Using The Theory Of Emotional Stakeholders To Experimentally Test The Influence Of Proxy Communicators About Organizational Crises In Digital News Reports, Alicia Mason, Elizabeth Spencer, Kelley Macek, Alison Smith, Stephanie Potter
Faculty Submissions
The emergence of new and social media has transformed the way that stakeholders and organizations interact between and amongst each other. Online news consumers are now able to directly respond to crisis news reports by offering their own interpretation, thus expanding the diversity of viewpoints audiences are exposed to (Carpenter, 2010; Springer, 2014). Using the Theory of Emotional Stakeholders framework our study aims (1) to understand how positive and negative user-generated comments in response to online news reports of crisis events impacts audience perceptions of organizational blame; (2) to examine the persuasive effects of user comments when expert or official …

Syrian Crisis Representation In The Media: The Cnn Effect, Framing, And Tone, Savannah S. Day
Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal
Over the past seven years of the Syrian Civil War, Syrian refugees have been painted in a negative light by news media outlets around the world. History of media coverage regarding global humanitarian crises shows that with various tools and processes, media can shape public opinion and policy in whichever direction it desires, and oftentimes policymakers and the public are quick, as well as emotional, to react. In this paper, my objectives are to analyze specific examples of this CNN Effect phenomena within news coverage of the Syrian refugee crisis, as well as generally explain the negatively correlating relationship between …

The Daily Orange, the independent newspaper of Syracuse, New York, has operated out of 744 Ostrom for more than 30 years. However, the paper will be moving to a new home in 2020 as Syracuse University uses the current space for new student housing. Following this development, The D.O. was in need of designed materials to create a campaign necessary to raise the hundreds of thousands of dollars moving will require. The motion work that resulted from my work on the campaign will be used on social media and The D.O.’s website to raise awareness of the paper’s need, as …

Student Journalists Fight To Protect First Amendment Rights On College Campuses, Joanna Orland
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This body of work sheds light on the obstacles student newspapers at public universities face while attempting to function as free presses. Public universities are protected by the First Amendment but some administrations take action to suppress those rights in their student journalists. Unfortunately, this trend has existed on college campuses for many years but the attitudes exhibited are increasingly paralleled by the relationship between the mainstream media and the current administration.
Universities will take measures such as cutting budgets, firing faculty advisers, denying open records requests and occasionally taking lawsuits against student publications to keep the truth from circulating. …

This thesis is an examination of the ethical use of artificial intelligence in journalism. Artificial intelligence is currently being used in all steps of the news production process: story discovery, story production and story distribution. Newsrooms utilize machine learning to analyze massive quantities of data and discover patterns that humans would normally never be able to pick up. Additionally, journalists also create templates so computers can write stories that are data-based, such as earning reports and game (sports) stories, and free them up to be able to work on other projects. Newsrooms can also use AI to personalize story recommendations …

Mango Media Collective: A Look Into South Asian Representation In Journalism, Aishwarya Sukesh
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Mango Media Collective is a collection of interviews from South Asian journalists that I’ve spoken to in the last two years. Each person is reflective of a changing and more inclusive industry. But their responses also prove that there is much more work to be done in regards to equity and inclusion. Culture doesn’t interfere — it bolsters, it elevates, and it can even humanize stories that are waiting to be told. More importantly, it makes telling certain stories that need to be told a possibility. But don’t take my word for it. I’ve interviewd 18 South Asians in the …

Reporting Poverty In Louisville : News Coverage Of Slum Clearance, La Salle Place, And College Court, 1934-1938., Shelby N Carter
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
This project examines poverty in news by analyzing reports on Louisville slum clearance, La Salle Place, and College Court public housing projects from November 1934 through February 1938 in the Courier-Journal, Louisville Herald-Post, and Louisville Leader newspapers. In contrast to current academic research, reports on issues related to poverty appeared regularly, portrayed the poor as deserving, and avoided intersecting poverty with issues of race or gender. However, in support of current academic research, coverage of poverty in Louisville neglected to discuss perpetual poverty and relied on elite sources for information. In the event of economic distress and federal intervention like …

Laughter, Discomfort, And The Mechanics Of Subversion: How Amy Schumer Uses Comedy And Performance To Change The Way We Think About Women A Thematic Analysis Of Amy Schumer, Stephanie Rosauri
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Amy Schumer earned a spot as the first woman ever on Forbes Top Ten Highest Paid Comedians List. This was a huge accomplishment but it begs the question why Schumer is the first. Past research on female comedians like Lucille Ball and Lily Tomlin illuminates how comedy can be used as a rhetorical device and highlights the importance of women in comedy. Through an in-depth thematic analysis of Schumer's movies Trainwreck (2015), Snatched (2017), and I Feel Pretty (2018), this thesis examines how Schumer uses different comedic techniques and how that compares to the way other women used comedy in …

Sustainable Foodways Of Scandinavia: A Closer Look At Sustainable Food And Beverage Practices In Denmark, Norway, And Sweden, Shandrea Marie Hickok
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Scandinavia leads the world with its devotion to sustainability and promotion of eco-friendly lifestyles. With concerns over climate change affecting the Nordic region, Scandinavian governments have taken an active role in creating national food strategies. So, what can Utah learn from the Nordic region? Ranking 45th in the nation for access to local food, Utah does not produce enough food to sustain itself for the future. With a background in environmental journalism, I traveled to Scandinavia during the summer of 2019 to explore Scandinavia's commitment to sustainable foods as a model for Utah. I examined modern and historical sustainable foods, …

An honors thesis.

Nearing the end of 2017, the United States and the Caribbean were struck with back-to- back natural disasters that left the country in shock and turmoil. Among the three hurricanes that struck sequentially, Hurricane Harvey landed in Texas approximately on August 25th, 2017 and Hurricane Maria hit the Caribbean and Puerto Rico around September 20th, 2017. These disasters were a test for the new presidential cabinet of how they would handle their first natural disaster. Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Harvey caused similar levels of destruction, with Maria being a category five storm …

The purpose of this analysis is to understand the successful uses of rhetorical strategies in “tech backlash” discourse, taking Tristan Harris’s TEDTalk “How a Handful of Tech Companies Control Billions of Minds Every Day” and the website Center For Humane Technology as examples. Harris is one of the few speaking out on the necessity for a “tech backlash.” The tech back lash is a term created to explain the current reaction to increased technology use and internet dependence. I will introduce research completed on the creation of the digital society over the last …
