The Games Behind The Scenes: Newspaper Framing Of Female African American Olympic Athletes, Martin Reece Funderburk
Theses and Dissertations
Competing in and representing their country in the Olympic games is considered one of the greatest achievements for an athlete. From heroes such as Michael Jordan and the “Dream Team,” to Michael Phelps setting world record after record in the pool, Olympians are remembered as legends to those watching at home. How their amazing achievements at these Olympic games have been framed by the media though is another story. Newspapers have facilitated a platform for a qualitative content analysis on the framing of three female African American Olympic gold medalists that showed statistical significance in terms of the amount of …

In The Eye Of The Colonizer: The White Racial Frame Of Media Coverage On Hurricane Maria, María Manuela Méndez Da Silveira 19
Honor Scholar Theses
Hurricane Maria emphasized the need for journalism. It also demonstrated potential biases present in journalism. At the time that Hurricane Maria made landfall in 2017, I had worked as News Editor for my school's newspaper and interned at a business newspaper in Puerto Rico. The one thing consistently reiterated over and over again? "Objective reporting." Nationally, there is a lot of conversation of what counts as "fake news," a term made infamous by President Donald Trump. The implication in that conversation is that "good media" is unbiased media and therefore any media outlet that has bias is disregarded as "fake …

Comparative Summary by Peter Roudik, Director of Legal Research
This report examines the legal approaches of fifteen countries, representing all regions of the world, to the emerging problem of manipulation with “fake news” using mass and social media, especially the impact of fake news on ongoing political processes and elections, and the legislative measures undertaken to counteract the dissemination of false information. Fake news as a phenomenon is not new and has been known since ancient times, but the present-day proliferation of digital and social media platforms, which allow for much broader distribution of information to a global audience, makes …

Understanding how a migrant population is viewed and displayed by the host country has been a struggle for a long period of time for anyone studying migration. Traditional methods of collecting information were tedious, time intensive and expensive. However, Big data has been providing unique solutions to gaps in information in many different fields across the world. Seeing Every Corner Of Tangier: A Photographic Collection Going Beyond The Media Sphere, Cynthia J. Coleman
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Tangier is an iconic city, with an image recognized internationally. Its image is created, not only by the city itself, but by its representation in the media. That said, it is worth considering, how true to Tangier is its image? This study considers this issue by addressing the following question: how does the image of Tangier, as represented in photographs, compare with that portrayed in the media? To accomplish this, a collection of 18 photographs over the area of Tangier, an area of 44 square miles, was taken. The photos were taken to as objectively as possible represent the city …
Entre El Júbilo Y El Horror: Un Análisis De La Prensa Nacionalista Creada Por La Última Dictadura De Argentina Durante La Copa Mundial De 1978 Y Las Micro Resistencias En El Buenos Aires Herald / Between Jubilation And Horror: An Analysis Of The Nationalistic Press Created By The Last Dictatorship In Argentina During The 1978 World Cup And The Micro Resistances In The Buenos Aires Herald, Catherine Mathias
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This paper analyzes the nationalistic rhetoric used during the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. The dictatorship during this time heavily censored the press in order to maintain a favorable image, so, this paper will analyze three sources that supported the dictatorship and one that resisted the censorship instilled by the dictatorship. To achieve this analysis, I utilized various archives in Buenos Aires to find material from one newspaper and two magazines that supported the dictatorship: Clarín, Para Ti, and El Gráfico and articles from the newspaper, the Buenos Aires Herald, which continued to criticize the government despite intimidation. In this …
