Composite Nonparametric Tests In High Dimension, Alejandro G. Villasante Tezanos 2019 University of Kentucky

Composite Nonparametric Tests In High Dimension, Alejandro G. Villasante Tezanos

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

This dissertation focuses on the problem of making high-dimensional inference for two or more groups. High-dimensional means both the sample size (n) and dimension (p) tend to infinity, possibly at different rates. Classical approaches for group comparisons fail in the high-dimensional situation, in the sense that they have incorrect sizes and low powers. Much has been done in recent years to overcome these problems. However, these recent works make restrictive assumptions in terms of the number of treatments to be compared and/or the distribution of the data. This research aims to (1) propose and investigate refined …

Quantifying Human Biological Age: A Machine Learning Approach, Syed Ashiqur Rahman 2019 West Virginia University

Quantifying Human Biological Age: A Machine Learning Approach, Syed Ashiqur Rahman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Quantifying human biological age is an important and difficult challenge. Different biomarkers and numerous approaches have been studied for biological age prediction, each with its advantages and limitations. In this work, we first introduce a new anthropometric measure (called Surface-based Body Shape Index, SBSI) that accounts for both body shape and body size, and evaluate its performance as a predictor of all-cause mortality. We analyzed data from the National Health and Human Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Based on the analysis, we introduce a new body shape index constructed from four important anthropometric determinants of body shape and body size: body …

Statistical Modeling Of Influenza-Like-Illness In Montana Using Spatial And Temporal Methods, Benjamin A. Stark 2019 University of Montana, Missoula

Statistical Modeling Of Influenza-Like-Illness In Montana Using Spatial And Temporal Methods, Benjamin A. Stark

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Studying air pollution and public health has been a historically important question in science. It has long been hypothesized that severe air pollution conditions lead to negative implications in basic human health. Primarily, areas thats are prone to severe degrees of human pollution are the focus of such studies. Such research relating to less populated areas are scarce, and this scarcity raises the question of how such pollution dynamics (human-made and natural) influence human health in more rural areas.

The aim of this study is to explore this hole in research; in particular we explore possible links between air pollution …

Bayesian Analysis For The Intraclass Model And For The Quantile Semiparametric Mixed-Effects Double Regression Models, Duo Zhang 2019 Michigan Technological University

Bayesian Analysis For The Intraclass Model And For The Quantile Semiparametric Mixed-Effects Double Regression Models, Duo Zhang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation consists of three distinct but related research projects. The first two projects focus on objective Bayesian hypothesis testing and estimation for the intraclass correlation coefficient in linear models. The third project deals with Bayesian quantile inference for the semiparametric mixed-effects double regression models. In the first project, we derive the Bayes factors based on the divergence-based priors for testing the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The hypothesis testing of the ICC is used to test the uncorrelatedness in multilevel modeling, and it has not well been studied from an objective Bayesian perspective. Simulation results show that the two sorts …

Hydroclimate Drivers And Atmospheric Dynamics Of Floods, Nasser Najibi 2019 CUNY City College

Hydroclimate Drivers And Atmospheric Dynamics Of Floods, Nasser Najibi

Dissertations and Theses

Our preliminary survey showed that most of the recent flood-related studies did not formally explain the physical mechanisms of long-duration and large-peak flood events that can evoke substantial damages to properties and infrastructure systems. These studies also fell short of fully assessing the interactions of coupled ocean-atmosphere and land dynamics which are capable of forcing substantial changes to the flood attributes by governing the exceeding surface flow regimes and moisture source-sink relationships at the spatiotemporal scales important for risk management. This dissertation advances the understanding of the variability in flood duration, peak, volume, and timing at the regional to the …

A Comparison Of Bayesian Estimation Techniques In A Multidimensional Two-Parameter Partial Credit Item Response Model, Peiyan Liu 2019 University of Denver

A Comparison Of Bayesian Estimation Techniques In A Multidimensional Two-Parameter Partial Credit Item Response Model, Peiyan Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bayesian estimation methods have shown better performance than the traditional Marginal Maximum Likelihood (MML) estimation method for parameter estimation in relatively simple item response models. However, extant literature is lacking on the investigation of Bayesian parameter estimation approaches for a multidimensional two parameter partial credit (M2PPC) model, therefore this simulation study investigated the performance of two Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms: Gibbs Sampler and Hamiltonian Monte Carlo-No-U-Turn-Sampler (HMC-NUTS) for M2PPC models' parameter estimation. It compared the estimation accuracy and computing speed in different combinations of situations, including prior choices, test lengths, and the relationships between dimensions.

