The purpose of this study is to further understand the relationship of family background and how it affects self-esteem and the perception of gender roles in online imagery. This study focuses on how our history serves as a lens to see gender roles. The schema theory, created by Robert Axelrod, is a model suggesting that people have a “pre-existing assumption about the way the world is organized” (Axelford, 1974). Furthering this theory is Bem's (1981) Gender Schema Theory, which proposes that one's sexual self-concept affects how one structures items in memory. The rhetoric of Carrie Chapman Catt has only recently begun to be studied and theorized across several disciplinary contexts. In the field of communication and rhetorical criticism, previous studies have focused on either Catt’s domestic addresses to her followers and to the U.S. Congress, or have identified Catt’s international diplomacy as one of many motivating factors that spurred action toward suffrage by the American Congress. The focus of this essay is an attempt to analyze Catt’s shame appeals from an audience-centered perspective and begin to make plausible arguments about the instrumental effect of those strategies. The Yeguas del Apocalipsis (Mares of the Apocalypse), were an art collective consisting of two men, Pedro Lemebel and Francisco Casas, who revolutionized the way transvestism was used in performance art. Active between 1988 and 1997, the Yeguas lit the way out of the dictatorship and into the post-regime transition period. For this reason, the context in which Lemebel and Casas made their art was more conducive to their own open criticism and explicit commentary of the political and social landscape, than that of the performance artists who functioned during the authoritarian dictatorship itself. This research explored China’s sex education and the values it imparts to China’s young women. Findings indicate that although young women wish to learn about safe sex and sexuality from both schools and parents, communication is restricted by both parties embarrassment, lack of preparation, and fear that open dialogue on such topics will promote sexual activity.

The study found that while sex education classes were informative on physiological topics, in participants' perceptions, they lacked information on safe sex (i.e. use of contraceptives) by sticking to the abstinence narrative, and assuming—or pretending—that China’s young people are not engaging in sex. The National Association for Gifted Children position statement on “Identifying and Serving Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Gifted Students” suggests that educators need to change their view of CLD students from a “deficit to a strength perspective”. In addition, it states that “schools should create support programs to help gifted students from diverse backgrounds develop strong academic identities, learn coping strategies for dealing with negative peer pressure and discriminatory practices, and gain resiliency for responding to challenging life circumstances”. The focus of this workshop is the often overlooked day-to-day wearing down of people in oppressed groups as recipients of microaggressions. While most who are sympathetic to this problem know what a microaggression is, faculty, staff and students tend to fear addressing such aggressions. They simply may not know how to do so effectively. In this hands-on workshop participants will grapple with specific scenarios and be invited to try out different communicative responses and other tools to work toward creating a more inclusive climate for all. Although scholars have constructed typologies of voluntary (fictive) kin, few have considered challenges and opportunities of interaction and relationships between biolegal and voluntary kin. This study focused on one type of voluntary kin, supplemental voluntary kin, relationships that often arise because of differing values, underperformed roles, or physical distance from the biolegal family, and wherein relationships are maintained with biolegal and voluntary kin. We examined how these family systems are constructed via interactions in relational triads of “linchpin” persons between biolegal family and voluntary kin. This paper examines the role of social media in the Moroccan LGBT sphere. It draws on personal narratives from LGBT men and women as well as activists in order to establish the various ways that social media is employed in the interests of the individual, the community, and the activist. While social media has been a tool to expand the LGBT community around the world, it is specifically and unusually useful in Morocco where there is considerable censorship of incoming and outgoing media. Research shows that the credibility of instructors of color is often questioned by White students, while other studies prove that male instructors are also perceived as more credible than female instructors (Hendrix, 1997; Perry, Moore, Edwards, Acosta, & Frey, 2009). When these two findings are coupled, it seems that there might be a significant barrier to overcome for female instructors of color in their everyday instruction. Studi ini membahas strategi komunikasi antar budaya yang diterapkan sepuluh tokoh Tionghoa Indonesia dalam kultur yang diskriminatif. Sepuluh tokoh tersebut adalah AW, DNT, LAD, MA, MB, SMB, TJH, YJ, YB, dan SAP. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori Co-Cultural Mark Orbe dengan strategi Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan penerapan yang dominan pada orientasi akomodasi, yaitu upaya para informan menjalin interaksi yang harmonis dengan kelompok dominan namun pada saat bersamaan tidak ingin menghilangkan identitasnya sebagai Tionghoa Indonesia. Juga terungkap bahwa tipologi nonassertive assimilation diterapkan para informan sebagai upaya menyesuaikan diri ketika berinteraksi dengan kelompok dominan. Kohesi sangat terkait dengan konsep density dalam jaringan sosial. Mekanisme kohesi lazimnya terjadi pada jaringan yang padat/dense di mana para anggotanya memiliki kontak yang sering dan berulang/redundan. Kontak seperti ini menyebabkan perilaku dapat mudah menyebar secara contagious dan diimitasi oleh anggota jaringan secara kohesif. Objek penelitian ini adalah siswa sekolah menengah di sebuah asrama, yang terhubung dalam jaringan bullying. Para siswa ini memiliki kontak yang sering dan berulang, namun jaringan bullying mereka bukan merupakan jaringan yang padat melainkan renggang. Penelitian ini memaparkan pemikiran Pierre Bourdieu dan Theo van Leuween dalam membongkar kekerasan simbolik terhadap perempuan melalui medium fotografi di facebook. Pemaknaan foto melalui semiotika sosial Theo van Leuween merupakan hasil objektif-subjektif peneliti yang dikonfirmasi oleh informan, dilanjutkan dengan analisis mendalam dari pemikiran Pierre Boudieu tentang Habitus, doxa, modal, dan arena sebagai struktur pembentukan kekerasan simbolik. Popularitas Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM) terus naik, termasuk dalam organisasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat faktor psikologis Penggunaan MIM dalam komunikasi informal organisasi menggunakan Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA). Menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dan metode survei, data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner, kemudian dianalisis dengan Partial Least Square (PLS). Hasil penelitian dengan 89 responden dari Inspektorat Utama BPK RI, menunjukkan bahwa TRA tidak sepenuhnya terterapkan pada Penggunaan MIM dalam komunikasi organisasi. Berbeda dengan variabel sikap yang berpengaruh signifikan, variabel norma subjektif tidak berpengaruh signifikan terhadap intensi maupun perilaku.

Oleh karena itu, kaum gay membutuhkan suatu media alternatif untuk dapat berkomunikasi guna memenuhi kebutuhan pribadinya, baik dalam hal sosial maupun seksual.
