraction also reported having greater self-disclosure with their latest added Facebook friend, exclusive Facebook friend and an exclusive face-to-face friend. Mr. Monk And The Emotion-Reason Dilemma, E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D.
Communications: Faculty Publications
Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) belongs to a tradition of brilliant but personally flawed detectives. Like others in this tradition, including his television colleague, Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie), Monk’s genius resides in his exceptional, even excessive, rationality. Both Monk and House embody near-perfect detection or diagnostic skills. And, in both cases, the cause of their damaged personalities is excessive emotionality, represented by their respective emotional disorders. In their internal dynamics, emotion is almost always the ‘problem,’ and both shows suggest that troubled emotionality is the price Monk and House must pay for their intense brilliance.