The datasets …

Latent Growth Model Approach To Characterize Maternal Prenatal Dna Methylation Trajectories, Dana Lapato 2019 Virginia Commonwealth University

Latent Growth Model Approach To Characterize Maternal Prenatal Dna Methylation Trajectories, Dana Lapato

Theses and Dissertations

Background. DNA methylation (DNAm) is a removable chemical modification to the DNA sequence intimately associated with genomic stability, cellular identity, and gene expression. DNAm patterning reflects joint contributions from genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors. As such, differences in DNAm patterns may explain interindividual variability in risk liability for complex traits like major depression (MD). Hundreds of significant DNAm loci have been identified using cross-sectional association studies. This dissertation builds on that foundational work to explore novel statistical approaches for longitudinal DNAm analyses. Methods. Repeated measures of genome-wide DNAm and social and environmental determinants of health were collected up to six …

Statistical Designs For Network A/B Testing, Victoria V. Pokhilko 2019 Virginia Commonwealth University

Statistical Designs For Network A/B Testing, Victoria V. Pokhilko

Theses and Dissertations

A/B testing refers to the statistical procedure of experimental design and analysis to compare two treatments, A and B, applied to different testing subjects. It is widely used by technology companies such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Netflix, to compare different algorithms, web-designs, and other online products and services. The subjects participating in these online A/B testing experiments are users who are connected in different scales of social networks. Two connected subjects are similar in terms of their social behaviors, education and financial background, and other demographic aspects. Hence, it is only natural to assume that their reactions to online products …

A Multilayer Exponential Random Graph Modelling Approach For Weighted Networks, Alberto Caimo, Isabella Gollini 2019 Technological University Dublin

A Multilayer Exponential Random Graph Modelling Approach For Weighted Networks, Alberto Caimo, Isabella Gollini

Articles

A new modelling approach for the analysis of weighted networks with ordinal/polytomous dyadic values is introduced. Specifically, it is proposed to model the weighted network connectivity structure using a hierarchical multilayer exponential random graph model (ERGM) generative process where each network layer represents a different ordinal dyadic category. The network layers are assumed to be generated by an ERGM process conditional on their closest lower network layers. A crucial advantage of the proposed method is the possibility of adopting the binary network statistics specification to describe both the between-layer and across-layer network processes and thus facilitating the interpretation of the …

Some New Generalized Distribution Via Lindley-Weibuli And Lindley-Log-Logistic Distributions With Applications, Soliu A. Raheem 2019 Georgia Southern University

Some New Generalized Distribution Via Lindley-Weibuli And Lindley-Log-Logistic Distributions With Applications, Soliu A. Raheem

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, new generalized distributions, namely Beta Lindley-Log-Logistic (BLLLoG) distribution, Marshall-Olkin Lindley-Weibull (MOLW) distribution, and Gamma LindleyWeibull (GLW) distribution as well as related sub-distributions are proposed. Series expansion of the densities are obtained. Statistical properties of these distributions, including hazard function, reverse hazard function, moments, reliability, quantile function, mean deviations, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves, entropy and Fisher information are derived. Method of maximum likelihood is used to estimate the parameters of the new distributions. Monte Carlo simulation is employed to examine the performance of the proposed distributions. Applications of the generalized distributions to real lifetime data are presented to …

Variable Selection In Accelerated Failure Time (Aft) Frailty Models: An Application Of Penalized Quasi-Likelihood, Sarbesh R. Pandeya 2019 Georgia Southern University

Variable Selection In Accelerated Failure Time (Aft) Frailty Models: An Application Of Penalized Quasi-Likelihood, Sarbesh R. Pandeya

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Variable selection is one of the standard ways of selecting models in large scale datasets. It has applications in many fields of research study, especially in large multi-center clinical trials. One of the prominent methods in variable selection is the penalized likelihood, which is both consistent and efficient. However, the penalized selection is significantly challenging under the influence of random (frailty) covariates. It is even more complicated when there is involvement of censoring as it may not have a closed-form solution for the marginal log-likelihood. Therefore, we applied the penalized quasi-likelihood (PQL) approach that approximates the solution for such a …

Design Of Experiment And Analysis Techniques For Fuel Consumption Data Using Heavy-Duty Diesel Vehicles And On-Road Testing, Sarah Ann Mills 2019 West Virginia University

Design Of Experiment And Analysis Techniques For Fuel Consumption Data Using Heavy-Duty Diesel Vehicles And On-Road Testing, Sarah Ann Mills

