Design And Experimental Study On Special Spherical Support Of Pingtang Bridge, Tang Zhi, Ma Baihu, Du Bin, Xu Xiangdong, Xia Junyong

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

The vertical bearing capacity of the 16# pier of Pingtang Bridge is 10 000 kN, and the horizontal bearing capacity along the bridge is 12 000 kN, which is 120% of the vertical bearing capacity. The support angle needs to reach the technical parameter requirements of 0.05 rad, which far exceeds the requirements of 10–40% horizontal force of conventional highway supports. According to the specific engineering situation, a new type of support with a large horizontal bearing capacity was designed. Firstly, the finite element model of the support was established to analyze the mechanical properties of the support, and the …

Study On Pavement Performance Of Waterborne Epoxy Emulsified Asphalt And Its Application In Micro‐Surface, Jiang Hai, Liu Dachang

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

In order to improve the pavement performance at micro-surface, waterborne epoxy resin was used to modify the emulsified asphalt, and the compatibility, microstructure, mechanical properties, rheological properties, and pavement performance of mixtures of the modified emulsified asphalt were studied. The storage stability test shows that the epoxy emulsion has good compatibility with emulsified asphalt. With the increase in waterborne epoxy resin content, the modified emulsified asphalt tends to form an epoxy resin-dominated skeleton structure. At the same time, with the increase in waterborne epoxy resin content, the adhesion and mechanical properties of emulsified asphalt and aggregate are significantly improved. At …

Finite Mixture Modeling For Hierarchically Structured Data With Application To Keystroke Dynamics, Andrew Simpson, Semhar Michael 2023 South Dakota State University

Finite Mixture Modeling For Hierarchically Structured Data With Application To Keystroke Dynamics, Andrew Simpson, Semhar Michael

SDSU Data Science Symposium

Keystroke dynamics has been used to both authenticate users of computer systems and detect unauthorized users who attempt to access the system. Monitoring keystroke dynamics adds another level to computer security as passwords are often compromised. Keystrokes can also be continuously monitored long after a password has been entered and the user is accessing the system for added security. Many of the current methods that have been proposed are supervised methods in that they assume that the true user of each keystroke is known apriori. This is not always true for example with businesses and government agencies which have internal …

Modeling And Fitting Two-Way Tables Containing Outliers, David L. Farnsworth 2023 Rochester Institute of Technology

Modeling And Fitting Two-Way Tables Containing Outliers, David L. Farnsworth

Articles

A model is proposed for two-way tables of measurement data containing outliers. The two independent variables are categorical and error free. Neither missing values nor replication are present. The model consists of the sum of a customary additive part that can be fit using least squares and a part that is composed of outliers. Recommendations are made for methods for identifying cells containing outliers and for fitting the model. A graph of the observations is used to determine the outliers’ locations. For all cells containing an outlier, replacement values are determined simultaneously using a classical missing-data tool. The result is …

Unlocking Potential: The School-To-Prison Pipeline For Students With Disabilities, Navena F. Chaitoo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This research uses quasi-experimental, matched sampling to examine the school-to-prison pipeline for students with disabilities using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. This study presents novel insights into an at-risk group that has faced disproportionate rates of school discipline and incarceration. The study finds school suspension to be associated with future involvement in the criminal legal system and lower educational attainment. Disability was not found to mediate the relationship between suspension and future involvement in the criminal legal system or the relationship between suspension and academic outcomes. However, disability was found to be a statistically …

Biasing Estimator To Mitigate Multicollinearity In Linear Regression Model, Abdulrasheed Bello Badawaire, Issam Dawoud, Adewale Folaranmi Lukman, Victoria Laoye, Arowolo Olatunji

Al-Bahir

A new two-parameter estimator was developed to combat the threat of multicollinearity for the linear regression model. Some necessary and sufficient conditions for the dominance of the proposed estimator over ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator, ridge regression estimator, Liu estimator, KL estimator, and some two-parameter estimators are obtained in the matrix mean square error sense. Theory and simulation results show that, under some conditions, the proposed two-parameter estimator consistently dominates other estimators considered in this study. The real-life application result follows suit.

