Meet Them Where They Gather: An Analysis Of Nasa’S Communications Approach For The 21st Century, Amanda D. Stein

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses

Since the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has been tasked with not only governing the United States’ space activities, but also sharing those efforts and subsequent findings with the American public. When President Barack Obama issued the Open Government Directive in 2009, NASA was well positioned to meet the objectives. Today, the administration has built one of the most successful web-based information-sharing presences by government agency, largely by tailoring communications efforts to reach the public on popular social media platforms. This paper will explore how NASA has utilized two-way symmetrical communications …

See You Later, Aggregator: How Hot News Misappropriation Deters Aggregators Without Overprotecting Facts, Wern Ai Tan

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses

As traditional media scramble to find ways to monetize online content, the ease of digital publishing and online dissemination of news have led to a rise of a new form of news media: News aggregators. News aggregators compile information from journalism websites by various means, often drawing potential readers away from traditional news outlets, thus siphoning off advertising revenue from traditional journalism outlets, with little to no cost to the aggregators. News establishments have sought legal redress by claiming copyright infringement and hot news misappropriation, a state unfair competition common law principle created in 1918. Hot news misappropriation prevents direct …

With his colleague, Carl Bernstein, Woodward set the standard for generations of investigative journalism in the U.S. and opened the eyes of Americans to the concentration of power in the presidency and its potential for corruption. Muting The Masses: Effects Of The Spiral Of Silence In The College Newsroom, Blaire Ritter

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Using data collected from classroom observations and student interviews, levels of involuntary and voluntary censorship and editorial control were examined to see if they played a role in classroom dynamic and editorial decisions. Each instance was looked at to see if it fit five criteria; a threat of isolation by peers or community, a fear of this threat, a willingness to speak out by the majority, a quasi-statistical sense …

Participants were put into 1 of 3 conditions — right-leaning advertisements, left-leaning advertisements, or neutral advertisements. They then answered questions about the perceived bias and credibility of the article and their own political affiliation. The researchers hypothesized that left-leaning individuals would perceive the article with right-leaning advertisements as biased …

Who Will Tell The Story? Terrorism's Relationship With The International News Media, Katherine Eugenis 2013 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Who Will Tell The Story? Terrorism's Relationship With The International News Media, Katherine Eugenis

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Terrorism feeds on an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. In order for a terrorist group to achieve its purpose, its activities must be known to a mass audience. Due to the often isolated nature of the conflicts in which they are involved, terrorists groups must attract and maintain the attention of the mass media, through which they access a broader audience and gain salience. This relationship begs the question: will less media attention lead to less terrorism as groups lose their audience and are forced to use legitimate means of enacting change? This thesis analyzes the pattern of media trends …

Narrative Medicine And Traditional Medical Interviewing Approaches In Women With Breast Cancer, Wendy L. Hine 2013 University of New Mexico

Narrative Medicine And Traditional Medical Interviewing Approaches In Women With Breast Cancer, Wendy L. Hine

Communication ETDs

Interactions between early-stage breast cancer patients and their medical providers were analyzed, focusing on the content of the medical encounter and the patients' subsequent recall of that information. Traditional biomedical interviewing, narrative medicine approaches, and emerging types of dialogue were coded within these encounters. Observations of patient-provider interactions, structured and semi-structured patient interviews, and document analysis enriched this investigation. No "pure type" of patient-provider interaction was found. In order to relate the complex information about diagnoses and treatment options to women with breast cancer, narrative interactions included considerable biomedical information. Similarly, biomedical interactions often included narrative elements. A continuum was …

Trust As An Ethical Construct In Community Based Participatory Research Partnerships., Julie Ermalinda Lucero

Communication ETDs

This study addressed the lack of attention to trust in Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) partnerships. CBPR is a promising research orientation to reduce health inequities in communities of color. This research orientation has been deemed an ethical and trust building approach to health research. However, this claim has not been empirically investigated. Specifically this investigation explored trust development as a process of ethical communication. Trust is important to all relationships and more attention to how trust develops is needed. In research relationships mistrust, which impacts CBPR, stems from historic events and institutional histories of collaboration. Trust and mistrust can …

A Program Of Attraction Rather Than Promotion: Encouraging Newcomers To Keep Coming Back, Miwa Kimura 2013 University of New Mexico

A Program Of Attraction Rather Than Promotion: Encouraging Newcomers To Keep Coming Back, Miwa Kimura

Communication ETDs

Studies regarding persuasion in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) have addressed what potentially increases newcomers early engagement with AA. This research regarding what seems persuasive to newcomers, however, reports researchers' rather than newcomers' perspective and standpoints. AA-related research from various fields suggests that AA is an effectiveness path for treating alcoholism, which untreated can have deadly outcomes. Understanding how early interactions and initial messages in AA persuade newly sober people to continue attending meetings may provide life-saving information to counseling staff, allied professionals, and members of AA. Given the importance of new-member persuasion to long-term recovery, this thesis explores newcomers' early experience …