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Chassis dynamometer and on-road testing are usually employed to test vehicle operation. Testing on a chassis dynamometer reduces data variability compared to on-road testing due to the controlled environment but it does not account for other important variables that affects real-world vehicle operation. This study used on-road testing to investigate the differences between two test fuels under real-world conditions. Three heavy-duty diesel vehicles were driven on different routes for a period of three months. Each vehicle was instrumented with flow meters to gather fuel consumption data, which was then compared to the fuel rate broadcasted by the engine control unit …

Analysis Of Covariance (Ancova) In Randomized Trials: More Precision, Less Conditional Bias, And Valid Confidence Intervals, Without Model Assumptions, Bingkai Wang, Elizabeth Ogburn, Michael Rosenblum 2018 Department of Biostatistics, Johns Hopkins University

Analysis Of Covariance (Ancova) In Randomized Trials: More Precision, Less Conditional Bias, And Valid Confidence Intervals, Without Model Assumptions, Bingkai Wang, Elizabeth Ogburn, Michael Rosenblum

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Covariate adjustment" in the randomized trial context refers to an estimator of the average treatment effect that adjusts for chance imbalances between study arms in baseline variables (called “covariates"). The baseline variables could include, e.g., age, sex, disease severity, and biomarkers. According to two surveys of clinical trial reports, there is confusion about the statistical properties of covariate adjustment. We focus on the ANCOVA estimator, which involves fitting a linear model for the outcome given the treatment arm and baseline variables, and trials with equal probability of assignment to treatment and control. We prove the following new (to the best …

Publications and Research

Water risk management is a ubiquitous challenge faced by stakeholders in the water or agricultural sector. We present a methodological framework for forecasting water storage requirements and present an application of this methodology to risk assessment in India. The application focused on forecasting crop water stress for potatoes grown during the monsoon season in the Satara district of Maharashtra. Pre-season large-scale climate predictors used to forecast water stress were selected based on an exhaustive search method that evaluates for highest ranked probability skill score and lowest root-mean-squared error in a leave-one-out cross-validation mode. Adaptive forecasts were made in the years …

Minimizing The Perceived Financial Burden Due To Cancer, Hassan Azhar, Zoheb Allam, Gino Varghese, Daniel W. Engels, Sajiny John 2018 Southern Methodist University

Minimizing The Perceived Financial Burden Due To Cancer, Hassan Azhar, Zoheb Allam, Gino Varghese, Daniel W. Engels, Sajiny John

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we present a regression model that predicts perceived financial burden that a cancer patient experiences in the treatment and management of the disease. Cancer patients do not fully understand the burden associated with the cost of cancer, and their lack of understanding can increase the difficulties associated with living with the disease, in particular coping with the cost. The relationship between demographic characteristics and financial burden were examined in order to better understand the characteristics of a cancer patient and their burden, while all subsets regression was used to determine the best predictors of financial burden. Age, …

Yelp’S Review Filtering Algorithm, Yao Yao, Ivelin Angelov, Jack Rasmus-Vorrath, Mooyoung Lee, Daniel W. Engels 2018 Southern Methodist University

Yelp’S Review Filtering Algorithm, Yao Yao, Ivelin Angelov, Jack Rasmus-Vorrath, Mooyoung Lee, Daniel W. Engels

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we present an analysis of features influencing Yelp's proprietary review filtering algorithm. Classifying or misclassifying reviews as recommended or non-recommended affects average ratings, consumer decisions, and ultimately, business revenue. Our analysis involves systematically sampling and scraping Yelp restaurant reviews. Features are extracted from review metadata and engineered from metrics and scores generated using text classifiers and sentiment analysis. The coefficients of a multivariate logistic regression model were interpreted as quantifications of the relative importance of features in classifying reviews as recommended or non-recommended. The model classified review recommendations with an accuracy of 78%. We found that reviews …

Robust Inference For The Stepped Wedge Design, James P. Hughes, Patrick J. Heagerty, Fan Xia, Yuqi Ren 2018 University of Washington - Seattle Campus

Robust Inference For The Stepped Wedge Design, James P. Hughes, Patrick J. Heagerty, Fan Xia, Yuqi Ren

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Based on a permutation argument, we derive a closed form expression for an estimate of the treatment effect, along with its standard error, in a stepped wedge design. We show that these estimates are robust to misspecification of both the mean and covariance structure of the underlying data-generating mechanism, thereby providing a robust approach to inference for the treatment effect in stepped wedge designs. We use simulations to evaluate the type I error and power of the proposed estimate and to compare the performance of the proposed estimate to the optimal estimate when the correct model specification is known. The …
