For more than five years, U.S. radio broadcasters have devoted time and resources to marketing and promoting HD Radio technology to consumers and listeners. At the same time, broadcasters and other providers have developed applications for wired and wireless devices that allow listeners to experience radio and radio-like services from around the globe. This presentation examines the functionality and utility of HD Radio and online audio services, and explains why HD Radio continues to be a marginal technology.

This research investigates the effects of media on the interpersonal relationship expectations of television viewers. The study sought to better understand the implications of this topic in addition to determining whether one television program can affect the mindset of viewers. Through the use of an online survey, a focus group, a cultivation analysis of the television show Gossip Girl, as well as an analysis of the show’s fan pages this research discovered that television viewing has an impact on viewer expectations of relationships (as well as a general desire for themes within television programs in reality). The following essay examines the concentration of ownership that is present in current day Chilean written media. Two companies, Consorcio Periodístico de Chile S.A (Copesa) and El Mercurio, constitute a duopoly that easily dominates all other publications in terms of circulation and audience. The power of the duopoly began to grow starting with the military coup of 1973. During the turbulent times of the government of President Salvador Allende when the country was profoundly divided, La Tercera, the main publication of Copesa, and El Mercurio, the main publication of El Mercurio, were strong supporters of the military regime. One can hardly argue the impact that “The Daily Show” and “Colbert Report” have had on popular culture. But do these shows also hold an impact on journalism and political knowledge? In other words, are “The Daily Show” and “Colbert Report” reasonable sources of news? Media Representation Of The Disabled : A Critical Discourse Approach., Ang Pei Soo

This dissertation analyses the media representation of the social images of the disabled community in Malaysia using a critical discourse approach. It involves an analysis of 179 texts from a mainstream press, The Star, dated 1 July 2004 to 30 June 2005. Adopting Norman Fairclough’s 3-Dimensional framework (1995), the study examines the textual and intertextual features of texts. The former focuses on lexical choices namely euphemism, evaluative terms and metaphorical expressions; the latter reviews the inclusion of discourse representation and the texturing of charity discourse in news and articles published. Student Perceptions Of Digital Textbooks In A College Nursing Program, Alan D. Eno

The purpose of this research was to study the use of digital textbooks in a small liberal arts college. The research was a mixed methods descriptive study using a pre and post survey to determine student perceptions of the technology. Findings indicated that students needed training in the installation and use of digital textbooks. Findings also indicated the need for further research into what students understand about using digital textbooks. Recommendations are for the college to institute training sessions to teach students how to use the digital textbooks.

A Narrative Analysis Of Climate Change Coverage In The New York Times, 1988-2008: Social Responsibility And Weight-Of-Evidence Reporting, Valerie Marie Valentine

Drawing on narrative analysis, this study uncovers the metanarrative that served to structure the coverage of global warming as it appeared in The New York Times over a 20-year period. This analysis indicates that The New York Times used weight-of-evidence reporting over time to underpin the architecture of the metastory, in contrast to traditional objective reporting. Weight-of-evidence reporting is recommended as a method of incorporating the majority voice of science by de-emphasizing what is considered untrue, rather than giving it the same merit, while also documenting growing evidence. This finding is situated within the context of journalism ethics. The study …

News media have considerable ability to influence the public agenda. This thesis explores media agenda setting and framing in Hurricane Ike in order to infer whether the way disasters are covered in the news is a contributing factor in the lack of public attention on hurricane loss mitigation. The frequency and intensity of Atlantic hurricanes is increasing, placing residents along the U.S. Gulf Coast at greater risk, yet little has been done to try to reduce the impact from hurricanes.