A Bootstrap Test For Informative Intra-Cluster Group Sizes In Clustered Data, Hasika K. Wickrama Senevirathne, Sandipan Dutta 2023 Old Dominion University

A Bootstrap Test For Informative Intra-Cluster Group Sizes In Clustered Data, Hasika K. Wickrama Senevirathne, Sandipan Dutta

College of Sciences Posters

Clustered data are frequently observed in various domains of scientific and social studies. In a typical clustered data, units within a cluster are correlated while units between different clusters are independent. An example of such clustered data can be found in dental studies where individuals are treated as clusters and the teeth in an individual are the units within a cluster. While analyzing such clustered data, it has been observed that the number of units present in a cluster can be informative in terms of being associated with the outcome from that cluster. Specifically, when the aim is to compare …

Statistical Tolerance Regions For Flexible Modeling Paradigms, Yafan Guo 2023 University of Kentucky

Statistical Tolerance Regions For Flexible Modeling Paradigms, Yafan Guo

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Tolerance intervals in a regression setting allow the user to quantify, with a specified degree of confidence, bounds for a specified proportion of the sampled population when conditioned on a set of covariate values. While methods are available for tolerance intervals in fully-parametric regression settings, the construction of tolerance intervals for semiparametric regression models has been treated in a limited capacity. The first project fills this gap and develops likelihood-based approaches for the construction of pointwise one-sided and two-sided tolerance intervals for semiparametric regression models. A numerical approach is also presented for constructing simultaneous tolerance intervals. An appealing facet of …

Classification Of Adult Income Using Decision Tree, Roland Fiagbe 2023 University of Central Florida

Classification Of Adult Income Using Decision Tree, Roland Fiagbe

Data Science and Data Mining

Decision tree is a commonly used data mining methodology for performing classification tasks. It is a tree-based supervised machine learning algorithm that is used to classify or make predictions in a path of how previous questions are answered. Generally, the decision tree algorithm categorizes data into branch-like segments that develop into a tree that contains a root, nodes, and leaves. This project seeks to explore the decision tree methodology and apply it to the Adult Income dataset from the UCI Machine Learning Repository, to determine whether a person makes over 50K per year and determine the necessary factors that improve …

Tolerance Intervals For Various Regression Models, Xitong Zhou 2023 University of Kentucky

Tolerance Intervals For Various Regression Models, Xitong Zhou

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Among statistical intervals, confidence intervals and prediction intervals are well-known and commonly used. In many applications, the problem becomes finding an interval that covers at least a certain proportion $P$ of the population for a characteristic of interest with a specified confidence level $(1-\alpha)$. And such interval is named a $P$-content, $(1-\alpha)$-confidence Tolerance Interval (TI). The topic of the dissertation is the utility of tolerance intervals for various regression models. We begin with a discussion of tolerance intervals for linear and nonlinear regression models. We then propose a bootstrap method of constructing TIs for Tobit regression to deal with censored …

High Dimensional Data Analysis: Variable Screening And Inference, lei fang 2023 University of Kentucky

High Dimensional Data Analysis: Variable Screening And Inference, Lei Fang

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

This dissertation focuses on the problem of high dimensional data analysis, which arises in many fields including genomics, finance, and social sciences. In such settings, the number of features or variables is much larger than the number of observations, posing significant challenges to traditional statistical methods.

To address these challenges, this dissertation proposes novel methods for variable screening and inference. The first part of the dissertation focuses on variable screening, which aims to identify a subset of important variables that are strongly associated with the response variable. Specifically, we propose a robust nonparametric screening method to effectively select the predictors …

Novel Modelling And Inference Considerations Involving The Exponentially-Modified Gaussian Distribution, Yanxi Li 2023 University of Kentucky

Novel Modelling And Inference Considerations Involving The Exponentially-Modified Gaussian Distribution, Yanxi Li

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

The exponentially-modified Gaussian (EMG) distribution is well-suited for analyzing data with positive skewness due to its characteristic positive skew from the exponential component. Despite its popularity in various fields, the EMG distribution has only been analyzed for univariate data without any regression settings. To address this limitation, we developed a generalized EMG regression model with covariates by assigning parametric functional forms to some or all of the parameters in the EMG distribution that vary with values of the covariates. To further perform data-clustering on observation points, we propose a competing regression model where the error structure is assumed to be …

Finite Mixtures Of Mean-Parameterized Conway-Maxwell-Poisson Models, Dongying Zhan 2023 University of Kentucky

