Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

In this article, the author reflects on the role of power and privilege during her interactions with international partners. She dissects how factors like social justice, intersectionality, and intercultural competence, which go beyond technical expertise, can dramatically influence the success of international projects. The goal of this paper is to provide insight for those interested in working in international development, while discussing challenges that are frequently unaddressed in the field.

Using The World Café Methodology To Support Community-Centric Research And Practice In Library And Information Science, Vanessa Kitzie, Jocelyn Pettigrew, Travis L. Wagner, Nick Vera

The World Café (TWC) methodology is a form of action research that develops collective knowledge among individuals and communities to address shared problems. TWC can complement LIS research and practice that is increasingly participatory and community centric. The potentials and pitfalls for TWC are illustrated by ongoing research examining public library service to LGBTQIA+ communities for health information. The authors used TWC in a community forum between LGBTQIA+ community leaders and librarians/paraprofessionals in [name removed for blind review]. Student publications used to be by students for students. They still are, but with upheavals in media, student journalists are starting to reach audiences well beyond campus. DePaul's student newspaper, The DePaulia, started a Spanish-language edition called La DePaulia that is distributed via social media, and its online magazine, 14 East, has a Spanish-language section called Pueblo.

Abstract

Up to 85% of nurses have reported exposure to incivility in the workplace (Hunt & Marini, 2012). The often-subtle nature of incivility toward nurses in a minority population may partially explain why it remains a problem. Healthcare organizations realize the need for civility to counter the high turnover rate, staff shortages, and low job satisfaction reported by nurses, but lack understanding of how nurses of a minority population perceive incivility and bullying. Queering Kitchens: Dismantling Violence And Reimagining Livable Spaces, Asher Warg

This paper addresses the ways in which the kitchen has historically existed as a site of violence and worked to actively exclude marginalized people. Working with Judith Butler’s definition of queer and José Muñoz’s concept of queer futurity, the concept of queering the kitchen is discussed as a method for creating accessible, equitable, and inclusive kitchens.

LGBTQ movements have attracted attention to the rights of sexual and gender minorities across many parts of the world in recent years. Japan holds a middle-of-the-road stance by neither criminalizing nor legalizing same sex sexual acts. However, various sources describe incessant discrimination faced by LGBTQ people in Japan. It is evident that sexual and gender minorities experience hardships in numerous spheres such as employment, accommodation, family life, and education. Discrimination in educational institutions has, in extreme cases, even resulted in the loss of lives. Recent legislation has increased scrutiny and vulnerability to sex worker communities. Sex work has been a highly contested issue in academia and politics, despite its long history. By centering works of thinkers from historically marginalized communities, this research will act intentionally in solidarity with sex workers most vulnerable to harm. Theorizers in Black and Indigenous Feminisms, Queer theory and Trans studies have crafted methodologies to (re)cover and (re)member histories lost to colonial structures of violence. This paper aims to tackle two components in analyzing the phenomenological concept of femicide, most simply known as the killing of women because they are women through structural violence and oppression. First, it will develop its deployment within the Latin American framework as it has been adapted to function within the regional lexicon, both socially and legislatively.
