The 2010-11 Tunisian revolution brought to the forefront of the country an explosion of activism and organizing from civil society, including multiple voices urging for the defense, protection and/or recognition of Tunisian ‘minorities.’ An unprecedented Amazigh (pl. Imazighen, the indigenous population of North Africa) wave of activism from individuals and organizations appeared in the public sphere of the country, a population systematically denied and marginalized by the Tunisian dictatorships and society emboldened to stand up for their rights and challenge the status quo. Human genetics and racial identity converge pointedly in the family narrative. Until recently, genetics, racial identity, and family narrative were all rather malleable concepts in the public arena. All were presented in anecdotal form for the most part, and were often based on certain social conventions. The interjection of popularly available ancestry DNA data adds an additional piece of information to the discussion of genetics, race and narrative. Using the framework of both narrative theory and theory of social construction, this work uses quantitative and qualitative data to explore how individuals react to ancestry DNA findings and to consider if …

Profesi jurnalis media online menuntut profesionalisme sebagaimana tertuang dalam kode etik jurnalistik 2011, UU Pers No 40 Tahun 1999 dan Pedoman Pemberitaan Media Siber 2012. Peneliti mengamati berita sebagai karya jurnalistik sekaligus sebagai bukti untuk menggambarkan kinerja profesional jurnalis dengan menerapkan teori deontologis sebagai pisau analisis penelitian. Metode dalam penelitian ini terfokus pada aspek semantik dan sintaktik terhadap 1149 berita asli dari tiga situs media online masing-masing, 362 berita Detik.com, 458 berita Kompas.com, 329 berita Republika.co.id sepanjang Juni 2014 hingga Mei 2017. East Asian television dramas from Japan, Taiwan and South Korea have become a significant part of the cultural globalization process in the Indonesian mediascapes since the 1990s. The Indonesian cultural, political and social specificities have created significant distinctions on how these television dramas reconstruct the shared imagination of (East) Asia in comparison with how it is in other locales. Studi ini membahas pemaknaan khalayak media berbasis komunitas interpretif; sebuah konsep yang menekankan pada pemaknaan media secara kolektif serta pengaruh konteks sosial budaya dalam strategi pemaknaan. Dengan menggunakan konsep tersebut, penelitian ini mengangkat topik pemaknaan fiksi gay romantis di antara pembaca perempuan lajang. Penelitian ini adalah studi kualitatif dengan paradigma konstruktionisme sosial dan menggunakan fokus grup diskusi sebagai metode pengambilan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa fiksi gay romantis menjadi alternatif bacaan akibat ketidakpuasan terhadap representasi perempuan pada media baca lain. Commercial photography has a tendency to force upon us a standard template of what the ideal person is or looks like. Unfortunately, the artificial standard is horribly unachievable and detrimental to physical and mental health, which produces sentiments of insufficiency and abjection with the self, especially among young impressionable girls. In a sick - and very modern - twist of evolutionary progress we find ourselves idealizing the depictions of models appearing to be on the verge of starvation. This article examines the power and sexuality in models produced through commercial photography and its effects on society at-large.

Purpose: Patient refusal for lung cancer surgery is significant, but other factors, such as negative framing of the treatment discussion, may be involved. Physician attitudes could influence the nuances of and therefore the conclusions of these discussions. We determined physicians’ attitudes and the influence it has on possible decisions against lung cancer surgery, particularly surgical rates for blacks, using a companion survey.

This essay examines how the ideograph was crafted through dialectical struggles between Euro-Americans and American Indians over federal Indian policy between 1964 and 1968. For policymakers, was historically sutured to the belief that assimilation was the only pathway to American Indian liberation. I explore the American Indian youth movement’s response to President Johnson’s War on Poverty to demonstrate how activists rhetorically realigned in Indian policy with the Great Society’s rhetoric of “community empowerment.” I illustrate how American Indians orchestrated counterhegemonic resistance by reframing the “Great Society” as an argument for a “Greater Indian American.” This analysis evinces the rhetorical significance …

Since Garfinkle’s ground-breaking work on labeling in the 1950’s, the link between identity formation, specifically as constructed by external social messages intentionally directed by authority, and resultant behaviors has been well established. This research has extended upon this assumption, applying critical media and rhetorical methods to advertising aimed at adolescents, a particularly vulnerable group at a point of transition and identity formation. This study examined the differences between communication apprehension, one’s gender, and his or her year in college. Participants included a convenience sample of full-time undergraduate students at a Midwestern, liberal arts, private Christian college. The students were asked to complete the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA-24), a self-report measure of communication apprehension. It was predicted that females would have higher communication apprehension levels than males and that as class standing increases, communication apprehension decreases. A statistically significant difference was found between males and females with respect to their overall CA score. The results also showed no significant difference between …

Secondary migration to southern Minnesota has increased the refugee population as well as the need for research assessing the needs and concerns of refugees.