Finite Mixtures Of Mean-Parameterized Conway-Maxwell-Poisson Models, Dongying Zhan

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

For modeling count data, the Conway-Maxwell-Poisson (CMP) distribution is a popular generalization of the Poisson distribution due to its ability to characterize data over- or under-dispersion. While the classic parameterization of the CMP has been well-studied, its main drawback is that it is does not directly model the mean of the counts. This is mitigated by using a mean-parameterized version of the CMP distribution. In this work, we are concerned with the setting where count data may be comprised of subpopulations, each possibly having varying degrees of data dispersion. Thus, we propose a finite mixture of mean-parameterized CMP distributions. An …

Methodologies And Computational Tools For Zero-Inflated Discrete Weibull Models, Peng Yeh 2023 University of Kentucky

Methodologies And Computational Tools For Zero-Inflated Discrete Weibull Models, Peng Yeh

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Count data with excess zeros is common in many fields, such as ecology, healthcare, and insurance. Excess zeros data are often causing the inaccurate fit from the count models. While zero-inflated models have been developing for over two decades, one should also consider a more flexible model that can handle the excess zeros and further over- or under-dispersion. In this talk, we discuss zero-inflated discrete Weibull model and some novel computational contributions. The flexibility and competitiveness of the ZIDW model are illustrated by simulation studies and a real data analysis. We also investigate the performance of the proposed model through …

Statistical Methods For Gene Selection And Genetic Association Studies, Xuewei Cao 2023 Michigan Technological University

Statistical Methods For Gene Selection And Genetic Association Studies, Xuewei Cao

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation includes five Chapters. A brief description of each chapter is organized as follows.

In Chapter One, we propose a signed bipartite genotype and phenotype network (GPN) by linking phenotypes and genotypes based on the statistical associations. It provides a new insight to investigate the genetic architecture among multiple correlated phenotypes and explore where phenotypes might be related at a higher level of cellular and organismal organization. We show that multiple phenotypes association studies by considering the proposed network are improved by incorporating the genetic information into the phenotype clustering.

In Chapter Two, we first illustrate the proposed GPN …

Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney Effects For Clustered Data: Informative Cluster Size, Changrui Liu 2023 University of Kentucky

Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney Effects For Clustered Data: Informative Cluster Size, Changrui Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

In recent research, there has been a growing interest in understanding the impact of informative cluster size (ICS) on statistical inference for clustered data. In the non-parametric context, the problem for testing equality of distribution functions has been the main consideration. We are aiming to develop inferential procedures for the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney effect, also known as the non-parametric relative effect, involving two or more groups. Computationally, results from both simulated and real-world data have shown promising results that our proposed tests effectively account for ICS and they particularly outperform other methods in the literature designed for ignorable cluster sizes. The applications …

Joint Probability Analysis Of Extreme Precipitation And Water Level For Chicago, Illinois, Anna Li Holey 2023 Michigan Technological University

Joint Probability Analysis Of Extreme Precipitation And Water Level For Chicago, Illinois, Anna Li Holey

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

A compound flooding event occurs when there is a combination of two or more extreme factors that happen simultaneously or in quick succession and can lead to flooding. In the Great Lakes region, it is common for a compound flooding event to occur with a high lake water level and heavy rainfall. With the potential of increasing water levels and an increase in precipitation under climate change, the Great Lakes coastal regions could be at risk for more frequent and severe flooding. The City of Chicago which is located on Lake Michigan has a high population and dense infrastructure and …

Bayesian Structural Time Series Methods For Modeling Cattle Body Temperature In Heat-Stressed Animals, Lacey Quandt 2023 Murray State University

Bayesian Structural Time Series Methods For Modeling Cattle Body Temperature In Heat-Stressed Animals, Lacey Quandt

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Climate change has had devastating effects globally, most commonly talked about during natural disasters and rising temperatures. Notably, the climate concern is turning towards agriculture and livestock. With rising temperatures, the prolonged amount of heat stress put on animals, specifically cattle, is becoming more apparent. Heat stress has been linked to a reduction in cattle growing and fattening, feed intake, productivity, reproduction, and fertility; increased heart rates and respiration; changes in behavior; and mortality in severe cases. There are abatement strategies put in place to lower heat stress in cattle, such as improvements in shading and cooling, nutritional management, and …
